Renault Sandero Stepway or Volkswagen Polo: comparison of inexpensive Europeans. Which is better to choose: Volkswagen Polo or Renault Sandero Stepway Options and prices

The first thing that comes to mind when you see Renault Sandero Stepway 2014 - “yes, this is the new Logan hatchback, only raised.”

There are at least two inaccuracies in this phrase. In order to understand this, we need to remember the history of the Sandero model. Logan in a hatchback body was not planned in the Renault model range, and Sandero was originally conceived as separate model, just built on the Logan chassis. So the first Sandero was not like the Logans of the same generation.

The situation changed with the update of both cars. Following the general trend of unification of body and internal components, these cars have become very similar to each other:

The Stepway prefix for Sandero appeared after Renault management decided to modify this car with increased ground clearance and the presence of a certain amount of off-road body kit all around.

The drivetrain, engines and interior remain unchanged. And so, we are testing the new Renault Sandero Stepway

on the roads of Greece - in the city of Athens and its surroundings. The roads here are good, but the organizers of the test drive included several uneven sections in the route, plus we ourselves drove off the asphalt where we saw interesting off-road conditions. About off-roading a little lower, and about organizing a test drive I will write a separate post. Let's return to appearance. As I already noted, from the front the new Sandero Stepway is almost indistinguishable from new Logan

, which we test drove in March in Montenegro. But, upon closer inspection, we notice two inserts of unpainted plastic and a black “skirt” at the bottom of the front bumper. Even lower, the edge of the proprietary underbody and crankcase protection is visible.

At the rear, design elements common to Logan are also visible, for example, a headlight unit of almost the same shape and texture.

In all other respects, it is more correct to compare this car with the previous Sandero Stepway. They took the original Sandero, installed 16-diameter wheels, further increased the ground clearance by installing other shock absorbers and springs, screwed on a plastic body kit all around, aluminum protection on the bottom, installed roof rails and here it is, a new car. It would be wrong to call him an SUV, because all-wheel drive off-road. And that, for the most part, is due to the declared ground clearance of 195 mm. Solid! My colleague, Kostya otrip, showed logical curiosity and reached under the car with a tape measure. Measurements showed real ground clearance 185 mm on an unloaded vehicle.

Before moving on to the interior, I want to note the original sixteen-inch wheel disks. Don't be fooled by them appearance- is not alloy wheels, and most of them are stamped. To verify this, you need to remove the cap, which will reveal the stamped essence of the disc. This arrangement was new to me, but a survey of friends on social networks revealed that the same principle in wheel design had already been used by a couple of other manufacturers.

Without a key you cannot access fuel neck. And after you open the lid, the question will arise, where to put it along with the key? UPDATE: The comments suggest that for this there is a barely noticeable hook under the fuel type sticker, you just need to pull the key out of the cover so that it doesn’t get dragged away:

The new Logans also did not have a plug covering the hood hinges:

We sit down in the cabin and finally stop seeing the difference with Logan. All the same. The same glossy and easily soiled plastic around the audio system, the same illogical arrangement of some buttons, the same MediaNav multimedia system, where navigation must be started every time the engine is started, and this is done with three button presses.

The interior without climate control looks simpler:

Although no, I did find one striking difference. This is the dial dashboard with hellish scales and long risks that definitely do not add to the readability of the readings. Strange design decision. I hope they will rid the car of this misunderstanding in the next modifications in production.

You are unlikely to complain about the trunk and its volume. It's not bad for this class of car. Unless the loading height is too high, and the fifth door does not open on its own after pressing the button, you must lift it by hand:

The next step is to evaluate the car in motion. There’s also a little déjà vu here: the same indecently long-travel clutch pedal, which “takes” only at the very end, and the same slightly heavier steering wheel than most modern cars. The operation of the gearbox does not cause any complaints, except that the rear one is not always able to be engaged the first time. And that same suspension: elastic, energy-intensive, which smooths out all the unevenness on the asphalt and which is difficult to overcome on small off-road potholes even on high speed. The latter is the most pleasing thing about this car. There is one interesting note regarding the elasticity of the suspension. On a car with a mileage of 6,000 kilometers, the suspension seemed softer to us than on another with a mileage of 800 kilometers. This was especially noticeable when passing speed bumps.

