Pajero sport and prado off-road. Choosing Mitsubishi Pajero Sport I with mileage: reliable and unreliable engines and transmissions Mitsubishi offered a new vision of comfort

4 / 5 ( 4 votes)

The automotive market today casts its own rules and requires continuous development automotive companies so as not to lose their fans. This also applies to the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport SUV. The company does not back down, and recently released a new 3rd generation, which many have been waiting for. The entire range of Mitsubishi.

Car history

Pajero Sport received its position in the Mitsubishi model list between Pajero and Pajero Pinin. The name "Sport" indicates that the car was designed using the significant experience that the company has accumulated in rally competitions.

The model was oriented to a greater extent for people leading an active lifestyle. This 5-door SUV with an all-wheel drive system is perfectly adapted for off-road and stands out for its excellent cross-country ability. Appearance eloquently testifies to the sporting nature of the Japanese. The front end has dynamic characteristics: an aggressive bumper, a radiator grille and front fog lamps.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport

All this makes it clear that the model is really prestigious. The light curves of the lines are noticeable on the body, which emphasize the flat surface of the Pajero Sport and allow you to create a sense of harmony between the SUV and nature. Just like a real classic jeep should be.

Looking at the car, there is confidence: there is a high ground clearance, a masculine appearance and a simple, but pleasant body. The article describes the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport price, provides photos and descriptions of the features of all 3 families of famous jeeps.

1st generation (1996-2010)

The Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 1 SUV of the family was shown not so long ago - in 1997, as a public alternative to the Pajero model. The car was also called Challenger, Montero Sport, Nativa and Shogun Sport. They decided to create a vehicle on a reduced L200 platform.

The standard Easy Select gearbox has a rigid front axle connection. In the United States and Japan, models were sold with a Super Select box, where there was a permanent all-wheel drive system.

The SUV of the first family has undergone several improvements and restylings. After 2000, instead of the rear suspension on springs, they began to use a spring. Suspension is not really killed, which has always inspired respect. Confidence was given by the Easy Select all-wheel drive system.

To the territory of Russia Mitsubishi Pajero Sport was supplied with two versions: with a 2.5-liter turbodiesel engine, issuing 85 Horse power and a gasoline V-shaped six-cylinder unit, which received a volume of 3.0 liters.

In addition, the car had 3.5-liter petrol "sixes" under the hood, as well as turbodiesels with a volume of 2.8 / 3.2 liters. They were synchronized with mechanical box gear shifting. Max speed was at 150 km/h. After restyling, the jeep accelerated to 175 kilometers per hour.

Updated design in 2005

In addition to the 5-speed manual transmission, a 4-speed automatic was installed. Selling the Model 1 family to Japanese consumers ended with the onset of 2003. North America ended sales in 2004, and the Jeep was sold in other markets until 2008. A total of 630,000 vehicles were produced.

They decided to carry out the first restyling because of the rear suspension, which has its drawbacks, and the too ascetic exterior of the Pajero Sport.

The debut "Sport" almost did not get an attractive appearance and style. Beautiful appearance appeared years later, with the first restyling. At that time, buyers liked this rugged off-road machine, which did not give reason to doubt its abilities.

The first family of jeeps had a body that made it possible to create a fairly spacious interior of the car, while allocating the necessary space for the luggage compartment. The wheelbase was 2,725 millimeters, and the ride height was 215 mm.

It is clear that the Japanese vehicle was not easy - 1,825 kilograms. On top of that, the top trims weighed 70kg more.

It is clear that inside the level of comfort on the first "Sport" is far from ideal. Salon did not surprise or impress. The interior is outdated, everything is extremely simple, but comfortable. Even then, the company's employees equipped the driver and passengers with sufficient care.

The interior equipment has 3-point seat belts with pretensioners even in the standard version, airbags, a nice acoustic installation with four or six speakers, air conditioning and the option of heating the front seats, as well as a block of additional devices that have found a place above the dashboard.

2nd generation (2008-2015)

The second version of the jeep appeared in 2008. If we compare the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2 with the previous generation, then the SUV has become larger, more comfortable and more expensive. The vehicle was not sold in the United States, Europe, or Japan.

The main plant for the production of an SUV was the Thai enterprise of the company, and jeeps were assembled in 4 countries: Brazil, Venezuela, India and Bangladesh. From 2013 to 2015 cars for Russian buyers assembled in Kaluga, and GAZ was engaged in the frames.

It is noteworthy that the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, produced for Russia, already had a rear axle locking system as standard. But the system of exchange rate stability was installed only on top-end configurations. Models that went to European countries and Belarus decided to equip them with a stability control system even in the basic configuration.

The second family was created on the frame base of the Mitsubishi L200 pickup truck of the 4th division. The buyer received a permanent Super Select all-wheel drive system, where the transfer of torque to front axle and blocked the center and rear axle differential.

The Russian car market had as standard a 2.5-liter 4D56U turbodiesel that developed 178 horsepower and worked together with a manual or automatic transmission. In addition, a V-shaped six-cylinder three-liter gasoline engine was installed under the hood, which produced 220-222 “horses”.

Synchronized it with an automatic transmission. In 2011, they already stopped selling a version with a 3.2-liter diesel engine that develops 200 horsepower. It was paired with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.

Experts note the mechanical variation as more reliable. The clutch goes out more than 100,000 kilometers, provided that the vehicle is used correctly. All cars that were delivered to the Russian Federation had a 5-seater saloon and an all-wheel drive system, however, some markets offered a 7-seater saloon and a rear-wheel drive version.

