BMW X5, which received the E53 index. According to old tradition, the model was presented to the public at the Detroit Auto Show. It marked the beginning of a completely new approach to creating cars of this class. Many car enthusiasts positioned the X5 “BMW E53” as an SUV, but the creators insisted that the car belongs to the class of crossovers with an increased degree of cross-country ability and sporty functionality.

A little history

When creating the first X5, the Germans did not hide the fact that their main task was to surpass Range Rover, releasing the same respectable and powerful car, but with more modern equipment. Initially, the X5 "BMW E53" was produced in its homeland - in Bavaria. After BMW acquired Rover, the car began to be produced in America. Thus, the car mastered both Europe and the USA.

Of course, such an auto giant as BMW could not release a bad car. The X5 E53 model has everything that the company is famous for: build quality, precision electronics, reliability of materials and other distinctive features of the Bavarians. The hero of our today's discussion is designed for comfortable trips on any surface and light off-road. In addition, the car was assigned a class sports cars.

General information

The first generation model had a load-bearing body structure. It was replete with electronic systems, equipped with all-wheel drive, independent suspension, and increased ground clearance. The E53 series was distinguished by its stylish and spacious interior, which was very discreet, kind and at the same time luxurious. The standard equipment of the machine included:

  • wood and leather inserts (classic for the German company);
  • orthopedic chairs;
  • steering wheel adjustment;
  • climate control;
  • electric sunroof;
  • very roomy trunk.

To some extent, the E53 model was still able to catch up and surpass the Range Rover. Many details were openly copied from legendary SUV: solid exterior, double-leaf rear door. From Rover, the X5 also came with some functions, for example, downhill speed control.

Technical characteristics of X5 "BMW E53"

The first generation of the legendary crossover was repeatedly modified both externally and structurally. One gets the impression that the Germans wanted to get ahead of their time and bring their creation to complete perfection. Initially, the car was produced equipped with three different options power plant:

  1. Gasoline engine 6-cylinder in-line.
  2. The engine is 8-cylinder V-shaped. This type of engine was made of aluminum and featured a self-adjusting cooling system, continuous injection and digital electronics. Thanks to powerful engine(286 hp), the car reached a speed of 100 km/h in almost 7 seconds. The engine is equipped with a proprietary Double Vanos valve timing mechanism, which made it possible to squeeze maximum speed out of the power plant at any speed. The engine was equipped with a 5-speed gearbox. This engine was considered the most interesting.
  3. Diesel engine 6-cylinder.

Later, new, more powerful engines appeared. German mechanics have created an innovative torque distribution system: when a wheel slips, the program slows it down and gives more revolutions to other wheels. This and much more determines the car’s high crossover capability. The rear axle has special elastic elements based on pneumatics. Even under high load, the electronics maintain the ground clearance at the proper level.

The brake system of the X5 "BMW E53" also has its own highlights. Enlarged brake discs with control program emergency stop allow you to significantly increase braking force. The above system comes into effect when the brake pedal is fully depressed. The crossover also has speed retention settings of about 11 km/h when descending from an inclined plane. As for the basic versions, a manual transmission was available, and an automatic transmission was available as an option. "BMW X5 E53" in expensive trim levels was immediately equipped with an automatic transmission.

Despite such abundance positive qualities, the car was far from a real SUV. The frame was soon changed to a supporting body, which, naturally, affected all the qualities of the car. The Germans are very interested in automation, although it often prevents the driver from solving this or that problem. For example, when driving up a mountain or getting into a rut, the electronics do not allow you to switch to downshift. And on sharp turns, the gas pedal freezes, and you can only bring the car to the desired radius using the steering wheel.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the technical part

Obeying the laws of the market, since 2003 the Germans began modernizing the E53 model:

  1. The all-wheel drive has been completely redone.
  2. The xDrive system was improved as much as possible: the electronics began to analyze the condition of the road surface, the steepness of turns, compare the received data with the driving mode and independently regulate the torque between the axles.
  3. Lateral roll and shock absorption are automatically adjusted.
  4. Parking has become easier thanks to the presence of two cameras.
  5. The brakes received a system for removing moisture from the discs.
  6. The system is so smart that any sudden removal of the foot from the gas pedal is interpreted by it as preparation for emergency braking.