About both engines, eight-valve 82 hp. and a 16-valve engine with a capacity of 102 hp, I can say that they are good and quite sufficient for comfortable movement in the city and on the highway. Well, except that long overtakings need to be planned more carefully and a large reserve should be provided. I didn’t feel any lack of power while driving uphill, if I dropped the gear down in time. Noise insulation is good, the engine is clearly audible only after 3000 rpm, and sounds from the wheel area will not bother you much even on dirt roads.

Please note that for now I am not saying anything about the role of high ground clearance. And his role in Russia is important. Get to the dacha without rubbing your bottom on the uneven ground, or climb onto the curb/curb for illegal parking on the sidewalk... you never know. And the fact that the Sandero Stepway does not have all-wheel drive is nonsense. Simpler device, cheaper service. And judge for yourself, why does the market need another SUV? Renault already has a Duster. And the Sandero Stepway is a good old hatchback that allows you to climb further than usual. And in some places, in terms of cross-country ability, the low weight of the car can help.

So, for 534,000 rubles you get new version a car that is already appreciated by Russian drivers for its reliability and pleasant suspension, in addition to its high ground clearance and off-road body kit. For the "Multimedia" package (audio system with navigation and bluetooth plus steering column joystick) you will need to pay an additional 14,500 rubles, for heating windshield- 6.500. It’s better to look at everything else in the Renault configurator, there are a lot of options there.
If we summarize the pros and cons of the car, then the noticed shortcomings are not so critical. You can get used to the illogical arrangement of control buttons and the long clutch pedal, and adjusting the backrest angle in the form of a lever is not so often needed. Well, except that the fifth door, which must be lifted manually, will be annoying. Surely the craftsmen from the forums will then tell you how to eliminate this inconvenience, for example, by installing more powerful shock absorbers. But the advantages of the car are heavy. This is an inexpensive compact city hatchback with ground clearance similar to SUVs, and in this it is, so far, unique. In long-term operation, it will be beneficial that this is a popular car that has much in common with Logan, that is, there should be no problems with spare parts and service. In general, there will definitely be good demand for it.

If you are interested in watching and listening to the Renault Sandero Stepway on video, you can watch the video of Anton Vorotnikov, who was with us in Greece, and his opinion about this car. There are also video inserts from a quadcopter with the light hand of Dima dimabalakirev:
And I will also have posts about the test drive itself and warm Greece in December!

What is better Renault Sandero Stepway or Volkswagen Polo? Compare Sandero ... Sedan. Transmission type. Manual transmission 5. Manual transmission 5. Drive type, Front (FF) ...

Which is better: Volkswagen Polo or Renault Sandero Stepway? A reasoned answer would be desirable. | Topic author: Dima

Victoria  For the first car: take the stepway!
You will beat, and you will beat) parts and repairs are cheaper!
And Zoya’s ground clearance is higher, so you can jump around yards and curbs!
On a polo, the sills will wear out and the suspension is not so durable.
And so, the polo is more beautiful and the interior materials are better.

Yuri  You can, of course, still have the Cruze, Solaris and Kia Leonid, but if you take it from Foltz and Renault, I would take the Polo - after all, the spare parts are German, and it doesn’t look bad

Boris  The car has many characteristics.
For example: price, fuel consumption, cost of ownership, trunk capacity, maximum speed, comfortable ride...
Indicators can be divided into objective and subjective.
We don't know WHICH of these indicators are the most important for YOU. Therefore it is impossible to answer your question.

Georgy Renault Sandero is made in Moscow at the former AZLK plant. better, respectively, Volks.

Tamara  but Foltz is made in Kaluga, so what? and there are almost no German military units there! Foltz is more expensive, but the quality is no better. Renault has better service and the company's warranty policy. and beyond the stepway

Andrey  If you live where more or less good roads then polo, Diana. Well, if there is a problem with the roads, a Renault is better.
P.S. If you don’t want to get disappointed from the steppe, go with a manual one; polo is better with an automatic one.

Irina   atext" itemprop="text">Maybe we should wait a little skoda rapid? This is an improved Polo, plus a choice of engines. Well, Skoda is usually cheaper than Volkswagen, both initially upon purchase and in the total cost of ownership. Sandero Stepway has specific ergonomics. The windows are on the center panel, the seat heating button is God knows where, the horn is not in its usual place.

