Volkswagen Golf GTI Performance: sporty everyday life

This is not a typo. The name of the hot five-door includes the Performance prefix, for which you will be asked to pay an additional 1,150 euros (unfortunately, this version of the Golf is not presented in Russia). We are hardly talking about another marketing ploy here. This one differs from the regular GTI in appearance by the GTI letters on the brake calipers. What’s more interesting is that the GTI Performance has an adjustable front axle differential lock specially designed for it and the Golf R. Its clutches close under the action of an electronically controlled pump, which creates the necessary pressure. So, at the exit from a bend, the outer wheel, which has better traction, is loaded with traction (up to 100% of the torque can be transferred to it), which makes it possible to more effectively steer the car into the trajectory.

However, acceleration is not the only strong point of this Golf. It received ventilated brake discs of increased diameter on all wheels (the GTI only has these at the front), so it can slow down just as effectively. The only caveat (and here both tested versions are identical) is that the brake pedal is located noticeably higher than the gas pedal, which makes you stop the car more sharply than planned. Over the course of three days of testing, my companions never stopped nodding off at the next deceleration.

The GTI is lowered by 15 mm compared to the standard Golf, but by choosing Comfort among the three driving modes, you can count on a completely lenient attitude towards the fifth point. In general, there is such a variety of algorithms for the operation of numerous systems - from power steering to gear shifts DSG boxes- I personally think it’s redundant. The difference between Comfort and Normal is practically not felt, and Sport could easily be “merged” with a personal mode in which the systems are manually adjusted.

Additional comfort is added comfortable seats, which not only assist in turns with pronounced lateral support, but are also conducive to long voyages. The seats, by the way, like the first GTI, are trimmed with a material with a checkered pattern, which is combined with leather and suede in the spirit of the times.

Volkswagen Golf R: track days

The Volkswagen R division was formed not so long ago - in March 2010. But it’s hard to call the employees who receive their euros here newcomers. The fact is that the R division was transformed from Volkswagen Individual. Remember, it was they who created the exclusive “Tuaregs” and “Phaetons”?

The interior is even more sporty: the trim is combined, but there are no synthetics anymore - only leather and suede. And the panel covering is replete with carbon fiber inserts. We sit behind the wheel and see the letter R on its lower spoke, and the speedometer is already marked up to 320 km/h (for the GTI - only up to 280 km/h). However, do not rush to get your hopes up: the “electronic collar” here also sensitively limits the maximum run-up to 250 km/h.

The EA888 engine under the hood of the Erka is the same as that of the GTI. However, thanks to a whole program of improvements - from a rethought cylinder head to a dual fuel injection system - it already produces 300 hp! It is clear that directing all this nonsense to the front axle alone would be blasphemy, so the Golf R at one time acquired all-wheel drive with a Haldex clutch. It is stated that in its new generation the response time to wheel slipping has been reduced. But there is no place to test this on the dry asphalt of Austrian roads, so we’ll just take the manufacturer’s word for it. According to the passport data, the Erka competes on an equal footing with the all-wheel drive Porsche 911 Carrera 4 in the 0–100 km/h exercise - for both counterparts it will take only 4.9 seconds. Moreover, in the case of Golf you get much more practical car, capable of transporting five companions, taking their luggage along with them. There is something to think about here.

The Golf R's suspension is lowered by another 5 mm. Add here the stiffer suspension settings, and you will understand that this model is not suitable for every day use for sissies. Another bad news lies in the power steering settings. You see, the Golf R, like the GTI, uses a variable steering ratio when turning the steering wheel. That is, from lock to lock you will have to make only 2.1 turns (in a standard Golf - 2.75 turns). This is achieved through a variable-pitch gear rack and a high-power electric motor. So, in normal and comfortable mode in the near-zero position, the electric motor feels like it “falls asleep” every now and then, which leads to slightly nervous steering. Have you ever sat behind the wheel of a computer racing simulator? Then you'll understand what I mean. However, once you switch to the sport driving mode, the amplifier is always ready.

At the same time, the Germans were obviously afraid that the Golf R might be driven by the girlfriend of a tipsy boyfriend - the owner of the car, so in normal mode the gas pedal was made so soft that when starting off, the car literally had to beg to go on the road.