The V-shaped gasoline engine received a Valvetronic system, which regulates valve travel, as well as smooth intake control. As a result, the engine power reached 320 hp. s., and acceleration to the cherished 100 km was reduced to 7 seconds. The maximum speed, depending on the tires, was 210-240 km/h. Another useful change: the 5-speed gearbox was replaced with a 6-speed one.

The modernized crossover received a new diesel engine with a capacity of 218 hp. With. and torque up to 500 Nm. With this engine, even the most unpredictable obstacles were completely conquered by the BMW X5 E53. The diesel engine could reach a speed of 210 km/h and accelerated to 100 km in 8.3 seconds.

"BMW X5 E53": restyling of the interior and exterior

The body shape was also slightly changed, and the hood received a new, more expressive radiator grille. The already respectable car began to look even more interesting. However, due to the plastic body kit, the car seemed a little softer. The bumpers and headlights have also undergone minor modifications. The length of the body has increased by 20 cm, which is quite a lot. The lengthening made it possible to add a third row of seats and make the Intrusive excesses removed from the cabin and slightly modified dashboard.

The restyled body has achieved almost ideal aerodynamic results. Its Cx coefficient is 0.33, which is very good for a crossover.

Paying for luxury

All of the above qualities, dressed in a chic shell, could well be the reason for the X5 E53 to be included in the ranks of luxury cars, which does not always entail pleasant consequences. For example, spare parts for this car cost a lot of money. However, given the Bavarian quality, repairing a BMW X5 E53 was an extremely rare task for the owner. But what really amazes is the appetite of the crossover. With 10 liters per 100 km stated in the passport, it consumes almost twice as much. Another 5 liters - and the consumption will be comparable to the legendary Hummer.

Achievements

Be that as it may, in 2002 in Australia this model was recognized as the best all-wheel drive car. And 3 years later she got into Top Gear and thereby confirmed her title. It was by analogy with this car that such famous cars as Porsche Cayenne, Volkswagen Touareg And

In 2007 history BMW cars The X5 E53 ended, and was replaced by the new X5 with the E70 index.

The car with the index E53 is an all-wheel drive crossover of the first generation of the X5 model, which began production in 1999. "First copy", as is customary in automotive world, was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show, marking the beginning of a completely new approach to car models in this class. Many car owners positioned it as an SUV, although the creators of the BMW X5 E53 themselves called this car a crossover with cross-country ability and sports class functions.

The Germans, when creating the “first X-5”, did not hide the fact that they wanted to “outdo” the Range Rover, resulting in an equally powerful and respectable, but more modernized car. Initially, the X5 was produced at its own plant located in Bavaria. Then, after BMW took over the Rover plant, production of cars for the American market began. Thus, this SAV class vehicle simultaneously explored two territories: Europe and America.

The German auto giant BMW, in principle, could not release a bad car. Praised German quality, the precision of the development of electronics and all mechanisms of the new line were designed to raise the German brand to new level. The BMW X5 (E53) was designed for travel on any road surface and light off-road conditions; moreover, this car was assigned the “sports car” class.

The first generation car received a platform in the form of a supporting structure body. It was “stuffed” with electronics, equipped with all-wheel drive, increased clearance and independent suspension.
Also, the X5 E53 was distinguished by a spacious and stylish interior without unnecessary nuances, at the same time, a luxurious finish that corresponded to the price of the car. Classic BMW wood and Bavarian leather inserts, adjustable steering wheel, orthopedic seats, high seating position, climate control, electric sunroof, large trunk, designed to carry decent loads - all this was included as standard.

In many ways, the Germans managed to catch up and overtake the Range Rover: the car’s solid, impressive exterior, alloy wheels, and two-leaf rear door were clearly “licked” from the SUV. From there, some useful functions came to the X5 E53, for example, adjusting and maintaining speed on a descent. This is where the resemblance to the legendary car ended.