What is better Renault Sandero or Volkswagen Polo? Compare Sandero and Polo. ...Sedan. Transmission type. Manual transmission 5. Manual transmission 5. Drive type, Front (FF) ...

When purchasing a car, a potential buyer is usually faced with the problem of choosing between models and manufacturers. For example, which is better - Volkswagen Polo or Renault Logan, it is not so easy to determine. They have similar characteristics and almost the same prices, but still the German pedant and the French romantic differ, if only in that both are produced in Russia, but the first in Kaluga, and the second in Togliatti.

Body

The Polo is 44 mm longer than the Logan and its length is 4390 mm. The wheelbase is 110 mm shorter – 2553 mm. But Logan is 34 mm wider (1733) and 50 mm taller (1517). But the Polo’s ground clearance is 8 mm higher and amounts to 163 mm, which is a significant advantage, especially for those who often have to park in urban environments. The likelihood of damaging the bumper is much lower.

As for the style and design of cars, this is a matter of everyone’s taste, but the latest model of German designers has become similar to its older respectable brothers, perhaps that’s why it looks a little more solid. The car was also equipped LED backlight front and rear license plates.

Interior

Both cars, in accordance with the price, have an ascetic interior trimmed with inexpensive plastic. There are no frills in the interior, but only the necessary equipment and accessories. If we compare the most expensive configurations to see which car is better, then Volkswagen does not have the notorious Samsung media center with a 7-inch screen and a GPS navigator function.

On the other hand, even the basic models of the German sedan are equipped with electric windows on all doors, while Renault has only the front ones. Polo has pockets on the backs of the front seats and a cup holder for the driver and front passenger, but Logan does not have this in any version.

Volkswagen's steering column is adjustable in height and reach, while Renault's is only adjustable in height.

The trunk volume of the Logan sedan is 510 liters versus 460 for the Polo, that is, 10% more. This is a significant advantage.

Engine

Both cars can be equipped with one of two 1.6-liter engines with eight or sixteen valves. The Volkswagen pair is somewhat more powerful: 90 and 110 hp. With. Renault has 82 and 102 strength. Accordingly, the maximum speed developed by the cars is different, and Polo is ahead in this sense. It can reach speeds, depending on engine power, of 178 and 191 km/h, while Logan in two versions develops no more than 172 km/h.

In terms of efficiency, Polo wins significantly. By cycle:

  • urban, Polo/Logan at 100 km – 7.7/9.8
  • mixed, Polo/Logan at 100 km – 5.7/7.2
  • suburban Polo/Logan for 100 km – 4.5/5.8

Information is given based on the characteristics of less powerful engines.

The engines accelerate cars to the first hundred in 10.4/11.2 (Polo) and 10.7/11.9 (Logan) seconds.

French engines are made of cast iron, and German ones are made of aluminum. Therefore, we can safely assume that the resource of the Renault unit is much higher than that of Volkswagen. But on the other hand, the pride of German developers is the almost eternal timing chain. Logan has a timing belt drive, which is less reliable.

Transmission

Since 2015, the Renault sedan has been equipped with one of three gearboxes:

  • Automatic transmission 4;
  • MCP 5;
  • RCP 5.

The Volkswagen sedan has a slightly smaller choice of transmissions and can be equipped with a five-level manual or six-level automatic transmission.

The six-speed automatic transmission was designed to enhance the car's dynamics. And it also gave excellent results in terms of efficiency.

For example, the increase in fuel consumption when using an automatic instead of a manual is only 2% for Volkswagen, and 14% for Renault!

But Renault offers an inexpensive robotic box, and Volkswagen cannot do anything against such a proposal.

Chassis

Both sedans have conceptually identical suspensions. The front spring is independent according to the MacPferson scheme and the rear is semi-independent with springs. Combined with high ground clearance Volkswagen suspension shows excellent results in places where Renault will not pass.

The braking system is also not much different in cars. Double circuit with amplifier. Rear drum brakes, front disc brakes.

The steering of the Polo sedan is slightly better than that of the Logan. Both machines use a rack and pinion steering system, but all Volkswagen models Polo's power steering uses an electric drive, while Renault's uses a mechanical drive from the power unit. This partly explains the efficiency of the German car, due to the reduced load on the engine.

What can be concluded

You can choose a favorite between these models, taking into account the positive and negative aspects that will be most acceptable in future uses of the car. Perhaps in comfort, suspension quality and other details better than Logan, but in terms of efficiency the Polo is far ahead.

