Installing a contactless ignition system on a classic. Installing a contactless ignition system on a classic How to connect a contactless ignition system

Experienced car owners of the popular VAZ 2106 model repeatedly encounter problems contact system classic engine ignition:

  • burning of contacts, violation of the contact zone;
  • change in the gap size of the breaker, respectively, ignition angle, spark quality, speed idle speed;
  • a decrease in the elasticity coefficient of the breaker spring over time, natural wear, requiring replacement of the element;
  • high mechanical load on the distributor support bearings, cam wear, leading to repairs and periodic replacement of units.

Repair, maintenance, installation and dismantling of the distributor require skills not only mechanical work, but also knowledge in the field of auto electrics and engine diagnostics. Therefore, many car enthusiasts turn to specialized service stations to solve problems related to servicing the contact ignition system. Instead of making discounts for respected owners of older cars, some auto repair shops, on the contrary, increase prices.

The surest way to reduce problems associated with servicing the ignition system of the VAZ 2106 is to install the system demon contact ignition per car. Photo: media2.24aul.ru

Advantages and disadvantages of a contactless ignition system

From models 2108 onwards domestic VAZs A contactless ignition system is installed. The undeniable advantages of a contactless ignition system:

  • ease of maintenance and repair;
  • increasing the frequency of routine maintenance;
  • reducing the level of electromagnetic interference associated with sparking contacts;
  • increasing the service life of the ignition coil, spark plugs, distributor;
  • more uniform engine operation, stabilization of the ignition angle during operation;
  • fuel economy due to optimal ignition angle setting;
  • the increased peak voltage of high-voltage pulses (24 kilovolts instead of 16, as on the contact system) contributes to the formation of a better spark;
  • easy starting of the car, especially in the cold season.

The contactless ignition system has its disadvantages:

  1. The switch, like all electronic components, has a certain service life. It is not a fact that the device will fail after the stated uptime (usually three years). Most switches work well for five years or more. But there are cases when the switch burns out within a month after installation. This often happens with eastern counterparts.
  2. The electronic unit of the switch is non-separable, it cannot be repaired, only aggregate replacement is required. Therefore, when planning a long trip, especially to sparsely populated areas, it is a good idea to take a spare switch and ignition coil on the road.
  3. Electronic devices are more sensitive to voltage drops (if the generator is not operating correctly) and electromagnetic influences. Non-contact ignition is rarely used on military equipment. In the event of a nuclear explosion, the electromagnetic pulse disables all working electronics.
  4. Purchasing and installing a contactless ignition system requires certain costs.

The cost of the kit for a VAZ 2106 is about 2,500 rubles. It costs approximately this amount to install the system at a service station. It is also necessary to change the spark plugs. Photo: images.ua.prom.st

Operating principle of a contactless ignition system

In the contact system, to synchronize the ignition angle, a cam mechanism is used, which drives the contact, which, opening and closing, generates electrical impulses in primary winding ignition coils. On the secondary winding of the coil are generated high voltage pulses, coming through the distributor to high voltage wires corresponding candles.
The non-contact system replaces all elements associated with contact.

The cam mechanism is replaced with a plate made of soft magnetic material with indicator protrusions. The breaker contact replaces the Hall sensor. It generates an electrical impulse at the moment the indicator protrusions pass through its sensitivity zone. The pulse amplitude of the Hall sensor is not enough to directly control the ignition coil.

Therefore, to amplify the pulses it is used electronic switch, otherwise switching amplifier. At its exit stands power transistor, which controls the operation of the electronic ignition coil.

You need to know that the ignition coil for a contactless system differs in electrical parameters from the contact one. Therefore, the BSZ kit usually includes an electronic coil. Also, when replacing the ignition system with a contactless one, the spark plugs should be replaced.

Complete set of contactless ignition system

The standard package of the contactless ignition system for the VAZ 2106 includes the following components:

distributor with built-in Hall sensor, vacuum ignition timing regulator and noise suppression capacitor;

  • switch;
  • ignition coil;
  • set of wires;
  • set of candles;
  • installation and operating instructions.

