Tire tests for crossovers. Comparison of summer tires for crossovers. The best tires in the mid-price segment

If you are reading this material, then most likely, select a set summer tires for your crossover. Let us immediately note the fact that in the comparison there are only road tires of the SUV size (Sport Utility Vehicle), because the average modern crossover (often with only front-wheel drive) spends most of its life in the city and on asphalt roads, and the “technical” ones Tires with a pronounced “evil” tread are definitely inferior to “civilian” tires both in handling and in comfort of movement on asphalt.

The review included popular tires in the segment, which were tested in different conditions by at least two publications. By the way, about the tests - the results of three tests were taken as the basis for the rating.

The first of them was organized by German magazines Off Road and SUV Magazin. Tests were carried out in winter at the Dunlop test site in Mireval in the south of France. Yes, yes, summer tires were tested in winter, because in this area during the “cold” season the temperature is consistently around 20 degrees Celsius, which is quite consistent with our summer conditions. The Germans tested 6 types of tires with dimensions 215/65 R16.

The program included braking on wet pavement from 80 km/h, braking on dry asphalt from 100 km/h, measuring the maximum safe speed when maneuvering, resistance to longitudinal and lateral hydroplaning, as well as noise and fuel efficiency.

Another German magazine, Auto Bild Allrad, tested 19-inch tires. In addition to standard tests on dry and wet asphalt, the wheels were tested for traction in off-road conditions. The results of these tests were predictably low, so they are not taken into account in the final ranking.

The third series of tests was carried out by the domestic magazine Autoreview. The tests took place in the USA at a special testing ground where different types of “parquet” wheels were examined. The program included tests similar to the Auto Bild Allrad.

Continental ContiCrossContact UHP – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Speaking about the Continental ContiCrossContact UHP, the manufacturer first of all claims the bionic contour of the tread pattern, also known as “cat’s paw” technology. Its main essence is an asymmetrical tread pattern with powerful side blocks and four or five drainage grooves, depending on the tread width, which guarantees the ContiCrossContact UHP tire excellent handling on wet and dry surfaces, even at high speeds. In addition, the official description states that the tire exhibits excellent braking and handling characteristics.

ContiCrossContact UHP is a special tire for powerful all-wheel drive vehicles. Its characteristics - including short braking distances and increased cornering stability - fully meet the requirements of 4WD vehicles such as Porsche Cayenne or BMW X5. For special wheel sizes, there are tires of 23 and 24 inches, which is relevant for the tuning market and high speeds. By the way, the tire is available in several speed indexes V, W, Y and Z (for speeds from 210 km/h to 300 km/h).

TEST RESULTS

German tires performed excellently when braking on wet asphalt, and overall deserved high marks. A fairly important factor is the predictability of Continental tires - loss of traction when maneuvering on dry surfaces occurs a little earlier than with Pirelli, but this happens more smoothly, which allows you to react to the situation in a timely manner. In addition, the low weight and rolling resistance of the ContiCrossContact have a positive effect on fuel consumption, which also contributed to the overall high score.

Among the minuses, it is worth noting the tendency to understeer on dry surfaces and the high price, but otherwise these tires are excellent for everyday use in city and highway conditions.

Note that all tests involved non-identical models of the Continental brand. However, they are all aimed at cars in the SUV segment. In addition, the results allowed us to combine them into one row. All tires performed equally confidently in all disciplines, demonstrating mainly excellent balance.

Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV - summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Goodyear tire EfficientGrip with the SUV tag is designed for light SUVs, crossovers or SUVs. In other words, everything that fits the definition of the American abbreviation Sport Utility Vehicle.

The manufacturer claims that the tire provides excellent fuel economy for new technology Fuel Saving without losing drivability. In addition, the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV summer tire is environmentally friendly - the manufacturer also reports this. However, security and balance of properties are much more important for the client. And this is also included strengths Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV.

TEST RESULTS

Goodyear tires performed consistently average in most tests, only slightly behind Continental and Pirelli. At the same time, American tires showed high resistance to lateral aquaplaning and also turned out to be the quietest. Stable handling in any conditions allows us to recommend the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV for purchase.

The positive picture is overshadowed by unpredictability during emergency maneuvering and low fuel efficiency. For this reason, lovers of aggressive driving are better off choosing tires with more “sporty” characteristics (see below).