It's no secret that pragmatic Europeans have long preferred practical hatchbacks, and have recently switched. In Russia, these trends are much less pronounced: our compatriots are more favorable towards sedans. We do not set ourselves the goal of finding out the reasons for this love for more streamlined cars, but we are interested in finding out the practical side of the issue. And as candidates, we selected budget versions of a hatchback with some off-road inclinations (Renault Sandero Stepway) and a sedan (Volkswagen Polo), which are assembled in our country.

Features of the models

Essentially, the Sandero Stepway is absolutely the same subcompact hatchback, affordable and familiar to our car enthusiasts, which was simply raised a little above the ground in order to increase its ability to overcome minor road troubles, giving the car features characteristic of SUVs.

This unusual “mutant” first appeared in public in 2008 and was intended exclusively for the South American market, but a year later the five-door appeared in Europe, and in 2010 it became available in our country.

The efforts of the French engineers were not in vain - the car really became closer to crossovers, moving away from its parent category. And it sold out well, since its cost, if it increased, was only slightly. As it turned out, turning a hatch into a cross-country vehicle is not so difficult - just increase the ground clearance (in this case to 19.5 cm) and attach an off-road body kit.

As for the other dimensions of the car, the length of the car increased to 4.08 m, the height - to 1.62 m, the width remained the same - 1.76 cm. Of course, the curb weight of the Stepway also increased - to 1.127 tons. heavy modification, and the load capacity increased to 0.445 tons.

With a raised center of mass, this could not have a positive effect on driving characteristics, but it is obvious that this was not the main goal.

If we talk about the Volkswagen Polo, then this is also a typical representative of the subclass of inexpensive subcompact sedan cars (according to the classification accepted in the Old World - segment B). It is interesting that, trying to revive the production of the “people’s” car, German engineers were initially aimed at Russian market- in any case, already the first generation had an adaptation package.

One way or another, the Russian version of the three-volume car made its debut here at the same time as the French one, in 2010, and definitely became one of the favorites of the most diverse automotive public. This allowed him to break into the foreign car scene and is there at the top of his category.

Sandero Stepway compared to Polo Sedan popular to a much lesser extent, and although the level of its sales is gradually rising, it is not at a fast enough pace to be a worthy competitor in the short term. Let's try to find out why.

Appearance

It is clear that we are not even talking about the remote similarity of the exteriors. The cars represent absolutely different types bodies, although they are classmates. In this regard, the Sandero Stepway can no longer be called a typical hatchback - the signs of a crossover are very clearly visible in it. And yet it does not live up to the SUV: it lacks volume and aggressive appearance. Polo deservedly occupies the niche of compact cars, at least in appearance.

So, what makes Stepway stand out in terms of exterior? We note the presence of a large branded windshield and a flat hood with a sharp curve at the front. The Polo has a rather large windshield, and the hood is flatter and has side recesses that go into the head optics unit.

The front of the Frenchman was equipped with a traditional Renault curved radiator grille, adding LED headlights large size. Polo has a completely straight false radiator grille and head optics similar in shape and size. The Frenchman's bumper, especially its lower part, is typically crossover, with a characteristic trapezoid-shaped air intake fog lights relatively large size. The German's straight lines predominate here, too, and the air intake is very narrow and neat, turning into elongated foglights.

The sidewall of the Stepway resembles both a typical hatch and a crossover, and such uncertainty gives the car’s appearance the very charisma that the sedan so lacks. The Renault's windows are small, which spoils the impression a little, but the wheel arches are very large, creating another memorable disproportion.

With the Polo, everything here is trivial, there’s nothing to catch the eye on, but the proportions, including the curve of the roof, are perfectly observed.

The situation is similar at the rear. The Sandero's body is typical for an SUV, while the Polo is also no different from a classic compact sedan.

Since it is very difficult to compare the incomparable, we are inclined to draw, although the appearance of the Renault Sandero Stepway looks very interesting and unusual.

Interior

Analyzing the internal contents of both cars, you come to the conclusion that both French and German car designers put a lot of effort into making the driver and passengers feel comfortable. It cannot be said that these are masterpieces of design art, but no dissonance is felt in the cabin. Moreover, in many details the interior decoration of Stepway and Polo has a lot general details and damn.