Some kits include a set of fasteners. Photo: images.ua.prom.st

Self-installation and configuration of a contactless ignition system

You can almost halve the costs associated with replacing a car's ignition system. self installation and setting. To install the device correctly you need:

  • electrical installation skills;
  • basic knowledge of electrical engineering, reading electrical diagrams;
  • knowledge of the sequence of setting the ignition angle of internal combustion engines;
  • availability of tools (drill, set of screwdrivers, pliers, electrical tape, multimeter, set of wrenches - 8, 10 and 13).

You will find another instruction for installing contactless ignition in this video:

Adjustment work

  1. In case of knocking of the “fingers”, the distributor is moved clockwise, while there is a loss of power – counter-clockwise.
  2. Regulation idle speed produced with screws of quality and quantity according to a standard algorithm.
  3. At the end of the adjustments, a check run is carried out; in case of violation of the modes, the adjustment is made again.

Recommendations for operating a contactless ignition system

In order for the contactless ignition system to work without failures, you must:

  • monitor the condition of the installed electrical wiring and connectors;
  • periodically clean high-voltage wires, ignition coil and switch from oily accumulations, dust and dirt;
  • Periodically check the voltage on the battery in charging mode with the engine running (should be no more than 14.5 Volts).

Although progress has stepped far forward, there are still many adherents of the classic VAZ models. Such cars include the old kopeck, which has long been discontinued, and the more modern, but also no longer produced, models 2104 -. In this article we will talk about how contact ignition changes to contactless (electronic) and whether there is really any benefit from such a replacement.

Why is replacement needed?

On the Internet in various automotive forums, owners conduct multi-page debates about the benefits contactless ignition. And these advantages are really enough. After installing contactless ignition, operation becomes smooth and soft. There are no dips when the car accelerates sharply. Starting is significantly easier, especially in cold weather. And of course, noticeable fuel savings.

The device and principle of operation of contactless ignition.

Essentially, the device contactless ignition not much different from the system contact ignition. The only differences are the absence of a distributor and the presence of a pulse sensor with a transistor switch unit.

Installation of a contactless ignition system on a VAZ

First you need to purchase a kit contactless ignition For . We strongly recommend purchasing contactless ignition from trusted retail outlets. It is worth paying attention that the kit must correspond to the characteristics of the engine of your car, and the length of the distributor shaft should not differ from the length of the shaft that is installed in at the moment on the unit.

The contactless ignition kit should include:

  1. distributor
  2. coil
  3. switching unit
  4. connecting wires
  5. set of high voltage wires
  6. four spark plugs marked DVRM

To replace contactless ignition system passed successfully, you need to follow the correct sequence of work. First you need to remove the negative one. Then we disconnect the wires from the ignition coil and the central high-voltage wire, and then remove the distributor cover. Now we set the slider to the position as shown in the figure so as not to change the ignition settings. You also need to make a mark on the block in order to correctly align the new contactless ignition distributor. Please note that we place the mark in the middle of the five slots on the bottom of the distributor body. Now you can unscrew the nut and remove the old distributor contact ignition system.

Before installing contactless ignition, open the cover of the new distributor and place the slider in the same position as on the old one, perpendicular to the engine. And only then we insert it into the holes of the cylinder block. Then we align the mark that we made previously and tighten the body with a nut.

Then we assemble: put on the cover, connect the high-voltage wires.

Then we disconnect and remove the old ignition coil and put a new one in its place. We connect the other end of the central high-voltage wire to it, but now we won’t need the brown wire that went from the coil to the distributor and can safely put it aside.

We connect all the high-voltage wires in their places. We connect two brown wires to the new ignition coil to contact “K”, and two blue ones to contact “B”.

Now we decide on a place for the switch (possibly in the area of the washer reservoir) and secure it using self-tapping screws. We connect the connector and twist all the wires with electrical tape.

