Chevrolet Lanos what. How to choose which is better: Daewoo Lanos or Chevrolet Lanos. Rebirth of Daewoo Lanos

Before answering the question of interest to readers, “Where are Chevrolet Lanos assembled?” It is important to note that this model is also called Daewoo Lanos. This is the same car, the name of which often causes confusion. The thing is that since 2005, the Daewoo company has been owned by the American giant General Motors. That is why, from that moment on, the model is called Chevrolet Lanos on the domestic market.

However, let’s not delve into demagoguery and get down to the main issue of the article.

Assembly location

It is worth immediately noting that, despite the great popularity of the Chevrolet Lanos model, domestic factories do not produce this model. For Russia, the car is exported from Ukraine, where the model is called ZAZ Lanos, and is made at the Zaporozhye Automobile Plant.

At the Zaporozhye enterprise there is full cycle car assembly, which includes the production of individual components, body welding and interior assembly, as well as car painting and quality control.

In 2009, the Zaporozhye branch stopped cooperating with General Motors. Therefore, the model name on Russian market changed to ZAZ Chance. However, the name is the only thing that has changed in the model, since the assembly concept, technical characteristics and other aspects of the car remained the same.

Build quality

Photo: finished cars straight from the assembly line

I would like to immediately note one important point: domestic car enthusiasts are attracted to the Chevrolet Lanos primarily due to the fact that the car is not very demanding when repairing, and you can find a lot of necessary parts and components at any car market. Sherola Lanos owners do not have to wait weeks for the delivery of the necessary spare parts.

But, as it turned out, this plus is a double-edged sword. After all, how can you hope for high quality a car, parts for which can be obtained at any corner.

Experts negatively note the quality of the body assembly, individual interior parts and the interior as a whole, and also the paint coating is definitely not the best. The main reason for this lies in the fact that the developers tried to save money on the assembly process using all available methods. And they did this so that the total cost of the car was low, and every resident of Russia could purchase it.

If we talk about the shortcomings in more detail, then first of all it is worth noting the unsuitability of the body to corrosion. The metal itself from which the body is assembled is very thin, which often leads to deformation. The plastic used in the interior trim is also not impressive, because it is very scratch-resistant, but it will not hold it together. As noted above, the paintwork is not highest level, which also promotes corrosion.

Those who have driven a foreign car for some time will most likely not like the Chevrolet Lanos audio system, primarily because of its primitiveness and narrow functionality. Therefore, experienced car enthusiasts recommend immediately replacing it with something more modern.

Stages of the assembly process

Photo: Lanos assembly process

On at the moment Chevrolet Lanos assembly technology includes four stages. Production begins with the use of pressing equipment to produce parts and components for the future Cherole Lanos. After this, the body parts arrive at the welding shop, where specialists, using advanced Japanese and German technology, weld them together. Then, the finished body is sent to the leakage control workshop.

At the third stage, when the body is already equipped with a hood and doors, it is sent for painting. There are 9 robots installed in a special workshop that are capable of processing 32 bodies per hour.

The last stage includes all the final assembly processes, including the installation of power units and transmission. Typically, the duration of stage 4 of production does not exceed 2 minutes.

Assembly Features

At the Zaporozhye plant, Chevrolet Lanos will be equipped with three economical power units. These are engines with a volume of 1.3 liters, 1.4 liters and 1.5 liters, respectively. All of them successfully cooperate with new transmission, developed by Ukrainian engineers.

Before the assembly of the Chevrolet Lanos began, the workshops of the Zaporozhye enterprise were significantly modernized. American investors allocated a large sum of money to upgrade the plant's equipment.

Conclusion

Chevrolet Lanos cars are supplied to the domestic market directly from the Zaporozhye ZAZ plant. This model is in great demand in Russia, primarily due to its low cost. However, as evidenced by reviews from owners, the Ukrainian-assembled Chevrolet Lanos has a large number of shortcomings, the reason for which lies in the financial policy of the company, which relies on savings. And so far she’s succeeding quite well.

Automobile Chevrolet Lanos sedan

Daewoo Lanos is a lightweight (subcompact) front-wheel drive car with sedan or hatchback body styles, developed and originally produced by Daewoo, was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1997 under the name Daewoo Lanos as Daewoo replacement Nexia. It was designed in collaboration with a number of reputable German and English engineering companies at the Daewoo research center in Woking. The car body was designed by Italian designer Giorgetto Giugiaro (ItalDesign). With the entry of Daewoo into the concern General Motors On April 30, 2002, the car began to be sold under the Chevrolet brand.