Pirelli Scorpion Verde – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Especially for the Sport Utility Vehicle segment, Italian tire makers have packed all the technologies previously available only in tires designed for light sports cars into the Pirelli Scorpion Verde summer tire, aimed at use on crossovers.

First of all, the tires are made from environmentally friendly materials and do not contain aromatic materials. rubber compound, thereby reducing the harmful effects on environment both during production and operation. The tread pattern largely repeats that of the flagship P-Zero Silver model, however, due to its use under heavy load conditions, Scorpion Verde also has its own technological features. In particular, four wide drainage channels, as well as a network of multidirectional channels, thanks to which water is quickly and efficiently removed from the contact patch. In addition, the optimized arrangement of the tread blocks allows for extremely confident maneuvering on the road with low noise levels. In addition, the asymmetrical tread pattern allows the tire to evenly distribute pressure in the contact patch, due to which the contact patch area is always maximum. At the same time, despite the fact that Pirelli Scorpion Verde is designed for crossovers and SUVs, its main elements are the city and the highway.

TEST RESULTS

Italian tires turned out to be very effective when braking on dry surfaces, and in general they showed a rather “sporty” character. Pirelli allows you to “burn out” well on the track, but the relatively low result in rain conditions does not allow these tires to be considered universal. Pirelli Scorpion Verde can only be recommended for use in dry, hot summer conditions.

The disadvantages of the Pirelli include a noticeable tendency to oversteer and a high susceptibility to wear. And in terms of fuel consumption, the Scorpion Verde turned out to be the worst, both according to Off Road/SUV Magazine and according to measurements from Auto Bild Allrad.

Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 4 562 – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Highly efficient summer Hankook tire Dynapro HP2 RA33 is designed for comfortable and powerful cars SUV segment vehicles traveling mainly on civilian roads. When creating the tire, technologists paid Special attention three characteristics. As a result, it was possible to reduce the noise level by 4%, improve grip on wet surfaces by 8% and significantly reduce rolling resistance compared to the previous generation tire.

Enlarge image The tread of the Hankook Dynapro HP2 RA33 tire ensures effective removal of water from the contact patch with the road, reduces the risk of hydroplaning in the transverse direction, and also improves traction on dry and wet roads. “Acoustic” slats - specially shaped slots - reduce noise levels. Increased rigidity of the center rib improves steering precision. The component stiffener, consisting of individual blocks, reduces tire wear during cornering and at the same time improves handling. The increased width of the tread and a balanced frame contribute to a more even distribution of pressure in the contact patch and make braking more effective.

TEST RESULTS

In tests of “crossover” tires, the product of the Korean chemical industry showed the most contradictory results. On the one hand, in braking on wet asphalt, Hankook Dynapro tires turned out to be better than Pirelli and Goodyear, while also showing low level noise.

However, these wheels have relatively poor resistance to aquaplaning, long braking distances on dry surfaces, and low fuel efficiency due to their large weight. Thus, Hankook Dynapro exhibits both positive and negative properties in both dry and rainy weather.

It is worth noting that in absolute terms, Hankook are not that bad. In braking on a dry surface from 100 km/h, the result of Korean tires was 37.9 meters, against 35.1 meters for Pirelli (a difference of 2.8 meters), and 36.4 for Goodyear (a difference of 1.5 meters). Based on the combination of qualities, Hankook Dynapro HP2 is suitable, for example, for residents of rainy regions who rarely travel out of town.

Michelin Latitude Sport 3 – summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

For the summer season of 2014, Michelin is introducing a new road tire with sporty character for a wide range of SUVs - MICHELIN Latitude Sport 3. This is the third generation of road tires in the Latitude range for powerful crossovers from Michelin.

Even before the start of sales, the new product from Michelin had already been recognized by many leading automakers and received homologation for the primary equipment of such advanced SUVs as the Porsche Macan, BMW X5, Volvo XC90. This recognition was made possible by improving several of the most important characteristics for consumers: reducing the braking distance on wet surfaces by 2.7 meters compared to the previous generation MICHELIN Latitude Sport tire, but also significantly improving the tire's mileage, durability and handling.

TEST RESULTS

Tires from the French manufacturer turned out to be somewhat “illegal” in our review, as they were tested only by Auto Bild Allrad magazine. However, it is impossible to completely bypass the once leading supplier of Formula 1 tires.