Technical specifications. The first generation of this crossover has undergone several changes, as appearance, and designs. It looks like German manufacturer I constantly wanted to bring the car to perfection, regardless of the results already achieved. Initially, the BMW X5 entered the market in three versions:

  • with a gasoline in-line engine (6 cylinders);
  • with a V-shaped aluminum engine (8 cylinders) with a powerful, improved self-adjusting cooling system, continuous injection mode, digital electronics; Thanks to the powerful engine, acceleration to the first hundred was just over 7 seconds. Engine power reached 286 hp. The engine was equipped with a proprietary Double Vanos gas distribution mechanism, which allows the engine to give maximum performance at any speed. BMW received a Steptronic hydromechanical transmission with 5 steps;
  • with diesel power unit(6 cylinders).

Then new, much more powerful engine options appeared.

The first generation of the car was equipped with independent suspension and all-wheel drive with electronic torque distribution. The mechanics designed the system very cleverly: when a wheel slips, it “slows down” it and at the same time gives more torque to the other wheels. This explains the car's good cross-country ability.
The rear axle was equipped with specialized elastic elements based on pneumatics. The electronics make it possible to maintain the clearance height even under significant influence of static load forces.
The brake system also has significant differences from " simple cars" Significantly larger brake discs plus an emergency brake control system allow for increased braking force. The system is activated when the pedal is fully pressed. This SUV also has additional system maintaining a speed of around 11 km/h when leaving an inclined plane.

The BMW X5 E53 is literally “stuffed” with electronic systems:

  • Dynamic Stability – control of dynamic stabilization;
  • Cornering Brake – control of braking on steep turns;
  • Dynamic Brake – control of braking dynamics;
  • Automatic Stability – directional stability control.

Has all this made it possible to turn a crossover into an SUV? According to experts, probably not. BMW X5 E53, receiving many good qualities, still did not reach the level of a “full-fledged all-terrain vehicle”. The designers planned a load-bearing body instead of a frame, which naturally affected all the qualities of the car. The Germans also “went too far” with the automatic transmission: when entering a hill or getting into a rut, it does not allow you to switch to a lower gear, and when making sharp turns, the car can be brought to the desired course only by the steering wheel; in this case, the gas pedal “falls into a stupor.”

Since 2003, obeying the laws of the market, the Germans have carried out a significant restyling of the E53.

  • The all-wheel drive has been completely redesigned. New system xDrive has been improved beyond belief: the electronics have “learned” to analyze in real time the condition of the road surface, the sharpness of turns and, by comparing the data with the driving mode, independently redistribute torque between the axles. As a result, lateral roll and shock absorption are automatically adjusted.
  • V-shaped gasoline engine equipped with a Valvetronic system designed to regulate valve travel, and in addition a smooth intake system was added. As a result, the permissible power of the car reached 320 hp, and the start to 100 km per hour was reduced to just 7 seconds. The maximum speed of a car directly depends on the characteristics of the tires and ranges from 210 to 240 km/h. On the new car, the 5-speed gearbox was replaced with a 6-speed one.
  • The crossover received a new diesel engine with a power of 218 hp, a torque of up to 500 Nm, and the acceleration speed to hundreds was 8.3 s. The maximum speed beyond which it will not allow you to “run away” electronic system, – 210 km/h. With this engine, the E53 decently overcame even the most unpredictable obstacles.
  • The body was improved by changing the shape and design of the hood, which received a chic radiator grille. The already impressive car began to look even more respectable. The designers worked on the bumper and headlights. The dimensions of the car have changed somewhat. Thus, the length of the body has increased by 20 cm, which, in general, is significant. Accordingly, the volume of the cabin has increased, making it possible to make the X5 seven-seater, with the presence of a third row. Some “extra” bells and whistles were removed from the interior and the dashboard was replaced. The appearance of the car has become somewhat softer due to the plastic body kit.
  • In terms of aerodynamic performance, the X5 E53 has reached good performance, coefficient Cx is 0.33, which is practically perfect result. New sensors and systems have been added to the electronics. So, the big innovation was electronic mechanism Active Steering: with its help, maneuvering when parking does not require the steering wheel. Parking is simplified by the presence of two video cameras.
  • The brakes were equipped with a system for removing moisture from the discs. The system is so smart that it reacts to a sudden removal of the driver’s foot from the gas. She takes this movement as a sign of preparation for emergency braking.