Two gasoline engines of 2.4 4M41 and V6 3.5 6V31, with a capacity of 160 and 210 “horses”, respectively, as well as one turbocharged 2.5-liter diesel engine, designed for 136 horsepower, did not come to the Russian market. The 4M41 turbodiesel was called by many experts a fairly reliable power plant.

Instead of a timing belt, they installed a good old chain that quietly works out a 200,000th run. Reading Mitsubishi Pajero Sport reviews, you understand that the jeep has served and continues to serve many drivers faithfully, so you should pay tribute to Japanese specialists for the work done.

The disadvantages of the second family include difficulties with the turbine, which strongly "eats" oil and makes noise after 10,000 - 20,000 kilometers. But all these shortcomings were eliminated by the manufacturer under warranty. Defects include separation of the rubber element of the crankshaft pulley.

This is not significant if the defect is initially opened in the early stages, but on cars with high mileage, a large pulley play can be observed, which leads to problems with the engine. No matter how experts praised the diesel installation, the gasoline six-cylinder power unit looks more reliable.

Updated 2nd generation body

TO weak points such motors include intake manifold rattling at low and medium speeds. The gas distribution mechanism of the gas engine has been improved - a belt was installed instead of the chain.

Since the beginning of 2013, the model has been slightly corrected, in particular, its exterior, and in the next (2014) year, the car had an improved front panel inside and a new audio system. The production of the 2nd generation jeep ceased in 2016, and a total of about 400,000 copies were produced.

3rd generation (2015-present)

The most recent release for today is the 3rd Mitsubishi Pajero Sport family, introduced in mid-2015. The jeep is well marketed, and production is mostly done by Thailand.

Exterior

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 turned out to be a stylish, daring and more representative vehicle than earlier models. In part, this was achieved with the help of swept-back head optics, which is available for the first time on this Japanese in an LED layout and a proprietary X-shape, a more massive rear overhang and a belt line rising up closer to the aft area of the car.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 was blown in a wind tunnel, as a result of which it was possible to improve its own data by 15 percent. In general, looking at the front of the car, it can be confused with the Outlander, which also received the "X-face".

It must be admitted that a lot was said about this stylistic decision, there were even rumors that it was "inspiration" from the work of Steve Mattin. Although it is possible to distinguish a car: the “lip” installed at the bottom is more massive, the fog lights of a different look, even the “grill” is different - everything seemed to turn out to be large and evil.

The novelty has “swinging” wheel arches, embossed sidewalls, a daring window sill line, as well as original lighting equipment. The appearance of the novelty received the character of the advanced concept Dynamic Shield. You understand that the designer salon did not stint on unique solutions.

To heighten the perception of the Jeep's exterior, the design team lavishly topped the bodywork with chrome overlays. But an experienced eye will notice that the vehicle has saved the frame structure. The height level is impressive, but access to the car is simplified by footrests, which are securely fixed. They are a little narrow, but do not interfere with patency.

The back, according to many, looks rather controversial. One gets the feeling that the designers invited the “guys” who had been creating Citroen since the beginning of the 2000s. Three-quarters of the aft area is occupied by "flowing" lights, very similar to the eccentric French C6 business sedan. It looks a little strange, but such a design attracts.

The lanterns placed on the stern, which flow down to the bumper, look very interesting in the evening, as they have LED streams. Bumpers have faceted ultrasonic radar eyes.

Two of them, mounted on the sides of the rear bumper, scan blind spots - a feature that appeared for the first time on a Mitsubishi car. The remaining 4 monitor obstacles during reverse maneuvers.

Interior

Earlier, from the owners of Pajero Sport of past generations and auto journalists, there were repeated complaints about the supposedly poor salon, which was even compared with the mournful hut of a ruined samurai. Applied to the salon such unpleasant adjectives as: hard, unfriendly, creaky and boring.

However, now the interior has turned out to be new, supplemented with useful innovations and improved in many ways. A conveniently located footboard helps to get into the jeep. Sitting behind the wheel of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017, you feel like you are in a normal modern vehicle.

Many will love the colorful two-tone finish that creates a cozy feel. The seats began to be covered with high-quality leather and were able to interestingly collect it into folds. Everyone noticed that the quality of the plastic used and the level of fit of parts has improved significantly.

The steering wheel is now adjustable for reach. The Super Select transmission is adjusted using a washer, not a lever, as was the case in previous versions. At the same time, the mechanical drive was gone from the hand brake. Instead, a miniature lever blocks the pads.

Multifunction steering wheel

The seven-inch display does not have flawless graphics, and at maximum brightness, the driver cannot always see everything he needs. However, one should not immediately demand perfection from the novelty. Generally speaking, the interior design is strikingly different from the 2008 samples.

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport has steep curves in the center console and door handles. There's the charismatic lines of the multi-function steering wheel, the small transmission mode dial, and the nice grip of the latest 8-speed automatic.

Seven inch display

Top equipment contains a color screen that supports touch input. It refers to the Mitsubishi Connect system, which now works with voice control, a navigation system. It's nice that you can also synchronize your smartphone with a useful system.

Unusually, the color display slides out interestingly. Some at first thought that they would see a CD drive behind it, but SD card slots found their places there, which once again proves the modernity of the Japanese SUV.

The instrument panel is informative and has a white scale. A screen placed between the engine speed dial and the speed gauge displays information about the 4WD mode being used.

The list of functions has been increased - now the car comes with a surround view system, an electric parking brake, separate climate control, a heated steering wheel and a second row of seats. Rear passengers can get a 9-inch color DVD player display mounted in the roof panel.

The seats are well profiled, but the side support rollers on the front seats are widely spaced. Unfortunately, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2016 did not come out more spacious than its predecessor. There is still a little lack of space above the head, the back of the rear seats has only slightly become higher.