After the completed operations, start the engine and, if necessary, adjust the operation of the contactless ignition.

Greetings! I finally rested after the holidays and decided to write a short article today. It happened on December 31st. It was such that we stopped for a short smoke break, and, of course, turned off the engine. This is where the problem lay, since we could not start the engine. After fiddling with the car a little, they diagnosed the cause as the ignition contacts, which had simply burned out.

Installation of contactless ignition on VAZ 2101 - 2107

As we looked into the situation in more detail, the specifics became more and more clear. Not only the contacts died the death of the brave, but also the capacitor. Here the old TV and its capacitor helped us, but we spat on the contacts and went in search of contactless ignition. Our city is quite provincial, and therefore it was simply unrealistic to purchase a ready-made set of the ignition we needed, which led to the purchase of the following components:

  • Sensor – distributor (distributor);
  • Switch for 6 contacts from eight or nine;
  • Ignition coil from figure eight.
  • I advise you to immediately buy ready-made wiring, but we were unlucky - alas, it wasn’t available in our store... I won’t write about prices, since they are different everywhere.

I’ll say right away that I won’t fully describe the process of installing contactless ignition on 3 and 6, there are a huge number of similar instructions on the Internet (when I have time, then I’ll write my own). So, the first problem awaited me, it was that the distributor was for a block from a penny. Although the inscription on the packaging said otherwise:

I wasn’t too upset, they just replaced it with a donor distributor shaft. Everything worked out. I would like to point out that this was an old R-125 distributor that did not have a vacuum ignition advancer (instead of which it had a manual octane corrector). Under the hood the elements looked like this:

I almost forgot. Regarding the connectors of the distributor and switch. After a short search, we found the required connector in the wiring Volkswagen Jetta, after which they sawed off a piece of the distributor of the required size:

And of course for the switch:

After everything was connected according to the diagram, we finally saw a spark and the engine started. The only thing left to do was to set the ignition correctly.

Along the way, another problem awaited us - the tachometer did not want to show the engine speed if it was less than 2000 rpm. To solve the problem with a break in the signal wire in the tachometer, a capacitor was included there (someone installs a capacitor from a standard contact ignition system, in my case the capacitor had a capacity of 0.25 uF 400V).

Did I feel any advantage? For starters, the engine started more confidently, and it ran more smoothly and steadily, plus the dynamics at high speeds increased significantly. The run-in is currently underway...

Now almost all classic owners install contactless electronic ignition (BSI) on their cars. And it's easy to explain. BSZ has obvious and proven advantages, such as simplicity and ease of setup. If you are already quite tired of the fact that the contact pair, for certain reasons, very often does not work or even fails. You have not yet decided whether to buy a contactless ignition kit, then this article will help you make the right choice.

Now, let's move on to the most important thing - selection and installation BSZ to your car.

I think that it is best to opt for a contactless ignition kit made in Russia, namely the city of Stary Oskol.

The box contains the coil, switch, wiring harness and distributor.

This kit is recognized as one of the best. It’s true that the price is sky-high, and before purchasing you need to look at what engine block you have, since the distributors differ in the length of the shaft.

For installation we will need a drill, a drill and a pair of screws, they will be useful for installing the coil in engine compartment, some engines have a standard mounting location, but you will have to attach the switch yourself. An open-end wrench for “13”, socket or ring wrenches for “8” and “10”, as well as a wrench for “38” are also useful.

Replacing contactless electronic ignition

  1. Using a 38 wrench, unscrew the ratchet nut until the marks on the crankshaft pulley and the engine cover match, that is, you need to set the engine to the “TDC” mark.

  2. It is imperative to remember the location of the distributor and the slider itself; a new distributor must be placed in the same position.

  3. It is necessary to remember the wires that are attached to the coil marked B+. After which it can be unscrewed and removed.

  4. Afterwards we will need a 13 key, use it to unscrew the nut of the lock and distributor, and then remove it. You need to be careful not to lose the gasket.