All this, dressed in a chic shell, fully corresponds to the “Luxe” class, which brings with it quite serious “problems” for the owners. Incredibly expensive spare parts, as well as crazy fuel consumption (with the stated 10 liters, during the test drive the consumption was twice the norm) - this is the price for the “chic” and elegance of the car, which automatically transfers the owner to the category of successful businessmen.

Be that as it may, it was the BMW X5 that was recognized in 2002 as the best all-wheel drive car in Australia. And 3 years later he confirmed this title by getting into Top Gear. Others followed BMW's example big brands, resulting in the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport, and Volkswagen Touareg.

The X5 model from BMW is a full-fledged SUV with many years of of this car originates in 1999, and it is still produced, which is a source of pride for BMW engineers and designers. Bodies, their numbering and features - read about all this in this article.

First generation

In 1999, the first crossover in the history of BMW was presented at the Detroit Auto Show. A new series and a new experience, because the Bavarians had not previously produced all-wheel drive crossovers. The car received the index X5. Letters indicate the presence of permanent all-wheel drive. The number 5 indicates that the crossover platform belongs to the fifth series of BMW. The bodies, of course, were modified to suit the off-road class, but the platform and wheelbase remained unchanged.

The E53 body was a breakthrough for the company. It was produced in the USA. To Europe this model They were brought only in 2000. In 2003, this crossover was updated through a facelift. This event was timed to coincide with the presentation of the youngest crossover in the series - X3. Changes affected the front of the car. Under the hood of the car there are 3 petrol and one diesel units to choose from. At the end of 2006, the first generation was removed from the BMW assembly line. Over such a long period of production, the bodies were outdated and needed changes.

Second generation

The new version of the crossover has undergone external and technical changes, but has not changed dramatically. The car was produced for 6 years - until 2013. In 2010, the Bavarians carried out a restyling. The front and rear optics, bumpers and fenders were changed.

There have also been changes under the hood. The crossover received new gasoline units and a redesigned diesel engine. Changes also affected the transmission - the gearbox was replaced with an 8-speed instead of a 6-speed. In 2013, production of the second generation was completed.

Third generation

The first rumors about the new F15 body appeared during the production of the second generation in 2012. As for the new BMW X5 body, the changes again were not entirely revolutionary. Again bumpers, optics and small elements. Although the platform has been changed, the entire range of engines is turbocharged. It includes 4 petrol and 2 diesel units. All modifications are equipped exclusively with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

In November 2013, applications for the new BMW X5 (index “F15”) began in Russia. The third generation of the famous “X5” was officially presented during the Frankfurt Motor Show, and its production was established in the USA, where, as in Europe, sales of the new product began a little earlier. Initially, only three modifications of the American-assembled crossover were offered in Russia, but in May 2014 several more versions were added to them, the production of which had already been launched at the Avtotor plant in Kaliningrad.

Connoisseurs of the classic brutal forms of the X5 may be upset by the new look of the crossover - after all, the car has acquired some “feminine” features, more dynamic side lines, front and rear design with design elements from current passenger models BMW, as well as sports air intakes at the edges of the front bumper (driving oncoming flows into the space under the wings). On the other hand, the appearance of the BMW X5 2014-2015 model year has become more modern and closer to the new design standards of the Bavarian automaker.

In terms of dimensions, there were no very noticeable changes: the length extended by 32 mm to 4886 mm, the wheelbase remained at 2933 mm, the width increased by 5 mm and is now 1938 mm, and the height is 1762 mm, which is 13 mm lower than its predecessor . Due to the greater use of aluminum and other lightweight materials, the weight of the car decreased by an average of 90 kg, and the aerodynamic drag coefficient of the body improved from 0.33 to 0.31. Both parameters significantly affected the dynamic characteristics of the crossover, but more on that later.