But do not forget that the "frame" body rigidity has a drawback - a high floor. But there is plenty of free space in the legs, and the backrest can be adjusted in terms of the angle of inclination. Three adults can easily sit down and feel comfortable. Moreover, due to the “flat” profile of the rear sofa during turns, three passengers will even feel better - thanks to the shoulders of the neighbors, no one will slide to the side.

In the case when a couple of people are sitting behind, then there is an option to fold the armrest and use it as a “stop”. Do not underestimate it, because during an active drive and off-road movement, it perfectly helps to keep. Pleased with improved noise isolation. All body panels are finished with absorbent materials, so you can carry on a conversation in an undertone.

It is possible to fold the armrest and use it as a "stop"

The luggage compartment of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2017 received a flat floor. If you look quickly, you get the feeling of a gigantic space. In fact, this is so - 700 liters with a tail, almost 2 baths will fit. Of course, the luggage compartment is not the same as in the Ford Edge, but it will be enough for travel.

If necessary, it is possible to remove the rear rows and increase the capacity of the trunk by two and a half times. If there is no desire to remove passenger seats, you can buy a trailer and forget about a small trunk.

By the way, the maximum permitted mass of a towed trailer for the third generation of a Japanese SUV is 3.1 tons. The company is proud of this, because direct competitors in the face of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (which does not pull more than two and a half tons) and (up to 2,000 kg) lose according to these indicators.

But the trailer can carry not only a couple of motorcycles or ATVs, but a real buggy, a boat. In addition, it is possible to travel by taking a motorhome with you.

Specifications

power unit

Two engines are coming to the Russian market. This is a 6-cylinder V-shaped "aspirated", having a volume of 3.0 liters and running on gasoline. Its output is an impressive 209 horsepower, capable of accelerating a two-ton jeep to the first hundred kilometers in 11.7 seconds.

The maximum speed in this case is 182 km / h. The power unit also consumes a lot - in city driving, the appetite will be about 14.5 liters for every 100 km of road. Having left the city, you can achieve a consumption of 8.9 liters per 100 kilometers. According to the company, mixed mode is 10.9 liters.

Diesel engine with a volume of 2.4 liters

In addition to it, a new diesel engine is provided. If earlier the unit had a volume of 2.5 liters, and developed 178 “horses”, now the unit has a volume of 2.4 liters and develops 181 horsepower.

The diesel has a turbine with variable geometry and a mechanism for changing the valve timing. Engine torque has increased by 30 Nm, and fuel economy has increased by 15% - the increase is felt. Unfortunately missing preheater engine and interior.

Transmission

Mitsubishi Pajero Sport received a Super Select II all-wheel drive system and an Aisin eight-speed automatic transmission. In 4H mode, the transmission begins to split the torque in a 60/40 ratio. Instead of the clutch, which itself is blocked in the central differential, they began to use the Torsen differential.

As before, the owner has the right to set the drive system modes: 2N (torque is transmitted only to the rear wheels), 4N (all-wheel drive system with a free differential), 4HLC (center differential is blocked) and 4LLc (blocking and lowering a number of speeds).

Interestingly, the reduction factor was increased from 1.4 to 2.5 in the direction of improving cross-country ability. Buyers will be pleasantly surprised that Japanese company Mitsubishi has finally installed a drive mode selection system (mud / snow, gravel or sand), as well as a hill descent assistance system.

All this made it possible to simplify and make driving comfortable, mainly for drivers who do not have off-road driving experience.

The 2016 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport R&D department pioneered an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Suspension

Serious work was carried out on the suspension settings. The usual suspension with double wishbones remained in front, and a continuous axle with double trailing arms. It is important that the elastic parts were adjusted softer (which is very well felt), the frame was made reinforced.

The suspension is not too soft, which is very good, because many cars get "seasick" off-road. The Japanese managed to find a middle ground by adjusting the suspension in such a way that the driver and passengers did not sway to the point of nausea, but they did not feel like firewood in a cart either.

Steering

The steering mechanism has a rack and pinion type design and a hydraulic booster. It was worked out, so the car became more responsive to steering turns. Now the steering wheel has 3.8 turns from lock to lock.

Management has become simpler and more interesting. Steering gear received a damper, so there are almost no shocks and vibrations transmitted to the steering wheel.

Brake system

On all wheels, as before, there are disc brakes with a ventilation system. Working brake system with various electronic assistants such as ABS and EBD.

Security

The ultrasonic sensor system mentioned above emits a buzzer sound and can interfere with the driver! The option is called UMS, and its job is to prevent a collision if the driver forgot to switch the selector from the “R” to “D” area. This happens very often.

In the bustle of the city, when the driver seeks to clear the way for other cars as quickly as possible, he can press the gas pedal, and the car, instead of starting to move forward, drives sharply back. To avoid such problems, the system monitors all the interference that is within a radius of 1.5 meters, and if it finds them, it starts to emit its signal, thereby preventing the SUV from driving sharply back.

The new model has 7 airbags. Two of them were placed in front, opposite the driver and passenger - they help to provide protection against damage to the upper body. To protect the head of the driver and all passengers who sit near the windows, the engineers equipped the jeep with side airbags.

Several pillows were installed near the driver's seat to protect the knees and legs. To control stability, an electronic traction control system was provided. With it, an SUV can be driven quite easily, even if the car is on a slippery road. An active safety system is installed on the jeep in the form of an automatic braking function, monitoring dead zones and all-round cameras.

Summing up

From the very first generation to today Mitsubishi model Pajero Sport is very different. Of course, the unusual appearance of the Japanese SUV immediately catches the eye, but not only this has changed. The company's employees have increased the cross-country ability, build quality, the quality of the elements used, and ergonomics.