Background

It all started in 1992, when the joint venture between Daewoo and General Motors ceased to exist. After this, Daewoo decided to develop new cars on its own to replace the old ones. The Lanos development program began in the fall of 1993 with a comparative study of competing models from twenty different manufacturers, the results of which Toyota models Tercel, Opel Astra And Volkswagen Golf were named as the most important competitors.

Lanos was designed in collaboration with a number of reputable German and English engineering companies at the Daewoo research center in Woking. The following companies participated in the development: Rochester Products Division (engine), Delco Electronics (brakes, including ABS), GM Powertrain Europe (automatic transmission), Italdesign (body, structural analysis, electrical equipment, prototype manufacturing), PARS Passive Rückhaltesysteme GmbH ( airbag) and Porsche (concept car - diagnostics, structural analysis, suspension and components brake system, experimental production observation). The body design was developed by the famous Italian studio ItalDesign under the direction of Giorgetto Giugiaro. Its design was chosen as a result of a competition in which 4 variants of the car's appearance took part.

By the end of 1995, 150 prototypes had already been manufactured. The model development program included many tests in various places. The safety test included stability and reliability testing at high speeds, which took place at the test site of the technical center in Worthing (UK), as well as brake testing on the Großglockner mountain in Austria. Low temperature testing was carried out in Canada, Sweden and Russia (Moscow and Khabarovsk), and high temperature testing was carried out in the USA (Death Valley), Oman (Nazwa), Australia (Alice Springs), Spain (Barcelona) and Italy (Nardo). The engines, partially copied from Opel, were fine-tuned by specialists from the Porsche engineering department.

In the end Lanos car(with the factory index T100) was developed and put into production in 30 months and cost the company $420 million. This is Daewoo's first in-house design. Small middle class car (Class C) Daewoo Lanos, developed on the platform Daewoo Nexia, was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1997, in the same year the car began to be produced in South Korea. The model included three body types: a three-door hatchback, a five-door hatchback and a sedan. The cars were equipped with engines with a displacement of 1.3 to 1.6 liters and a power of 75 to 106 hp. A limited edition Lanos Cabrio was also created in the convertible body, which was produced from 1997 to 2002. At first, Daewoo Lanos were produced only in Korea. But already in the same 1997, Lanos began to be assembled in Poland at the FSO plant.

In 2002, General Motors Daewoo Auto & Technology was created, after which Lanos began to be sold under the Chevrolet brand of General Motors (GM). GM has made its changes to appearance car, namely: the shape of the trunk lid, radiator trim and rear wings, shapes of internal handles and side door trims, shape rear lights.

Since 2004, Chevrolet Lanos has been assembled at the ZAZ plant. Official deliveries of cars to Russia under the Chevrolet Lanos brand began in 2005, and since 2009 - under the name ZAZ Chance

Review

Specifications

The 1.5-liter Chevrolet Lanos power unit is based on Daewoo engine Nexia has the same displacement of 1.5 liters, but contains some design differences in the ignition and power systems. To reduce the toxicity of exhaust gases, the power unit is equipped with a recirculation system. To comply with Euro-2 standards, the model is equipped catalytic converter exhaust gases. The 1.6-liter engine is a 16-valve engine with obviously better performance characteristics (power, efficiency). In general, the engine range of numerous Chevrolet Lanos clones existing around the world is much more diverse and in addition to the already mentioned Korean engines, there are other variations, for example with power units from the Melitopol plant (MEMZ) on the ZAZ L-1300/Sens models presented carburetor engines 1.3 l and injection volumes of 1.3 l and 1.4 l.

The front suspension of Lanos is MacPherson type, independent, spring, with stabilizer lateral stability. Rear suspension semi-independent, spring. Brakes The front wheels are disc, the rear wheels are drum. Steering gear– rack and pinion type, on some cars – with hydraulic booster. The car turned out to be quite maneuverable, with a small turning radius. Height ground clearance is 165 mm for cars intended for CIS countries. Undoubted advantage - spacious trunk(395 l), however, the seat backs, although they fold out, do not form a flat surface with the floor. But it will be a bit cramped for passengers in the back, especially large people, as the lack of knee room affects them.