Interior BMW crossover The X5 has changed much more noticeably. The new architecture of the front panel brings the F15 closer to the modern style of the German automaker, while simultaneously improving ergonomics. The quality of the materials used to decorate the interior has become even better, but the fit of some elements, in particular the glove compartment lid, leaves much to be desired. Visibility from the driver's seat has hardly changed, since the glazing scheme has remained virtually unchanged, but the side mirrors have become slightly smaller, which has increased the volume of blind spots.

The interior layout is still five-seater, with the possibility of ordering the installation of two more third-row seats for passengers whose height is not higher than 1.5 meters. The level of equipment has become noticeably better: electrically adjustable front seats with memory settings are already available in the base, there is a 10.25-inch display on the center console, and for an additional fee you can install dual-zone climate control and an entertainment system with two monitors for rear passengers.

The useful trunk space in the third generation of the crossover is noticeably larger than that of its predecessor. In its standard state, the trunk holds 650 liters, but due to the rear row of seats folding in a 40:20:40 ratio, it can be increased to 1870 liters, not counting the niche under the floor. The top flap of the trunk lid is equipped with an electric drive, controlled both from a button in the cabin and from the key fob.

Technical specifications. Initially, the engine line for the 3rd generation BMW X5 offered only three power plant options, but after the launch of production in Kaliningrad, three more engines were added to it, which significantly expanded the choice options.

  • The basic version of the xDrive25d received under the hood an inline 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbodiesel with direct injection and a 16-valve timing belt, which is capable of producing up to 218 hp. power at 4400 rpm and provide up to 450 Nm of torque in the range from 1500 to 2500 rpm. With the younger engine, the X5 will be able to make a starting dash from 0 to 100 km/h in an acceptable 8.2 seconds, while the upper speed limit is limited to 220 km/h. As for fuel consumption, the xDrive25d modification consumes about 5.9 liters of fuel on average.
  • The Germans equipped the xDrive30d with an in-line diesel engine N57 D30 with six cylinders with a volume of 2993 cm³ and an output of 249 hp. at 4000 rpm. The engine is no longer new, it has proven itself, but has undergone serious modernization. In particular, the injection pressure was increased (from 1600 to 1800 bar), the engine weight was reduced and the operation of almost all electronic controls was reconfigured. We also note that the diesel engine is equipped with a new variable geometry turbocharger, third-generation battery injection and Bosch piezoelectric injectors. The engine torque has been increased to 560 Nm at 1500 – 3000 rpm, which will allow acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.9 seconds, while the upper speed limit will be 230 km/h. According to the manufacturer's calculations, intermediate level The fuel consumption of this engine is at around 6.2 liters.
  • The same diesel engine, but with a triple turbocharging system (N57S), will decorate the engine compartment of the xDriveM50d modification. In this case, the maximum power is about 381 hp. at 4000 – 4400 rpm, and the peak torque occurs at around 740 Nm in the range from 2000 to 3000 rpm. Such characteristics will provide the crossover with impressive traction, allowing it to make a starting dash from 0 to 100 km/h in an almost class-record 5.3 seconds, but at the same time they will require at least 6.7 liters of fuel for every 100 km of travel.
  • Between the two engines described above is another diesel modification - xDrive40d, which received a 6-cylinder 3.0-liter power unit with a power of 313 hp, developed at 4400 rpm. Like previous engines, this engine is equipped with direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The peak torque of the unit is 630 Nm and is maintained in the range of 1500 – 2500 rpm, which allows the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds or reach 236 km/h maximum speed, spending about 6.4 liters of fuel in the combined cycle.