In other words, the first and third generations are heaven and earth. Literally everything has been redesigned and improved. It can be seen that the company's management strives not to lose its fans. On the contrary, it is looking for ways to win the respect and love of new motorists.

The question of whether the jeep turned out to be successful can be left for later, because there will always be connoisseurs and critics. As they say: "there are no comrades for the taste and color." But one thing can be seen for sure, the designers sought to highlight their "brainchild" from the flow of cars on the road.

It is worth noting that they managed to do this. Yes, perhaps the model is still far from ideal, but the company is taking the right and decisive steps in the right direction. But there are enough fans of this particular brand, moreover, they use cars of both the 3rd, and 2nd, and 1st generation.

If you look at the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport reviews, then to a greater extent the model is called reliable and passable, and they say about its suspension: “almost indestructible”. But such an assessment had to be earned. I would like to hope that the company will not stop on its development and will continue to produce and update its "real" all-wheel drive cars.

Video review

On the early cars there were in-line four-cylinder engines of the 4G64 series, well known Galant owners and other Mitsubishi cars, but the main engines are still a 3-liter V6 of the 6G72 series with a capacity of 177 hp. from. and diesel 4D56, with a volume of 2.5 liters and power from 99 to 136 liters. from. In regional versions, it was possible to meet larger 6G74 with a volume of 3.5 liters, and diesel 2.8 4M40, and other engines. But cars with them come across extremely rarely.

In the photo: Mitsubishi Pajero Sport "1999–2005

The three-liter V 6 prevailing in our market is really good. Cast iron block, successful design, worked out over the years, and very good traction characteristics. The timing drive is carried out by a belt, but, because the belt is durable and reliable.

The control system is far from perfect, but with minimal investment it can be put in order. Usually, candles, high-voltage wires, ignition modules, lambda sensors and temperature sensors fail - and sometimes the wiring of the engine compartment itself.

Serious damage to the motor can be caused by a malfunction of the cooling system - for example, antifreeze leaks (which are not uncommon) or fan failure due to viscous coupling or electrical problems. The radiators themselves are frankly flimsy, they swell when the pressure in the system rises, and they are easily contaminated in typical urban use.

The tendency to increased oil appetite in age is usually eliminated with better oils and replacement of valve stem seals, which is quite successful. With runs over 250-300 thousand kilometers, the oil appetite progresses up to 0.5 liters per thousand kilometers, but the engine remains operational, and even catalysts can withstand such a regime for a long time.

The main thing is not to miss the oil level, since the crankshaft is very easily damaged at the slightest level fluctuation. We recommend oil with a viscosity of SAE 40 and higher and a mandatory check of the hydraulic lifters and the timing hydraulic tensioner after 200 thousand kilometers. A little more trouble can be caused by a leaky intake manifold. Of course, you need to monitor the condition of the candles and high-voltage wires - misfires lead to early failure of the catalysts, which, in turn, kills the piston group.

The condition of the gaskets on the front cover of the block will also require attention. Leaks quickly kill the timing belt, whose standard resource is about 90 thousand kilometers. Often it is able to pass even 120, but when oiled, it fails very quickly.

Pictured: Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 3.0 V6 AT "2005–08

Unlike gasoline, diesel 4D 56 is not considered particularly reliable. A rather old design, which was successively boosted from 70 to 99 or even 136 hp. from. corny does not withstand the load, despite the overall thoughtfulness and quality of workmanship. The cylinder head and the block crack, the pistons burn out under load, the rocker axles break, and sometimes even the timing belt breaks with low mileage. With quiet operation, the engine can withstand both 300 and 400 thousand kilometers, but one trip at a speed of 120–130 km / h for a couple of hours can lead to cylinder head cracking and excessive pressure in the cooling system.

The injection equipment on Pajero Sport engines does not cause any particular problems: the price of the components is low, the EGR is easily silenced in the event of a malfunction, the nozzles are inexpensive. But all this is in low-forced versions. As for the later European versions with a boost of more than 136 hp. s., then here the fuel equipment is different, and reliability is also lower.

FROM manual gearboxes there are no special problems, except that dual-mass flywheels and clutches are on diesel engines are not particularly reliable. But the automatic transmission of the V4A51 series and its rarer five-speed version on the Montero 3.5 V5A51 can be safely attributed to one of the most successful and resource boxes. Before a run of 200 thousand kilometers, problems are extremely rare, even automatic transmissions with runs over 400 thousand without repair come across.

The main problems of a purely electrical nature are the failure of rotation speed sensors during hard operation, as well as the rare replacement of overdrive planetary gear sets. The resource of the gearbox and gas turbine clutches is about 200 thousand kilometers (twice as much as on modern 6–8-speed automatic transmissions), so, as you can see, the design is perfectly balanced.

On cars for the Asian market, you can also find the Aisin 30-43LE four-speed gearbox, familiar to many from Toyota Land Cruiser of different series. It is no less reliable and even tolerates tough operation a little better. With proper maintenance, it easily overcomes the half-million mark, and on commercial vehicles there are also automatic transmissions with a mileage of a million kilometers.

What to choose?

In the first part of the material, we have already made the reservation that despite the apparent high off-road potential and reliability overestimated by many, it is better to prefer a car that spent most of the time in the city. In this case, the lack of a suitable and reliable diesel engine will not be a problem - the gasoline version will not only be more preferable for the wallet, but also not too compromise for operation. But the price of transmission malfunctions can be quite large, and there are many problems in it.

Pictured: Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 3.0 V6 AT "2005–08

For those who drive mainly around the city, cars with a permanent all-wheel drive transmission are recommended AWD, with which the handling of the Pajero Sport will be more or less passenger - these are mostly "Americans" after 2003 release. True, there is an opinion that the best is a simple part time 4WD, but it is based on the hypothesis of increased consumption fuel at full speed.