In tests by a German magazine, the Michelin was rated slightly better than the Pirelli Scorpion Verde. This is justified by the very high resistance to longitudinal and transverse aquaplaning, low noise tires and low rolling resistance, which affects comfort and fuel economy. However, the high price and poor maneuverability on both dry and wet surfaces led to the final low position in the ranking. From positive qualities The Latitude Sport 3 boasts an unexpectedly high level of off-road traction.

Nokian Line (zLine) SUV - out of the competition - summer tires for crossovers, test

OFFICIAL INFORMATION

Nokian zLine is another innovative development from an elite Finnish manufacturer, which has many outstanding characteristics. These tires will be the ideal “pair” for most powerful sports class cars and will allow you to fully unlock their potential. vehicle without compromising your own safety. Like real ninjas, they will give their owner loyalty, accuracy in following all commands and complete silence. The most remarkable thing is that the tires are equally effective on dry and wet surfaces, and this at any speed. Extreme loads, difficult weather conditions or poor-quality surfaces will not be an obstacle for this fast road warrior!

Nokian z-Line is all about speed and safety. So, “smart” UHP silica was used. As a result of special cleaning, it generates extremely little heat, which guarantees the owner the durability of the tires and the longest possible preservation of all the original properties, and if you add to this the reinforced structure of these tires, then rest assured that they will serve you for many years. In addition, the mixture easily adapts to temperature changes, maintaining the tread in working condition even when the asphalt is “blazing.” This same property helps the tire to fully maintain all its characteristics on wet roads.

The basis high efficiency"zLine" is a modernized asymmetric tread. The outer and inner shoulder areas are equipped with powerful wide blocks, emphasizes an Avitech specialist. In this case, the outer shoulder is separated from the central part by a longitudinal rib, which limits the mobility of the blocks when in contact with the road, which increases the stability of the car on turns. The ribs located near the inner shoulder area, thanks to deep transverse grooves, ensure a stable position of the car on the road and guarantee precision control. These same grooves are responsible for removing moisture that enters the wide circumferential grooves separating the central ribs. Additional protection against aquaplaning is provided by the downward transverse grooves of the ribs of the outer shoulder area.

Comfort is also worth mentioning. Nokian zLine tires are virtually silent thanks to the semicircular shape of the recesses on the walls of the transverse grooves. Resembling the imprint of a golf ball, they effectively combat both external and internal noise.

TEST RESULTS

Nokian Line SUV was able to demonstrate in the “Off Road” / “SUV Magazine” tests best performance handling on dry asphalt, and on wet pavement the Finnish tires were second only to the Continental. In the “Auto Bild Allrad” tests, the 19-inch zLine SUV showed itself in a similar way - high predictability and neutral behavior in any conditions should have brought Nokian first place in the overall standings of “parquet” tires, if not for one “but”.

At the very end of winter, a scandal broke out related to the “tire fraud” of the Finnish manufacturer. It turned out that for 10 years the company had been sending test organizers specially prepared “rubber”, the properties of which were often very different from serial tires. For this reason, it was decided to disqualify both Nokian models and invalidate the results.

Let's sum it up

Despite the fact that crossovers in currently accounts for a large share of the new car market both in Russia and in Europe, there are still not very many tires specially tailored for them. On the one hand, this narrows the spectrum when choosing “rubber”; on the other, the specifics of large tires do not allow frankly cheap manufacturers to enter this rapidly developing market. As a result, there is a difference in the properties of crossover buses from different manufacturers not very big. So, for example, when braking on wet asphalt, the difference in the results of the wheels tested in Mireval did not exceed 60 cm (from 25.9 meters for Continental to 26.5 for Goodyear). Thus, in terms of safety, all the presented models performed positively, and you should choose based on your budget and your own driving style. By and large, any of the tested tires can be safely used on your “iron horse”. You just have to take into account the characteristics of each specific tire in order to choose the most effective option for specific conditions.

  • Resistant to being pulled to the side in unusual situations, for example, on an irrigated section of the road.
  • High quality pattern and rubber density.
  • Rolling resistance
  • Maximum effective braking
  • Resistant to high speeds.
  • Wear resistance.