For example, the layout of the instrument panel is almost the same oval crescent. In both cars, the center console is located at a similar angle to the driver. The Renault's steering wheel is a little simpler and less functional.

Although both the sedan and the hatch-cross belong to the same class, the Polo is noticeably more spacious, but the German is inferior to the Sandero in terms of the quality of finishing materials. In terms of ergonomics, it seems that there are no competitors at all, at least in class B. All controls are located in accessible places, the quality of the fitting of the parts is not satisfactory. Stepway has a problem with this: the gaps immediately make themselves felt, and some of the keys are clearly located not where one would expect. But if you get used to it, then this problem is completely removed as unnecessary. Moreover, as a result of the 2015 modernization, the French corrected many minor defects, and an order of magnitude fewer new ones appeared.

More Volkswagen salon memorable thanks to the combined trim of the front seats; newfangled linings appeared on the sills, the practicality of which is highly questionable.

However, not everything is perfect here either - the cup holders are too small, dishes like a half-liter bottle will not fit there. However, the interior of the Polo cannot be called flashy, but this is not its advantage.

Engines and transmissions

The Renault Sandero Stepway has two units in its engine line, both with a volume of 1.6 liters.

The youngest is an in-line four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine, which quite expectedly complies with the latest fifth-generation European environmental standard. It runs on AI-95 gasoline and is equipped with distributed injection and an eight-valve timing belt.

The power of this engine is 82 “horses”, which is achieved at a crankshaft speed of about 5 thousand per minute. Maximum torque is 134 Nm, which is achieved at 2800 rpm. The engine is mated to a five-speed gearbox manual transmission.

The basic one is a four-cylinder unit with the same design features, but with a sixteen-valve timing belt, while there are two options for boosting the engine with reconfigured distributed injection - 102-horsepower, which is considered the main one, and 113-horsepower. The first has a maximum torque of 146 Nm, which is recorded at 3800 rpm. This motor is combined with a manual transmission. So is the classic automatic, while its more powerful brother has a CVT instead of an automatic transmission.

Volkswagen Polo is also equipped with three power units, also three engines, but there is no CVT here - only automatic and manual.

The main power unit of the Polo is an in-line 1.6-liter four, equipped with two camshafts and distributed injection. The power of such a motor is relatively small - 90 hp. sec., a peak torque of 155 Nm is achieved at an engine crankshaft speed of 3800 rpm. There is also a version of this engine boosted to 110 “horses”.

Top power unit a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine is considered, allowing 125 hp to be squeezed out at 6 thousand rpm. With. Peak torque – 200 Nm at 4 thousand rpm.

Of particular note is the classic hydromechanical automatic. His work does not deserve any censure - the car quickly takes off and reacts quite obediently to the driver’s actions. Of course, with aggressive behavior, the six-speed transmission still slows down a little, and since the engine power is not enough, rapid overtaking must be carefully planned and calculated. In addition to switching to manual mode, there is also a sport option. But for the sake of fairness, we note that this name does not correspond to the essence of the regime. Note also that with a junior motor automatic transmission not supplied.

As we see, Volkswagen comparison Polo and Renault Sandero Stepway in terms of engines are not in favor of the Frenchman.

Dynamics, fuel consumption

The 82-horsepower engine of the Steppes paired with a five-speed manual transmission does not allow the car to accelerate to speeds of more than 165 km/h - a mediocre figure for these times, and the acceleration time to hundreds is not impressive - 12.4 seconds. It cannot be said that: the average is 7.3 liters per hundred kilometers. This is a lot for such a baby.

Its 102-horsepower brother, coupled with the same manual transmission, can reach speeds of about 170 km/h and reach hundreds in 11.2 seconds. Despite the greater power, it turned out to be unexpectedly less voracious, consuming 7.2 liters of AI-95 in mixed mode.

The Polo's main 1.6-liter 90-horsepower unit accelerates to 100 km/h in 11.2 seconds, while its top speed is 179 km/h - frankly average performance. But this engine is economical: when driving around the city it consumes 7.7 liters of gasoline, on the highway - 4.5 liters, on average - 5.7 liters. If you are not a fan of a high-speed driving style, and you have to limit fuel costs, then a Polo with such an engine will be just right.