The security equipment does not shine with wealth. IN basic configuration Lanos does not even have an airbag; it is offered only in the SE version. The car is equipped with inertial diagonal seat belts for the driver, front passenger and outer rear row passengers; a lap belt is provided for the middle passenger. In crash tests (Euro NCAP, 1998; ARCAP, 2006), the car performed far from brilliantly. Low results in the tests (incomplete three and two stars, respectively) are associated with insufficient saturation of technologies to prevent consequences in the event of an accident. On the other hand, this is not bad, considering the price category.

Modifications of the Lanos family model line

  • Daewoo Lanos, aka Chevrolet car Lanos, a 4-door sedan, is the most common model. If you compare how much a new Lanos costs, add to this the availability of spare parts, and “omnivorousness” in terms of fuel, it will become clear why it is the people's foreign car in the countries of the former USSR that is most willingly used as taxi cars.
  • Daewoo Lanos/Chevrolet Lanos 5-door hatchback. The exterior and interior are almost identical appearance sedan.
  • Daewoo Lanos Sport 3-door sedan, also known as Lanos coupe. Pseudo-sports version. I was going back to South Korea. It was discontinued at the end of 2003. Currently considered a rare model. It has different front and rear bumpers from the sedan and 5-door hatchback, a spoiler visor, “skirts”, massive rear optics, “Sport” stampings on the front fenders, and alloy wheels. The 3-door Lanos 2003 was equipped with a 106-horsepower 1.6-liter Opel engine and automatic transmission. Accelerated up to 200 km/h. It was equipped with two front airbags and reinforced seat belts, including for rear seat passengers. Due to the fact that the model is no longer produced, the original ones are in special demand among owners. body parts, especially non-standard, longer than usual doors.
  • Daewoo Lanos II (factory index T-150) is a sedan, which, after minor restyling and rebranding, is sold in Russia as new Chevrolet Lanos, also known as ZAZ Lanos. It has a slightly different shape of the rear lights, and a modified profile due to the elongated geometry of the rear wings and trunk. The “Muzzle” acquired a signature Chevrolet cross and a wider radiator grille. The Chevrolet Lanos catalog includes airbags. Simultaneously with the start of sales of Daewoo Lanos II in 2002, production of this model was discontinued in Korea. The Chevrolet Lanos car gave way to the family Chevrolet Aveo. From 2004 to the present, cars of the Lanos T-100 and T-150 line are assembled on a full scale only at the Ukrainian AvtoZAZ plant.
  • Daewoo Sens, aka ZAZ Sensnew car Ukrainian-assembled Lanos in the back of a 4-door sedan. Factory index L-1300 with an engine and transmission from Tavria, which significantly reduced the price of the car. Sens are equipped with a Melitopol-made MeMZ engine, unconventional for the rest of the Lanos family, with a volume of 1.3 liters and a power of 70 hp. Ukrainian Chevrolet Lanos 2008, instead of a 1.3-liter engine, is equipped with a new injection 1.4-liter MEMZ-317 engine with a power of 77 horsepower produced by the same Melitopol plant with automatic transmission transmissions made in Korea. The “powering up” of the engine was the reason that from the end of 2008 - beginning of 2009 on Sens ( new Chevrolet Lanos) the price rose by about 7%. Due to the end of the contract between AvtoZAZ and General Motors for the use of the Chevrolet brand, the 2009 Lanos is sold on the Russian market under the ZAZ Chance brand.
  • Lanos-pickup aka Lanos-van (heel) is a limited edition assembled in Ukraine as a result of an upgrade. The Chevrolet Lanos 2005 van is assembled at AvtoZAZ.
  • Lanos-Electro is an environmentally friendly concept Lanos is a car announced by the same AvtoZAZ as part of the “Capital Auto Show” held in Kyiv in 2010. The green Chevrolet Lanos is equipped with eight 15 kW batteries, which theoretically allows you to drive about 100 km on one charge.
  • Lanos-cabrio, aka Lanos Sport only without a roof, is known only in the form of pictures - as a visual idea, a bold conceptual development of Daewoo.