  5. Afterwards you need to secure the switch and screw the black wire to ground.

  6. We install and attach the coil to the body. Standard wires are connected to the corresponding terminals.
  7. Wires from the switch, which show the “+” mark, to the corresponding terminal, the second wire, respectively, to the terminal with the “-” sign.
  8. After installing the distributor, the lock nut is not fully tightened.

  9. The wires from the switch must be connected to the distributor.
  10. After which, the position of the distributor and the slider is checked, the cover is put on and the wires are connected in the sequence 1-3-4-2.

    Also, when installing BSZ, beginners in this business can make basic mistakes, such as, for example: connecting a coil with wires mixed up. Therefore, check everything before starting.

  11. After everything is secured, you can start the engine and begin adjusting the ignition, you can adjust it “by ear.” But of course it is better to use a strobe light.

If after installation electronic ignition your car does not start, and such situations happen quite often, check everything from beginning to end, because you could have mixed up both the high voltage wires to the cylinders and installed the distributor drive incorrectly.

It should immediately be noted that the installation of electronic (contactless) ignition on the VAZ “classic”, despite some investments, is economically justified. As a result of the replacement, some savings in fuel consumption are achieved due to good starting in the cold season, more stable operation in idle mode and more accurate control of the ignition timing.

Although BSZ (non-contact ignition system) kits are now sold, it is still worth listing the parts required to install electronic ignition on VAZ 2106, 2101,2104, 2107, 2105, 2103:

  • ignition coil (027.3705 or equivalent 27.3705);
  • distributor with Hall sensor (38.3706);
  • switch VAZ 2108 (036.3734);
  • set of candles (A 17DV-10);
  • wiring harness (ignition bundle for VAZ 2108).

Ignition installation for VAZ 2106, 2101,2104, 2107, 2105, 2103

  • first of all, it is necessary to set TDC - 4 cylinders (we look at the position of the slider), this must be done by turning the crankshaft ratchet to the mark on the pulley, combining marks 4 and 3 in the figure);

  • dismantle the distributor, spark plugs and coil (remembering the color of the wires suitable for the ignition coil);
  • install new wiring;
  • install a new one high voltage coil ignition;
  • We install the distributor exactly as the old one was (the installation of electronic ignition for VAZ 2106, 2103, 2107 with 1.5 and 1.6 liter engines is slightly different from other models. These engines have different heights of the cylinder block and, accordingly, different lengths of the distributor drive shaft);
  • we attach the switch (it is advisable to find a place on the engine compartment panel);
  • screw in the spark plugs and put on the wires high voltage(working order 1-3-4-2);
  • connect the wiring as in the diagram:

Adjustment

The initial setting of the VAZ ignition angle occurs as follows:

  1. It is necessary to set the crankshaft pulley to the ignition timing mark of 10 degrees.
  2. We place the distributor exactly so that the Hall sensor faces the beginning of the distributor slot.
  3. start and warm up to operating temperature.
  4. we try to start it hot (if the ignition timing is too early, the starter will not turn as expected)

Test drive: you need to pick up a speed of 30-40 km/h, engage 4th gear and give full throttle. You should hear the ringing of “fingers” for 2-3 seconds, and then the engine should pick up speed smoothly. If the ringing continues longer, it is necessary to advance the ignition later by turning the distributor slightly counterclockwise. If there is no ringing, you can do it a little earlier - by turning it clockwise.

Dual-circuit electronic ignition on the VAZ 2107:

Why is there no mention of a strobe light here?

The fact is that specialists in practice do not use a strobe due to the constant stretching of the chain on the engine. Even a new chain after 10-15 thousand miles, after being tightened with a tensioner, stretches so that the marks on the engine do not match, and therefore it is impossible to accurately set the ignition with a strobe light.

Lastly. Installation of electronic ignition VAZ 2107, with injection engine NOT POSSIBLE, as it is already standing. If a wiring harness from a VAZ 2108 was installed and the car does not start, then most likely the connectors of the switch and EPHH were mixed up; they are identical.