With a 1.4-liter turbocharged engine and a manual transmission, the sedan weighs 1223 kg. accelerates to “first car” in 9.0 seconds, and the “maximum speed” in this combination falls slightly short of the round figure - 198 km/h. But gasoline consumption in this combination is surprisingly low: 7.4 liters per 100 km. in busy city mode, 5.0 liters on the highway and 5.7 liters when driving in mixed mode.

Handling and maneuverability

This is where the fun begins. Both cars were designed taking into account deliveries to Russia, that is, they were adapted for our roads. But the French did a much better adaptation. If you leave aside the ground clearance, which is similar to almost an SUV, then you will very quickly feel the difference.

The Sandero Stepway handles most bumps with exceptional ease, including speed bumps. The suspension also works extremely softly, without annoying sounds or bumps. For the Volkswagen Polo, such behavior can only be dreamed of.

The German has a much stiffer suspension compared to the Stepway. However, for this small car she's not the worst. He works out his skills with a solid “B”.

What makes a French car look so much better? This is a completely independent front suspension on springs with fairly stiff shock absorbers, but, obviously, this is not enough for the achieved level of comfort. It's a matter of very precise tuning of all suspension components, something the French are very skilled at.

In the Polo, many irregularities are felt, noise is also present - the car, although adapted, clearly does not like bad roads. Both cars keep the track well, but the Renault has stronger lateral rolls when cornering due to its increased center of mass. But not critical.

In short, handling is one of the few indicators in which a comparison between the Volkswagen Polo and Renault Sandero Stepway is not in favor of the former.

Options and prices

The minimum configuration of Sandero Stepway is Life 2018, costing 710 thousand rubles. For cars 2019 model year you will have to pay an additional 18 thousand, having received the same poor equipment: halogen head optics, tinted windows, running lights, a pair of front airbags, front electric windows, heated driver/front passenger seats, adjustable heated mirrors, an immobilizer, central locking and a full-size spare wheel. Not rich. Optionally, you can equip the car with a modern multimedia system with navigation and a seven-inch touch screen.

The top-end configuration of Life City 2019 costs 912 thousand, and it adds side airbags, ABS/ESP, climate control, full power accessories, a multimedia system with navigation, and rear parking sensors.

Polo has a little more configurations, while the basic Conceptline costs 671 thousand and includes two frontal privacy controls, ABS, power windows on all doors, audio preparation and central locking. The top-end Comfortline modification with a manual transmission and a 110-horsepower engine costs 846 thousand and is equipped with air conditioning, a car radio and a number of other options.

Which car is preferable

Our review is largely of a purely educational nature, since we understand that the selected cars the target audience completely different. But there are exceptions to any rule, so a certain percentage of potential buyers will probably be interested in all available in this price category options. So, Sandero is good, but Polo is better. And it’s not a matter of body type - young people approach this issue without prejudice. In almost all indicators, the sedan demonstrates where there is a clear and where there is a minimal advantage. Taken together we get , economical and roomy car, well equipped and costing the same. True, if you often travel outside the city, this is worth considering, but the off-road properties of the Stepway are limited by the increased ground clearance, and this is clearly not enough.

Purchasing a car for any buyer is an involuntary encounter with a well-known problem: how to choose best option from many brands and their model ranges? For example, what to choose: Volkswagen Polo sedan or Renault Logan? Leaning towards a particular car from this pair can be very problematic. Therefore, the relevant question is which is actually better: Renault Logan or Volkswagen sedan? Both models have similar characteristics, cost about the same amount, but still have some differences. These cars are assembled at the facilities of Russian enterprises: the pedantic German is produced in Kaluga, and the romantic Frenchman is produced in Togliatti. To understand which is better, a comparison should be made.

Body differences

The length parameter of the Volkswagen Polo sedan is 44 mm longer and is characterized by a value of 4390 mm.
If we compare, the wheelbase of the German is shorter than that of the Renault Logan by 100 mm and equals 2553 mm. But the Frenchman is a little wider, but by an insignificant 34 mm (the total width of the car is 1733 mm).

In addition, Renault Logan will be 50 mm higher, and full meaning its height is 1517 mm.

The ground clearance of both models is considerable, although the German competitor has it by 8 mm more and reaches 163 mm. This aspect is an important advantage, which is undoubtedly evident when parking in urban infrastructure, when the risk of damage to the bumper is much lower. Therefore, based on this parameter, it is impossible to say unequivocally which is better; comparisons need to be made based on other parameters.
If we touch on style and design, then the individual factor of taste comes to the fore. The advantage of the German was the similarity of the Polo with its more prestigious brothers from the model series of Volkswagen. The car really began to look more solid, and is also equipped with LEDs that serve as backlight for the front and rear license plates. In this regard, when compared with its competitors, the German car takes the lead.