Options and configurations of Chevrolet Lanos

The Lanos model range was represented by four main configuration options:

  • S - the minimum basic configuration of the Chevrolet Lanos, almost bare - no electric windows, CD players or other useful options. U official dealers There was a joke that even asking how much a Chevrolet Lanos cost was considered indecent.
  • SE - slightly different from the basic assembly. Electric heating added to options rear window, bumpers to match the body color, rear fog light.
  • SE Plus – the kit includes electric headlight control, partial galvanization of body parts.
  • SX – CD player, tape recorder, radio, electric windows, electric rear-view mirrors, fog headlights.
  • limited Lanos Sport equipment - for some time this equipment was offered with options similar to SE + SX, black and red leather and metallic silver interior trim elements. For such a Chevrolet Lanos, the price was completely unbudgetary and, depending on the amount of stuffing squeezed in, could even shake the imagination of Maserati owners.

Currently in production, the Ukrainian new Chevrolet Lanos is available in three main configuration options:

  • S – in the basic assembly, cars are equipped with plastic bumpers in body color, a full-size spare wheel, a rear sofa that folds out in a 6/4 ratio, and electrically heated rear windows. Lanos Chevrolet interior is textile, most often monochrome.
  • SE - this Lanos car is equipped with a power steering column, electric front window lifts, and two front airbags on the driver's side.
  • SX – new Lanos 2012 equipped central locking, tachometer, front and rear fog lights, air conditioning.

Advantages and disadvantages of the car

  • Noise insulation leaves much to be desired; the engine can be clearly heard in the cabin (on high speed), suspension performance, heater fan noise, but for many car enthusiasts the price outweighs this annoying drawback.
  • The 1.5-liter eight-valve engine is torquey and well-matched to the gearbox, but its low power of 86 hp is unlikely to please fans of reckless driving.
  • The steering is also not designed for active drivers, since at high speeds it hardly allows you to maintain the trajectory.
  • The brakes lack information; ABS is very useful on slippery roads, but it is only available as an option in more expensive trim levels.
  • The doors open and close quite softly, but at the same time they emit a characteristic grinding sound, however, many are ready to forgive this when compared with domestic cars.
  • For a tall person, getting into the driver's seat is simply extremely uncomfortable, as is the driver's seat itself. The adjustment is ineffective, so a driver with outstanding height will have nowhere to move; when trying to adjust, he will have to choose between hand comfort or ease of pressing the pedals.
  • The rear seat is quite cramped for three people: the outer ones rest their heads on the side pillars, and the comfort of the middle passenger cannot be envied. Dacia Logan, for example, with its luxurious passenger seat, is clearly no match for Lanos.
  • Visibility and rear view mirrors. The visibility from the driver's seat cannot be called good - the width of the A-pillars leaves much to be desired, despite the fact that the external mirrors are quite large, the road is not very well visible in them.
  • Windshield wipers leave quite a bit of uncleaned surface on the top of the windshield.
  • The interior of the car is wretchedly spartan, everything is strict and without frills, the inside is hard gray plastic. Pockets in the front door trims and a modest-sized glove compartment.
  • The side windows go up and down with little effort.
  • The trunk volume is quite modest, but it can be increased by first folding the rear seat.
  • But gasoline consumption in the urban cycle is completely immodest; the 10.4 liters per 100 km promised by the manufacturer turns into 12-13 liters, especially for new cars that are at the break-in stage. However, the cause can often be a low grade of gasoline.

After analyzing advertisements in the press and on specialized websites, we determined the “red price” for Lanos depending on the year of manufacture. Let's make a reservation that due to the fact that the odometer is easy to twist, you can not pay attention to the mileage declared by the seller at all. Just keep in mind that on average a car runs about 25-30 thousand km per year. That is, a 5-year-old Lanos has covered at least 125–150 thousand km.

  • UP TO $4 thousand We found about 5 cars for this price. All of them were produced before 2003 and have body damage. The engine has been overhauled at least twice. The condition of the chassis also leaves much to be desired. And the worst thing is the interior, which is so dirty that you need to do several dry cleanings to get rid of the old smell. Putting such a car in order will cost another $2.5–3 thousand. But keep in mind that if the geometry of the body is damaged after a serious accident, it will no longer be possible to make a car of any age fully functional.
  • $4–7 thousand For that kind of money you can find a more or less lively car from 2003–2005, but with significant flaws. For example, a “dead” engine, crushed wings, problems with the chassis and electronics. If there are only one or two problems and the geometry of the body is not broken, then you can buy such a car, but you need to fix all the damage immediately (one problem leads to another). So, you can do a complete overhaul for $700, rebuild the chassis for $500, or, for example, replace the muffler for $200. That is, you need to plan the purchase so that at least $1-1.5 thousand remains in reserve. But if everything is worn out, for example, the car was used in a taxi, then restoration will take at least $3 THOUSAND. That is, it makes sense to look at a newer car.
  • $7–9 thousand For that kind of money you can choose a good option from 5 to 2 years old. Moreover, it makes sense to pay more for good equipment: HBO, air conditioning, power accessories and a good radio. The engine, chassis and body at this age, if the owner took care of the car and did not get into an accident, are alive.