It doesn't make sense, but the logic is broken: if you're using a hardwire when you don't have a differential, then a disengaged front axle really saves money. In the case of more “intelligent” AWD and Super Select transmissions, there will no longer be such a critical difference, but four-wheel drive will give you what SUVs buy for: confidence on slippery surfaces and mixed.

Does the option of buying a Pajero Sport appeal to you after all you read?

Sport refers to mid-size SUVs. The original version appeared on the world market in 1996, taking model range The company is an intermediate place between the standard version of the Pajero and the Pajero Io model. The second generation, released 12 years later, was distinguished by an improved design and two diesel units in the mod list. The latest version was introduced in 2015 - it is this one that is being sold now as a 2016-2017 car. model year.

First Pajero Sport

The Mitsubishi Pajero SportI model was created on the basis of the car of the same brand - the second generation Pajero. It differed from its prototype with less efficient motors and a better price. In Japan, the car was sold as the Mitsubishi Challenger, and in North America as the Montero Sport.

Design outside and inside

The first Pajero Sport models could be made in one color or two (respectively, for the basic and top configurations), equipped with foglights and side moldings, 16-inch wheels and a spoiler with a brake light repeater. Some versions also had a curtain in luggage compartment and a net with which luggage was attached. All the necessary instruments were located on the front panel, including an overboard temperature sensor and an electronic compass.

Inside the car, a leather-wrapped steering wheel could be seen. And the rear seats were equipped with a backrest tilt mechanism, thanks to which it was possible to make the trip more comfortable for second-row passengers. Or, if desired, increase the volume of the luggage compartment by 3.5 times. With the rear seats folded out, there is enough space for adult passengers.

SUV characteristics

The most popular power unit for the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 1 was a three-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 170 hp. from. Although buyers could also choose the option with a 2.5-liter diesel engine with a capacity of only 100 hp. from. The advantage of the diesel was the minimum fuel consumption - no more than 10 liters in mixed driving.

The dimensions of the car are quite decent in order to provide enough space in the cabin. And the clearance, even for diesel modifications, is suitable for overcoming real off-road. From this we can conclude that already in the first generation Pajero Sport was still a real off-road model, not an SUV.

First generation kits

Regardless of the modification, the Pajero Sport included airbags, door stiffeners and a four-channel ABS system. More expensive Intense-type configurations were sold only with an automatic transmission and a leather steering wheel. In addition, all versions were only all-wheel drive - moreover, both in the first and in all other generations. Their cost at the time of release was about $ 40-50 thousand, now you can buy Pajero Sport 1996-2008 for 200-600 thousand rubles - depending on the mileage and condition.

Pajero Sport 2

Modern car manufacturers often stop producing unpopular models in favor of newer versions. However, Pajero Sport did not touch all this - its second generation appeared 12 years after the first. The car was produced for 5 years and gained almost the same popularity as the regular Pajero.

Machine Features

The design of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport of the 2nd generation fully met the expectations of fans of this model. Even at first glance, the following features of the SUV are noticeable:

  • sports contours of the body;
  • wide doorway;
  • elements painted in the same color as the body - from bumpers and side moldings to wheel arch extensions;
  • stylish edging "fog";
  • chromed mirror fairings.

The interior of the car also looks stylish, the design of which has changed markedly compared to the previous generation. First of all, the expensive and high-quality materials used for decoration are impressive. In the second - a large screen multimedia system.

Technical specifications

For Mitsubishi Pajero Sport of the second generation, as many as three power units were available:

  • 3-liter gasoline (220 hp);
  • two diesel - with a volume of 2.5 and 3.2 liters and a capacity of 178 and 163 liters. s., respectively.

Cars were equipped with both "mechanics" and "automatic". Depending on the gearbox and engine, the vehicle accelerated from 0 to 100 km / h in 11.7–12.4 seconds and used 7.9 to 12.3 liters of fuel in combined mode. The 3.5-liter gasoline engine, with which the manufacturer was going to equip some configurations of this generation, did not go into mass production.

Car equipment

The 2008 Mitsubishi Sport had only 3 trim levels. The basic version included black door handles, a simplified audio system, and halogen headlamps. A more expensive modification received chrome handles, a multifunctional steering wheel and climate control.

The most expensive Ultimate package was equipped with a 3-liter gasoline engine, power leather seats and an advanced multimedia system. The same version already had xenon lamps in the headlights. A navigation system and an additional sound amplifier were optionally available. Prices for premium modifications 2008-2012 for secondary market start at about 1 million rubles.

Third generation model

The latest version of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport appeared in showrooms in 2015. The financial problems of the automaker did not give him the opportunity to move on to the fourth generation of cars. Therefore, the SUV 2016-2017 model year is now the latest representative of the series.

Exterior and interior

Paying attention to the updated SUV, you can see aggressive head optics and decorative chrome inserts under the headlights. At the same time, the model looks quite dynamic and swift. Although the impression is slightly spoiled by the absence of a spoiler and a large door to the luggage compartment.

Salon Mitsubishi Pajero Sport2016-2017 looks more expensive compared to previous versions - and due to the new multifunctional steering wheel, and thanks to the modern center console. It is worth noting the possibility of comfortable accommodation for passengers and the driver. Although there is a little less knee room in the rear seats, adults sitting here are unlikely to be able to stretch their legs.

Feature Information

Buyers of Pajero Sport 3rd generation have two options for powertrains:

  • 2.4-liter engine with 181 hp. with., which can be equipped with both manual transmission and automatic transmission;
  • A 209-horsepower 3-liter gasoline engine, paired only with an "automatic".