Comparison of interiors

According to their cost level, both models are equipped with an ascetic interior, which is characterized by finishing using inexpensive materials. The interior is devoid of frills for the sake of ergonomic distribution of the necessary equipment and accessories. If we compare more expensive (in terms of equipment) versions, then the Volkswagen Polo sedan will not please you with the multimedia center from Samsung, which has a 7-inch diagonal screen and GPS navigation.

Even the basic versions of Polo will please electric drives window lifters in all doors, while Renault Logan is equipped with such a drive only in the front doors.

The backs of the front seats of the German have convenient pockets. There are two cup holders between the driver and passenger. The Frenchman does not have these options in all interior versions.

The steering column of the Volkswagen Polo sedan is adjusted in two planes (height and reach), while in the Renault Logan the steering column position can be adjusted only in height.

If you compare the French sedan, it has a spacious luggage compartment, the volume of which is impressive - 510 liters. Volkswagen is much more modest in this discipline - only 460 liters or 10% less.

Motor competition

Let's continue the comparison. Both models are equipped with engines of similar volume – 1.6-liter “fours”, each having two versions (8 and 16 valves).

German units are somewhat more powerful and produce 90 and 110 “horses” versus 82 and 102 “horses”, respectively. In view of this, the speed capabilities of the Volkswagen Polo sedan are preferable: 178 and 191 km/h versus 172 km/h (both versions of Renault engines).

In terms of efficiency, Polo has a reasonable lead. We compare over 100 km of travel in terms of traffic cycles according to the Polo/Logan scheme:

  • in urban – 7.7/9.8;
  • for mixed – 5.7/7.2;
  • for suburban – 4.5/5.8

The information is given based on the parameters that are least achievable powerful versions motors.

The dynamic capabilities of cars when starting up to the first hundred are as follows (in seconds):

  • 10.4 and 11.2 (for Polo);
  • 10.7 and 11.9 (for Logan).

The French motor blocks are made of cast iron, while the German units are made of aluminum alloy. This gives us the right to assume that the service life of Renault Logan units is better, since it is significantly superior to Volkswagen engines in this discipline.
The timing drive on Volkswagen Polo sedan engines is implemented through a chain drive, which is more practical in comparison with Renault Logan engines, in which this mechanism rotates using a belt.

About transmissions

For Logan, produced since 2015, three versions of boxes are available:

  • 4-speed automatic;
  • five-speed manual;
  • robotic (five stages).

For Volkswagen, the choice of transmission units is more modest:

  • five-speed manual;
  • six-level machine.

A six-speed automatic transmission unit is positioned separately, designed to increase the dynamic capabilities of the car, which in addition made it possible to achieve significant efficiency. This is confirmed by the numbers: when changing a manual to an automatic, fuel consumption in Logan increases by 14%, and in the Volkswagen Polo sedan - by only 2%!
In turn, Renault offers customers an advantageous package - an 82-horsepower unit paired with an inexpensive robotic transmission. The Volkswagen Polo sedan cannot boast of such a configuration option.

Nuances of the chassis, steering and suspension

Both rivals are equipped with conceptually identical suspensions and based on this parameter it is difficult to choose which is better. The front suspension is spring independent on MacPferson struts, and at the rear there is a traditional torsion beam on springs. More high ground clearance allows Volkswagen to show decent results on light off-road, which will be somewhat difficult for Renault Logan.

The brakes also have similar design elements. The system is dual-circuit with amplification. There are disc mechanisms at the front and drum mechanisms at the rear.

The steering mechanism of the German is better implemented. Both models use a rack. All Volkswagen modifications Polo sedan is equipped with an electric boost system. Logan uses a traditional hydraulic mechanism rotated by a belt.

The implementation of the electrical principle of operation of the amplifier allows the German to achieve better fuel efficiency.

We draw a conclusion

Many realized that the Renault Logan or Volkswagen sedan was better than the presented cars. Both models have their own advantages, but are not without disadvantages. If Renault Logan will please you with its energy-intensive suspension and smooth ride, then Volkswagen's trump card is fuel efficiency.