Equipment

The car is sold in several modifications: S (basic), SE (improved) and SX (comfort). Unlike the base version, the SE version has power steering, front electric windows, air conditioning, a tachometer and central locking. A car in the SX configuration is even preferable: it has front fog lights, airbag, and the steering wheel is height adjustable. In addition, the car is equipped with ABS, and the wheels are 14 inches (on a regular one - 13 inches).

1.5 and 1.6 liter engines: technical nuances

Lanos is equipped with 1.5 liter (86 hp) and 16-valve 1.6 liter (106 hp) engines. Both engines are similar to Opel engines developed in the 80s (from the Kadett E and Ascona C models). The disadvantage of both is high fuel consumption in the city (about 10 liters per 100 km).

At first glance, it is better to buy a car with a more powerful engine. But mechanics at various service stations say that if it breaks down, the overhaul will cost a third more ($1000 instead of 600–700), and given that we are choosing a new car, capital may be needed in just a couple of months. Note that both engines are sensitive to timing belt breaks - the valves bend. Therefore, immediately after purchasing a new car, we recommend replacing the belt and rollers. At the same time, the replacement technicians will inspect the water pump for leaks (“life” is about 200 thousand km).

We also advise you to pay attention to the cooling system, a malfunction of which can lead to a quick overhaul. This is not difficult to do: start the car, let the engine warm up and feel the lower pipe of the cooling system. If it does not warm up, you need to change the thermostat. At the same time, look at the cooling system fan: if it does not turn on after warming up, you need to change the sensor responsible for this. And, naturally, there should be no leaks in the system.

With proper maintenance, the service life of the motors is about 300 thousand km or about 10 years. But due to the low quality of our gasoline, engines often do not last even 150 thousand. A sign of an imminent overhaul is blue smoke from the chimney on an unheated engine.

The valve seals are the first to go after the agreed mileage, and at the same time the hydraulic compensators are also coming to an end - repairs will cost about $300. Also, due to bad gasoline, the fuel pump may break down: the filter mesh becomes clogged, and it burns out due to excessive load.

Another problem that is common to many cars older than 5 years is electrics. Sensors burn and fail high voltage wires. So it is best to replace these parts ($100) after purchase. However, the described disadvantages are typical for cars of any manufacturer.

We look at the interior and body

Based on the condition of the interior, you can often reconstruct the history of the car. First of all, look at the steering wheel: after 200 thousand km it is so polished that it even shines. If the car’s age is small, then it most likely worked in a taxi or somewhere in a company. Even if the steering wheel was changed before sale, pedals with worn rubber pads can also judge this mileage.

Now fold down the backrests of the rear row seats. If the car was used to carry cargo (for example, a foreman drove it), it will show signs of wear. The trunk, worn out from the inside, speaks of the same thing. By the way, if the plastic fasteners on the trunk are damaged or missing, it means it was removed to repair the body - the car was damaged.

You can confirm this guess by removing the spare tire - after a hasty repair, there will be traces of welding and/or putty underneath it.

You can also determine from the fastenings whether the bumpers have been removed: craftsmen usually install non-original bolts, which is immediately visible. Take this seriously: the front bumper could have been removed after an accident (the accident was hidden by replacing the hood).

How much does a Chevrolet Lanos cost?

Since 2009, Lanos has been sold on the Russian market in more than 12 modifications. For remnants of imported Chevrolet Lanos 2012, the price is approximately equal to the cost of Ukrainian Lanos-Chances (ZAZ Chance) and starts from 250-260 thousand rubles. The most expensive Lanos are 5-door hatchbacks with 1.5-liter engines in the SX configuration. For such a Lanos car the price starts from 355 thousand rubles. ZAZ Lanos can be bought for the amount from 250 to 350 thousand rubles, depending on body type, engine power and configuration. Ukrainianized Lanos ZAZ Sens costs about 220 thousand rubles. Lanos van (ZAZ Lanos Pickup) for sale for 250-280 thousand rubles. For any color in the metallic version you need to pay about 5 thousand rubles. On secondary market for Lanos 2007 the price is at least half less than the price of a Chevrolet Lanos recent years release.