The model of the 2016-2017 model year received good off-road performance due to the high ground clearance and 18-inch wheels. And in the luggage compartment is placed as much cargo as in the second generation models. Some foreign configurations received an increased trunk, but these changes did not affect the models supplied to domestic salons.

Options for the Russian market

The new SUV, which appeared on the market back in 2016, was offered to domestic buyers in 4 basic trim levels - Invite, Intense, Instyle and Ultimate. Variants with different gearboxes were also available for diesel versions.

Opinion of car owners

Users of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport made up a mostly positive opinion about the car, which can be seen from their reviews. Most often, motorists like the size of the luggage compartment and good off-road qualities. There is also a relatively low fuel consumption - especially diesel.

The disadvantages of the model include the lack of adjustment for the reach of the steering wheel. Not everyone is satisfied with the suspension of the car, which remained rigid even in the latest generation of the car. The last one comes out of this shortcoming - a high level of vibration when driving on rough roads.

History of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport from 1996 – 2017 updated: August 31, 2017 by: dimajp

Pajero Sport finally got to Russia with a 2.4 liter turbodiesel. 181 hp (since the beginning of this year, they began to assemble it at the Kaluga plant). A similar Toyota Land Cruiser Prado immediately acted as his rival. The off-road test drive of the Prado and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport made it possible to identify which of these “dinosaurs” is better.

The 2016 Pajero Sport and the Land Cruiser were tested2.8 l. 177 hp, released at the end of 2015.

By cost per Russian market, these are two direct competitors, but in philosophy - they are completely different from each other. Land Cruiser was created on a separate platform of its own, Pajero Sport is the same, although with a different body.

Prices: 3.2 million rubles for Prado and 2.9 million for Pajero Sport. The cost can be considered the same, because when you have to pay more than three million rubles for a car, the difference of 300 thousand no longer plays a special role.

The first impression of the Pajero Sport is disappointing. It was expected that, along with the new engine, it would change its appearance at least from the front. But everything remains the same, and rear lights, which freely flow down somewhere without a bumper, cause an unpleasant aftertaste. In theory, this is a “brutal”, whose task is to cross off-road. But its body, most likely, will be easily crumpled on the first big bump, since it is not protected by anything from behind. You can't do without a real off-road refinement here.

On the other hand, this is just the appearance of a giant with whom we have a special relationship in Russia. Harmonious and calm, he does not give reason to doubt his strength. This can be proved by an interesting observation. Despite the fact that Pajero Sport is completely ready for off-road modification, over the past year such a tuning model has not appeared on the market, although the height of the arches is considerable ground clearance directly allude to. There is also a place for a winch under the front bumper.

As for the Prado, an entire industry is working on its off-road tuning. On the Internet, you can see Prado on large 35-inch wheels. This is an Arctic Truck model with fender flares and other bells and whistles. But this is not the limit, because on our market you can find Prado with 37-inch wheels. However, this is an exception to the rule, because most people prefer standard models.

The base Prado with two batteries is initially well prepared for off-road driving. The hood opens nicely with gas struts. The air intake is set high and hidden in the wing, which makes it possible to move even a deep-water ford.

Diesel Pajero Sport is equally ready for water hammer. IN engine compartment the air intake, like the Prado, is hidden in the right wing. Recall that on the gasoline Pajero Sport, the air intake was brought out only under the edge of the front end. The hood is heavy, it is inconvenient to open, it has no stops.

There are no special changes in the Sport cabin, except for the tachometer, marked up to 4 thousand rpm for the diesel range. The extreme sobriety of the interior is still frowned upon. This salon with cheap plastic is clearly not worth 3 million. If not a good comfortable driver's seat, much better than the previous Pajero Sport, one could put a deuce in the cabin.

The interior of the Prado is also clearly not up to the amount that is asked for it. Everything is simple, quite archaic, but as clear and practical as possible. The seats are harder and not so comfortable, the back profile is thought out extremely uncomfortable.

IN top trim levels available in dark brown trim and aluminum moldings. Prado is thoroughly prepared for the carriage of goods. This has a wagon layout of the luggage compartment and its impressive volume. There was a place for a spare wheel under the bottom.

Asphalt

As many as 8 gears of a classic hydromechanical automatic machine a priori command respect. But is it justified to use a large number of steps. It is noteworthy that such a box got along badly with a gasoline engine. The constant delays and delays of the machine affected the lack of engine thrust. This was especially noticeable on used models. The new turbodiesel engine is clearly more powerful, box delays do not affect it so much.

It is best to use the potential of the engine in the manual mode of the box, because the operation of the machine itself does not inspire confidence. And it is strange that it was not reconfigured for the new diesel Pajero Sport. You can immediately forget about the smoothness of the Pajero Sport. This SUV is tough, especially on uneven road surfaces. However, compared to the gasoline counterpart, diesel is better. It's about 120kg heavier, and it's amazing how a four-cylinder unit can outweigh a six-cylinder petrol unit in this regard.

The increase in mass a priori led to the transformation of springs and shock absorbers. This affected better side for an SUV that used to ride well only off-road. Now the jeep rolls without any problems and on flat tracks.

The petrol car was constantly shaking, driving on asphalt was completely uncomfortable. If earlier there was a desire to leave the car after 100 kilometers, now this is not the case. However, unfortunately, some bugs remain. This is a buildup on a long wave and a painful passage of sharp irregularities (hatches, bulges of the roadway).

Gearbox Prado six-speed. But it is much “smarter” than the Sport machine. She is also not the fastest in the world, there are delays, but they are felt and controlled in advance. Prado is somewhat inferior in terms of playfulness. 11.6 seconds to 100 km / h for the Pajero Sport and 12.7 seconds for the Toyota Prado.