There will also be gasoline engines in Russia, but only two:

  • The role of the base unit will be played by the unit intended for modification of the xDrive35i. It has 6 cylinders with a displacement of 3.0 liters (2979 cm³), a 24-valve timing belt, direct fuel injection and a turbocharging system. The maximum power of the junior gasoline engine is 306 hp, developed at 5800 rpm, and the peak torque falls at 400 Nm, maintained in the range from 1200 to 5000 rpm. The xDrive35i modification is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds or reaching a maximum speed of 235 km/h, while consuming about 8.5 liters of gasoline of a grade no lower than AI-95.
  • The N63B44 petrol engine with 8 V-shaped cylinders and an improved Twin Turbo dual turbocharging system is designed for the X5 xDrive50i modification, produced only in the USA. Working volume of this engine is 4395 cm³, and is equipped with a system direct injection fuel, air-water intercooler, Valvetronic continuously variable valve control system and Twin Scroll turbochargers. The gasoline engine is capable of producing up to 450 hp. power at 5500 rpm and 650 Nm of torque at 2000 - 4500 rpm, while spending about 10.4 liters of fuel per 100 km. Regarding dynamic characteristics, then with this power unit the crossover is capable of accelerating to a maximum of 250 km/h, while spending no more than 5.0 seconds on the “starting jerk”.

All available engines fully comply with the Euro-6 environmental standard, and in the “Eco Pro” mode they can save up to 20% of fuel due to a “cunning” technological solution: at speeds in the range of 50-160 km/h, when the gas pedal is fully released, the gearbox automatically turns on neutral, transferring the crossover to coasting. The manufacturer promises about another 5% savings due to the “smart” connection with navigation system, which, knowing the route configuration, will regularly prompt the driver when it is necessary to slow down so that he does not have to resort to braking before turning.

An 8-speed gearbox was selected as the gearbox for all three engines. automatic transmission ZF8HP, which first appeared in 2008 on the BMW 760Li sedan. The “Automatic” was seriously modified, rewriting the control program, reducing its weight and reducing losses due to friction of parts by 4%.

According to the developers, the BMW X5 is the founder of the SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) class: sports cars for active recreation, and therefore, to support the corresponding image, driving tests are carried out in cities that previously hosted the Olympics: Atlanta in 1999 (E53), Athens in 2006 year (E70), well, the F15 was “tested” in Vancouver.

In terms of driving performance on paved roads, the crossover has added virtually nothing, but the vehicle’s off-road capability has noticeably decreased. This is due to the short suspension travel and reduced height ground clearance(from 222 mm to 209 mm), which is why on large bumps or holes you can quite easily get caught on the bottom. The crossover is still equipped with the xDrive permanent all-wheel drive system, based on a multi-plate clutch with electronically controlled in the front wheel drive (on rear axle there is 60% thrust). Among the changes made, we highlight weight loss transfer case, which also received new settings.

The design of the crossover chassis remains the same: an independent double-wishbone suspension system is used at the front, and a multi-link design is installed at the rear in the basic version and air suspension in the top equipment versions. There were no changes at all: both suspensions had slightly changed geometry, the shock absorbers were retuned, and most components were lightened by increasing the share of aluminum.
All wheels of the third generation are equipped with ventilated discs brake mechanisms, A steering complemented by an electromechanical amplifier.

Options and prices. The manufacturer included 18-inch alloy wheels in the basic equipment of the BMW X5 (F15) of the younger modification xDrive25d. rims, bi-xenon headlights, all-round parking sensors, rear view camera, safety steering column, extended power accessories, dynamic cruise control, ABS systems, DSC, DBC and HDC, central locking with an emergency sensor, leather interior, dual-zone climate control, multimedia system, heated front seats, electrically adjustable and with memory settings, ISOFIX fastenings, solar glazing, electric trunk lid and a number of other useful little things.

Starting price for xDrive25d version Russian assembly is 3,415,000 rubles. The X5 xDrive30d modification is offered at a price starting from 4,395,000 rubles. The xDrive40d version is priced at 5,040,000 rubles, while noticeably less equipped versions of the American-built xDrive40d can still be ordered at prices starting from 3,464,000 rubles. The xDrive M50d crossovers, which will not be produced in Russia, are offered by dealers for a minimum of 4,338,000 rubles. The most affordable BMW variant X5 s gasoline engine in the form of the xDrive50i modification, also imported from overseas, will cost 3,838,000 so far, but the equipment of this crossover will be an order of magnitude lower than in the Russian-assembled xDrive35i version, which the Germans valued at 4,375,000 rubles.