Price of a new Chevrolet Lanos in minimum configuration starts with a sum of order 250 thousand rubles, which allows the car to confidently remain on the list of best-selling cars. A little more high cost Chevrolet Lanos remaining in the warehouses of official dealers does not prevent them from being sold out no less actively than the new ZAZ Chance. The plans of the Russian representative office of AvtoZAZ are to win at least 2% of the car market and retain the title of one of the best-selling Chevrolet Lanos 2012 budget cars peace.

Chevrolet Lanos(read owner reviews below) - this is one of the most affordable foreign cars on the market Russian Federation. Available in three trim levels: SX, S, SE. Engine power for sedan cars is 86 hp. With. (volume 1.5) or 70 l. With. (volume 1.3).

A little history

The car was developed by the company and was first presented at the Geneva Motor Show in 1997 under the name Daewoo Lanos (T-100 - factory index). Later, in 2000, a minor restyling was carried out, as a result of which the shape and trunk lid (T-150) were changed. After the acquisition of a controlling stake in Daewoo by GM, some T-150 vehicles began to be sold in a number of countries under the well-known Chevrolet Lanos brand. Feedback from the first buyers of the old car under the new name was in most cases positive. The car was produced in Poland (from 1997 to 2008) and in South Korea (from 1997 to 2004), as well as in some other countries.

In Ukraine, from 2001 to 2010, a car was assembled under Daewoo brand Lanos T-100 with engines from Daewoo with a volume of one and a half liters ( five-door hatchback and sedan) from Polish parts. In addition, brands of cars and the L-1300 were also produced here for the domestic market, and starting in 2004, the Zaporozhye automobile plant began production of the Chevrolet Lanos, the technical characteristics of which were fully consistent with the T-150 variation with a sedan-type body design.

However, in 2009, the contract between and GM DAT expired. Since then, on both the Russian and Ukrainian markets, these cars have been sold under the ZAZ Chance brand in the three trim levels listed above.

About the car

The talented Italian artist Giorgetto Giugiaro worked on the design of the Chevrolet Lanos. The car still looks harmonious in traffic and does not stand out among other modern foreign cars.

The interior is quite spacious, and you can guarantee that neither the driver nor the passengers will get tired after long trip. The front panel is made of inexpensive but high-quality plastic. The dashboard has all the necessary indicators and gauges that are easy to view and conveniently located. By the way, the tachometer is not installed on all Chevrolet Lanos cars. Owner reviews indicate that luggage compartment The car is quite roomy - 322 liters, and with the rear seats disassembled in a 60/40 proportion - 958 liters. So loading a couple of bicycles or several bags of potatoes into a car is a completely solvable matter.

Chevrolet Lanos. Specifications and safety

Reinforced body structure (reinforced rear and front pillars, passenger frame), inertial belts, driver - the manufacturer took care of both active and passive safety driver and passengers. The latest cars in Chevrolet crash tests received a rating of 10.5, but previously it was only 6 points!

The basic package includes a one and a half liter engine (86 hp), radio and audio preparation, speaker system with two pairs of speakers, steel wheels, bumpers in body color, spare tire, front cup holders, heated rear window, rear mudguards, driver airbag,

Chevrolet Lanos. Owner reviews

We can say that the Chevrolet Lanos is a car that combines price and quality ratio as well as possible. Simplicity, reliability of operation, accessibility to maintenance - all this is Chevrolet Lanos. Reviews from owners indicate that in most cases Lanos produced in South Korea and Poland combine best quality, assembly and anti-corrosion treatment of metal. If you are faced with a choice between Ukrainian and Polish Lanos, then choose the latter. However, keep in mind that when buying a used car, it is important to know under what conditions it was used.

Chevrolet Lanos) – not only people's car, but also one of the most inexpensive foreign cars that have ever been presented on our market. Therefore, in most cases, cars of this model are considered as an alternative to used cars from the Russian automobile industry. This car considered one of best options only if the budget for buying a car is small; also, Lanos is perfect for novice drivers. Like most used cars, the Chevrolet Lanos has a number of disadvantages, but what they are and what you need to pay attention to when buying, I will tell you in this article.