The smoothness of the Prado is impressive. The frame of a large SUV is not felt at all. Asphalt bumps are clicked by Toyota like seeds. Compared to the Pajero Sport, this a car with all your comfort.

Advantages of Prado.

  1. He goes into corners better than competitors. This is especially felt when you transfer from Pajero Sport. The SUV does not fall sideways when cornering, it reacts much more actively to the steering wheel, and in general is perceived as a more lively car.
  2. Another advantage of the Prado on the pavement: it is reinforced concrete on a straight line, which is typical of all Toyotas.

Of the shortcomings.

  1. Prado pedal, on which it is difficult to dose braking. At the first moment, an overpowering effect occurs, as if not one brake booster, but several, is included in the work. Prado stops, nods, and it's unpleasant.
  2. Noise isolation is clearly lame. With every acceleration, the engine seems to crawl out from under the hood. The rumble of a diesel after 1500 rpm does not leave the cabin.

As a result, we can give such a comparative assessment of both SUVs. The new diesel Pajero Sport no longer infuriates after hundreds of kilometers, but any long distances spent driving it are still perceived as a duty or obligation. You want to go somewhere in the Prado, and this is exactly the feeling that a car of the track should give rise to.

off-road

These SUVs are designed to overcome off-road. And the asphalt test can't sum it up. The main thing is how the "dinosaurs" behave on bad roads.

Although the seats on the Prado are not as comfortable as on the Pajero Sport, riding on the waves is much softer. Toyota's suspension works amazingly. Mitsubishi rides a mountain goat, and its running gear raises questions. The classic Pajero is a different matter, the suspension is excellent there, it provoked driving on primers. Alas, everything is not so with the Sport: ship buildup, low energy consumption (especially in the front), constant rebounds of the wheels and separation from the road. If there is a segment of the path with deep potholes, it is almost impossible to calm the Pajero Sport, you have to slow down.

Thus, the Pajero Sport suspension falls into the list of shortcomings. She performed extremely poorly both on asphalt and off-road.

Sand

On the sand, an SUV needs an effective “lower” and powerful engine. Pajero Sport is doing well with this. Can choose auto mode Sand movement, which allows for a little wheel spin (when the car starts to get stuck), but at the same time maintains a sharp and good response from a stop.

On a sandy surface, the automatic transmission must be set to manual mode, since it is easy to get stuck in an automatic one. The engine here should show itself in full force, especially on the slopes. Without locking the center differential, depressurizing the tires and other off-road training, no one will be able to conquer the dunes the first time.

The new turbodiesel base Pajero Sport did not pass the test on heavy sand, at least for the top five. It didn't have enough torque or horsepower. But the electronics performed admirably. She allowed to emerge victorious where the Prado would definitely be stuck.

On the Land Cruiser, you also need to block the center differential and turn on the “lower gear”. From the electronics, you can leave the traction control system, because it is she who performs the functions of wheel locks. Unlike Mitsubishi with its rigid rear derailleur, the Prado has both differentials free.

Unfortunately, Toyota does not have such an "honest" manual automatic transmission mode as on Sport. But you can choose speed limits. For example, if the 2nd is set with a restriction, this means that the Prado will not go above the second gear.

A quick start from a place, but as soon as the tires get stuck in heavy sand, the Prado hopelessly slips. "Samurai" showed much better results.

Prado takes the bull by the horns, where the coating is somewhat harder. Toyota shows off-road miracles, and climbing on shallow, even sand is taken from the first time. Sport - the same test failed. But here the tire profile affected, which on the Land Cruiser turned out to be more suitable for off-road racing.

But the diagonal on the sand was much better than the Prado. Toyota's electronics do not work as efficiently, you can hear the brakes crunching. On Sport, you can move centimeters forward, and eventually defeat a difficult section, connecting to work electronic assistants. Prado advances by millimeters, terribly slips, and an attempt to overcome a difficult section fails.

On the sand, Mitsubishi looks better in terms of potential. "Honest" manual mode, hard rear lock, a larger set of electronic assistants - all this affects the Pajero Sport plus. Alas, the Prado standard tires it is better not to stop on such a surface, but to put pressure on the gas all the time, trying to get away from deep sands.

Dirt

Let's leave the sandy test drive to the Arab sheiks. It is they who are accustomed to off-roading on such a surface. As for our realities, going off-road will mean meeting narrow forest paths filled with mud.

Both Mitsubishi Sport and Toyota Prado are initially ready to conquer the traditional Russian off-road. Both have very strong levers up front and steel pan guards. Considering that there is also a continuous bridge at the back, there is no particular need to be afraid of contact with the ground.

The potential of Sports electronics has affected here as well. On the other hand, Prado also did not lose face, overcoming barriers a little slower than his opponent. And here I must say thanks to the Toyota suspension, which can perfectly take a hit.

But all the advantages of the Pajero Sport transmission (and it is practically the best in the world) are drowned in the shortcomings of its chassis. On any stretch of off-road, unpleasant buildup and bumps are felt.

Video: off-road on Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Toyota Prado

Off-road showed that both cars at a price of under 3 million rubles are not ready for full-fledged off-road. The sport looked a little better, but it was sunk by the suspension. Prado is a real "dinosaur", but only on asphalt.