Naturally, this is not a complete list of criteria that simply must be taken into account in order for the ride to be soft and confident. Remember, not all cheap summer tires for a crossover are worthy of a motorist’s attention. Try to pay attention to tire manufacturers that have been verified by the owners. It is very important that your safety, vehicle maneuverability and strong grip are not compromised due to low-quality tires.

Which tire manufacturers and specific models are suitable for a crossover?

The most interesting models are presented by the German company Continental. They have really practical and comfortable tires that can withstand even slight overloads. We recommend paying attention to ContiCrossContact LX2 and their “brothers” – 15-18 mm ContiCrossContact AT.

The latter have a curious bidirectional pattern, symmetrical, with three longitudinal block ribs. In addition, there are a couple of open zones, and as a result, the tires provide the best grip on any type of surface. The merit of self-locking straps in the ribs is increased tread rigidity. So this model will not have problems with clutch. Reviews for the Continental conticrosscontact lx2 are almost always positive. The only thing that confuses the owners is the price, but you have to pay extra for a quality product.

Car owners also like manufacturer Pirelli Cinturato. It is distinguished from all by its environmental friendliness and durability. It has the standard set necessary for a good smooth ride. Rubber, which does not become such a test for nature as regular ones, and a very flexible price range. Yes, Pirelli has every chance to become the new favorite among crossover owners. Size 14-16 inches. The pattern and features are pretty standard, but Pirelli has a huge advantage over other tire companies. After all, it was Pirelli that was able to satisfy the directives from the European Union regarding new tire markings and environmental protection requirements. That's why they were included in the original package. BMW cars. So this manufacturer clearly deserves the attention of crossover owners.

Tire reviews Pirelli cinturato p7 are unambiguous: they perfectly hold the trajectory as in wet asphalt, and at high speeds. There is only one problem - off-road capabilities. In a rut, the car will wander, so it’s better not to leave the road. As for wear resistance, it depends on your luck: some use it for four seasons, while others become disappointed after just one season.

How to choose summer tires for a car: what to look for

Try to look for models that can be described as safe, practical, and with a low percentage of wear resistance. It is best to choose tires recommended specifically for your car. Which ones exactly can be found on the car manufacturer’s website. Remember, you should pay attention to:

  • Wear resistance percentage

Choose best tires for your car is a task that every car owner tackles with greater or less success. Compare and choose: SUV tire ratings

When studying the behavior of tires in off-road conditions, it may turn out that downforce, wheel slip, grip properties, sidewall strength, traction on grass, slopes, bumps and potholes do not meet expectations. Also, many 4x4 tires leave much to be desired in terms of noise and harshness, which negatively affects ride comfort. Efficiency, noise level, accuracy of reactions to steering wheel turns, braking distance and resistance to aquaplaning - all this is determined during testing.

Test results will provide:

  1. Obtaining information about the behavior of off-road wheels in extreme conditions, directional stability when driving straight and when cornering.
  2. Comparison of indicators off-road tires from different manufacturers, determining the reliability of summer, winter studded and non-studded, all-season models in urban conditions and off-road.

Many car enthusiasts choose tires based on testing results conducted by manufacturers or independent experts. We studied the test results of various tire brands and compiled our rating of summer tires for crossovers.

  1. Rolling resistance. This parameter is measured on an appropriate stand. The test tire model is installed on the test wheel, which rolls on a running drum, while downforce acts on the wheel. Rubber with the lowest rolling resistance ensures the lowest fuel consumption and saves money.
  2. Hydroplaning. This parameter affects the car's handling on wet road surfaces. Moisture remaining in the tire tread grooves affects vehicle stability. The measurements are carried out using special sensors that record the difference in the angular speeds of the car's wheels. Measurements are taken on dry and wet asphalt, and the degree of slippage is calculated.
  3. Course stability. This indicator is very important for SUVs; the car should not lose control when cornering, changing lanes from one lane of the road to another, and so on.
  4. Noise level. When tires come into contact with the road surface, they emit a certain noise; the lower it is, the more comfortable the driving process.
  5. Softness. Good summer tires cannot be too soft. The composition of the rubber mixture from which they are made should ensure a smooth ride on uneven road surfaces.
  6. Resistant to high temperature. Summer tires should not melt or deform when in contact with a hot road surface.
  7. Braking distances. Comparison of tires from different brands cannot take place without taking this parameter into account, because driving safety depends on the size of the braking distance. The shorter the braking distance, the more reliable the tires.