A little history:

The first Lanos was presented by the Korean company Daewoo at the Geneva Motor Show, but development began much earlier, in 1993. The body design was developed by the famous design studio ItalDesign under the direction of Giorgetto Giugiaro. The power units were partially borrowed from Opel and improved by Porsche engineers. After General Motors bought a 42% stake in the Daewoo enterprise in 2002, it was decided to jointly produce this car model. Initially, the car was presented in three body types - three- and four-door hatchback and sedan. Also, there was a limited edition of convertibles (produced from 1997 to 2002). Until 2002, Lanos was assembled in Korea, but after the launch of mass production, the car began to be assembled in Poland, as well as in Ukraine and Russia. Since 2008, the car has been produced only at the UkrAVTO plant in Zaporozhye.

Weaknesses of used Chevrolet Lanos

The paintwork and metal of body elements are of rather poor quality, as a result, corrosion on the car body appears after 3-5 years of operation. Most often, rust appears on the arches, sills, door edges, front of the hood and trunk lid. Therefore, in order to protect the car from the effects of corrosion, it is recommended to treat the body and underbody with anti-corrosion agents at least once every 3-4 years. Over time, moisture appears in the cabin and trunk, and there are also complaints about the durability of the trunk lock.

Engines

During the entire production period, the Chevrolet Lanos was equipped with only a 1.5 liter gasoline power unit with an output of 86 hp. One of the most common problems with this engine is oil leakage through the cylinder head gasket (the gasket needs to be replaced every 30-40 thousand km). The engine is equipped with a timing belt drive, with a service replacement interval every 60,000 km. However, it is better not to delay the replacement and carry it out a little earlier, since after 50,000 km there is a high probability of a belt break, which leads to serious consequences (bends the valves). Many owners, in order to save money, refuel with low-quality fuel; this leads to rapid clogging and premature failure of the fuel pump.

The cooling system often presents surprises - the radiator stops functioning, the pump and thermostat fail. If the malfunction is not detected in time, this can lead to overheating of the engine, and, in the future, to expensive repairs (the cylinder head is affected). Sensors for the injection system, absolute pressure, and position are also not famous for their reliability. throttle valve and lambda probe. A fairly common problem is when the engine starts to run unstably (idle revs fluctuate), to fix the problem the sensor needs to be replaced idle speed. Among the advantages of the engine, we can highlight its unpretentiousness to fuel quality and a fairly long service life up to overhaul(up to 500,000 km).

Transmission

Chevrolet Lanos was equipped only with a five-speed manual transmission transfers for which no alternative was provided. Most of the complaints here relate not so much to reliability and durability, but to its user characteristics. Most often, the transmission is criticized for unclear gear shifting and noisy operation. If the box starts to buzz a lot, try to change the oil every 30,000 km; this procedure slightly improves the situation, but does not completely solve the problem. Once every 50-60 thousand km, adjustment of the rocker is required, which becomes loose for no particular reason. WITH On average, the clutch lasts 50-60 thousand km, but with careful use it can last 100,000 km.

Chevrolet Lanos suspension reliability

Chevrolet Lanos is equipped with a semi-independent suspension: front - MacPherson strut, rear - beam with hinges attached to the body trailing arms. To increase lateral stability and improve handling, a stabilizer bar is installed inside the beam, the ends of which are fixed to the suspension arms. As for the reliability of the suspension, it is difficult to call it durable. The biggest criticism is the service life of the shock absorbers and their springs, which in rare cases exceeds 30,000 km. Wheel bearings they may start to buzz after 20,000 km (the rear ones require adjustment), but often they last 30-40 thousand km, and they will last about the same ball joints. Silent blocks and support bearings run on average 50-70 thousand km.

As for the reliability of the steering rack, it all depends on the operating conditions, but if we take the average, then its service life is 60-80 thousand km. Steering ends and rods begin to knock after 50,000 km. It is worth noting that all data refers only to original parts, also, you need to understand that most owners take inexpensive analogues, and their resource may be several times less. The biggest advantage of the Chevrolet Lanos chassis is that its repair is quite cheap, and if you have even the slightest idea about the device running car, you can do it yourself.

Traditionally, for budget cars, interior finishing materials are of low quality, as a result, squeaks, knocks and other annoying sounds become commonplace. Also, due to poor quality, over time, the stove control buttons and other plastic elements begin to break off. Electrical wiring is also not famous for its durability; over the years, this negatively affects the performance of the interior electrical equipment (failures begin).