Among the representatives of the Pajero family, it is the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport that has the most pronounced characteristics of a real SUV. The presentation of the car took place in autumn 1996 in Japan. At that time, this car was called the Challenger. The rest of the world got acquainted with the car only in 1999, then the name Mitsubishi Pajero Sport appeared. Before this acquaintance, Japanese designers decided to make some changes to the car in order to successfully promote their creation on the market. As a result, the shape of the bumpers and grille has changed slightly, in rear suspension the springs were replaced with springs, the outlines of the optics took on a new shape. Since then, its popularity among lovers of an active lifestyle has continued to remain at a high level all the time. Despite this, literally 2 years later, the power frame of the body and interior design were finalized. The next restyling was waiting for the car already in 2005. Gotta give credit Japanese manufacturers who constantly worked on improving the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, regularly adding new details to its image. Motorists, in turn, responded to them in return, maintaining a constant interest in the model. And this applied both to new cars and those presented on the secondary market.

In our country, Pajero Sport is very popular. The reason for this was its high reliability and, as a result, increased demand in the secondary market. Those car owners who wanted to drive an SUV, but did not have enough money, were happy to purchase used cars of this brand. After all, even after several years of use, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport retained a feeling of freshness. new car. All equipment worked like clockwork, the body was resistant to any manifestations of corrosion, the quality of the interior lining created the feeling of a new car.

In general, if we talk about the Pajero family of SUVs, we can note one distinguishing feature that distinguishes them in the SUV market segment. All of them perfectly pass the test on the off-road and with the same confidence feel among the stone jungle of the city. Any Pajero looks sporty and elegant at the same time. How the designers managed to achieve such an effect - one can only guess. Perhaps the reason for this was the relationship with their ancestors, the samurai, for whom excellent physical shape and refined behavior were the norm and lifestyle.

When developing this car, the designers decided to leave the frame that the regular Mitsubishi Pajero lost. This fact, as well as the complete absence of auxiliary electronics, made the SUV extremely reliable and resistant to any test. Mitsubishi Pajero Sport gives the impression of a monolith. This is exactly the car behind the wheel of which you can feel like the driver of a real armored personnel carrier. And if you look from the outside, with what ease the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport overcomes water obstacles, then such a comparison becomes simply obvious.

Despite excellent off-road characteristics Mitsubishi Pajero Sport designers well thought out the level of comfort in its cabin for the driver and passengers. At first glance, the design may seem a little rustic, but the quality of the finishes and materials quickly change opinion in the opposite direction. Unspoiled domestic motorists felt it especially well.

In the center of the dashboard, just above the center console are the temperature gauge, fuel gauge and compass. All of them are located under one visor and have the same round shape. Such a design decision, together with symmetrically located gear levers, gives the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport a resemblance to an aircraft cockpit.

The first generation model was presented in four trim levels: GLX, Inform, Instyle and Intense. At Mitsubishi Pajero, the price of the most expensive of them reached 1 million 100 thousand rubles. For this money, the buyer received a car with a leather interior, halogen headlights, heated rear-view mirrors and front seats, climate control and much more. The safety of the crew was provided by airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as safety bars in the doors.

The anti-lock braking system and the brake force distribution system were ready at any time to come to the rescue of the driver in difficult situations.

Pajero Sport of the first generation was completed gasoline engines volume of 3.0 liters and diesel engines of 2.5 liters. Paired with a gasoline engine, both a mechanical and automatic gearbox could work, while only mechanics were presented with a diesel engine. This SUV lasted for more than ten years - until 2008. Then the manufacturers released the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport of the second generation.

The new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport was strikingly different from its predecessor. He got rid of the former simplicity, in his appearance, interior design and technical equipment, one can feel confidence and experienced experience. In addition, the designers gave its appearance a special gloss that only premium cars could boast of.

The new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport review is logical to start with its appearance. There is no trace left of the rectangular front optics. The driver is greeted by a squint of oblong headlights, their triangular shape is continued by the lines of the new radiator grille. The exterior design of the second generation features swollen shapes and is more modern and stylish than its predecessor. The front of the car is very similar to the Mitsubishi L200 pickup.

In the interior of the new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, there have been the same obvious changes as in its appearance. Dashboard lost its angular forms, all lines became smooth and smooth. On-board computer displays a variety of information: height above sea level, a graph of temperature changes, atmospheric pressure and much more. The now fashionable chrome elements have been added to the decoration, the steering wheel has changed its shape. Instead of four rays, only three remained on it. They are very harmoniously combined with the three-leaf Mitsubishi emblem located in its center. One of the problems that the new SUV inherited from its first-generation predecessor is the low ceiling. Tall people in his cabin will not be very comfortable.

The front seats of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport are well-made and have a wide range of electrical adjustments. Between them is a large armrest. rear seats allow you to adjust the angle of the backrest. The only negative was the almost complete lack of lateral support. In this, the Japanese again repeated the mistake of the previous model. A huge luggage compartment will please even those who like to take everything on a trip, including things that are practically not needed, with their size. And with the rear row of seats folded down in the trunk of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, you can safely pack up for the night when traveling to nature.

The new Mitsubishi Pajero Sport is equipped with petrol and diesel engines the same volume as the previous generation. But their power significantly exceeds the power of their predecessors, and fuel consumption, thanks to the use of the latest developments, has been significantly reduced.

The cost of Mitsubishi Pajero Sport of the new generation starts from 1 million 300 thousand rubles and reaches 1 million 700 thousand rubles, depending on the configuration. And the car has one less. Now the cheapest equipment is called Intense, and the most expensive is Ultimate. At Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, the price, like most cars, depends on the availability of certain options, interior trim, audio systems, etc.

For the Pajero Sport SUV, the description can be done for a very long time, but it still will not convey the picture and sensations that open up to the person driving this car. The feeling of boundless freedom, closely intertwined with the understanding of the power of a controlled monster - this is what motorists appreciate in the sports masterpiece of the Japanese automobile industry, which makes it possible to believe that nothing is impossible.