This car is the main contender for the role of the first car, and it will also be a good alternative to AvtoVAZ. If we talk about the reliability of this car, then the main components and assemblies, with proper maintenance, will not cause many problems. In this price range, the Chevrolet Lanos is perhaps the most interesting option, but if you have the opportunity to buy a car a little more expensive, then it is better to take a closer look at it.

If you are the owner of this car model, please describe the problems that you encountered while using the car. Perhaps your review will help the readers of our site when choosing a car.

Chevrolet Lanos is a front-wheel drive car of class C, which replaced the Daewoo Nexia. The model was first presented at the 1997 Geneva Motor Show and was initially produced under the Daewoo brand. An attempt to establish production in Russia was made in 1998, when the Taganrog automobile plant began production of this model under the name Doninvest Assol, but in 2000 production was curtailed due to problems with the supply of components.

In parallel, large-unit assembly of the car was carried out in Poland (since 1997) and in Ukraine (1998 - Zaporozhye Automobile Plant). In 2003, ZAZ achieved more serious localization (including stamping, welding, painting and body assembly) of Lanos models, including even modifications with a Ukrainian-made engine and gearbox. Only Ukrainian-assembled cars equipped with Korean 8-valve 1.5 liter (86 hp) and 16-valve 1.6 liter (106 hp) engines were supplied to the CIS market. Since 2009, the model has undergone some technical transformations and began to be offered under the ZAZ Chance brand.

There are three trim levels in which the Chevrolet Lanos was presented on the CIS market: S, SE and SX. The basic package offers a minimum level of equipment, including a full-size spare wheel, audio equipment (speakers, antenna, wiring), metallic body paint, bumpers in body color, tires on steel wheels 185/60 R14, folding rear seats in a 60/40 ratio. The SE package additionally comes with power steering, electric front windows and a driver's airbag. The SX package, in addition to the above, includes air conditioning and front fog lights, ABS, tachometer, and central locking.

The 1.5-liter Chevrolet Lanos power unit is developed on the basis of the Daewoo Nexia engine with the same 1.5-liter displacement, but contains some design differences in the ignition and power systems. To reduce the toxicity of exhaust gases, the power unit is equipped with a recirculation system. To comply with Euro-2 standards, the model is equipped with a catalytic exhaust gas converter. The 1.6-liter engine is a 16-valve engine with obviously better performance characteristics (power, efficiency). In general, the engine range of numerous Chevrolet Lanos clones existing around the world is much more diverse and in addition to the already mentioned Korean engines, there are other variations, for example, with power units from the Melitopol plant (MEMZ) on the ZAZ L-1300/Sens models, represented by carburetor engines 1 .3 l and injection volumes of 1.3 l and 1.4 l.

The front suspension of Lanos is MacPherson type, independent, spring, with anti-roll bar. The rear suspension is semi-independent, spring. The front wheel brakes are disc, the rear wheels are drum. The steering device is of the rack-and-pinion type, on some cars with hydraulic booster. The car turned out to be quite maneuverable, with a small turning radius. The ground clearance is 165 mm for cars intended for the CIS countries. An undoubted advantage is the spacious trunk (395 l), but the seat backs, although they fold out, do not form a flat surface with the floor. But it will be a bit cramped for passengers in the back, especially large people, as the lack of knee room affects them.

The security equipment does not shine with wealth. The basic Lanos configuration does not even have an airbag; it is offered only in the SE version. The car is equipped with inertial diagonal seat belts for the driver, front passenger and outer rear row passengers; a lap belt is provided for the middle passenger. In crash tests (Euro NCAP, 1998; ARCAP, 2006), the car performed far from brilliantly. Low results in the tests (incomplete three and two stars, respectively) are due to the lack of technology to prevent consequences in the event of an accident. On the other hand, this is not bad, considering the price category.

For a long time, Lanos was considered the most popular car of the Chevrolet brand. At one time, its main competitors were considered Lada Kalina and Renault Logan. However, it was not able to significantly displace these models on the Russian market, even thanks to the low price and the absence of serious problems with spare parts. The position in the secondary market is also not very strong - used Lanos quickly lose value. On the other hand, this is one of the most available cars and, being in good technical condition, can be a good purchase for a poor buyer, of course, taking into account a realistic assessment of the mileage planned for the future.
