The new frame Chinese Hover H3 (Hower H3) is the work of the automakers of the new Stavropol Auto plant. In addition to replacing the letters “V” with “W” in the name, we found other differences from the progenitor Great wall hover, who left our market not so long ago. Under the hood is no longer an atmospheric 128-horsepower weakling, but a two-liter Mitsubishi 4G63S4T with a capacity of 150 forces with a turbocharger. Light rebranding (replacing the letter v with w in the title), definition pricing policy and the start of sales - on our test Hower H3, which has already managed to wind 6500 km on Moscow roads.

Line of frame SUVs of the company Great Wall, (especially the Hover models), gained fame as an imported alternative to the products of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. Affordable price, reliable Japanese filling and more modern appearance than those of direct competitors made it possible to sell up to 18 thousand cars annually.

The conflict with the Russian distributor led to the withdrawal of Great Wall from the domestic market - and then the initiative was seized by the Circassian plant Derways, which already produced bodies for Hovers. We purchased a license from a Chinese manufacturer for the production of current models, entered into an agreement for the supply of components and set up production at the new Stavropol Auto plant.

The future owner of Hower will "anneal" with a licensed supercharged Mitsubishi engine 4G63T. In the second half of the 1990s Lancer evolution with such engines they won the World Rally Championship. The factory engine power is 280 hp. with the recommended 98 gasoline. Although the first updated Hovers with a turbo engine boasted 177 hp, the engine was later limited to 150 “horses”. A powerful and mischievous motor provokes a dynamic ride: a rear-wheel drive (in normal mode) all-terrain vehicle on dry pavement is capable of burning rubber.

Opening the trunk, you pay attention to the large loading height (the price of a full-size spare wheel under the floor) and the trunk lid, which does not allow a person above 180 cm tall to stand up to his full height.

There is enough space in the cabin of the Hover H3. According to the old tradition of frame SUVs, the driver sits almost on the floor. He is relatively comfortable, if you do not take into account that the steering wheel is not adjustable for reach, the chair is not perfect. But those who are behind will not like everything. It seems that there is a place, but the pillow is very low, and the width is good for two, but for three it is a bit cramped. If we compare the dimensions of the Hover H3 cabin with the Patriot, UAZ is preferable, both in terms of the size of the cabin and the trunk.

Although there is a good headroom, the passenger is not cramped in legroom, and in general the rear row of seats is made soundly, the low installation of the rear sofa leads to an uncomfortable fit.

Continuing the mental comparisons of Hower H3 -, we can assume that driving preferences will be given to the Chinese. He has a clearer gear shift 6-speed manual and easy controls, frisky dynamics.

Pleasant little things like updated multimedia: the Hower H3 doesn't feel like you're on the job.

The car is shod in all season tires: a common attribute of frame jeeps. The strong point of this technique is excellent off-road performance and indifference to active and aggressive driving in an urban environment.

Test Hover H3: it's better not to get carried away with speed

The two-liter turbo engine is a real breakthrough. You can still look for such dynamics among all-wheel drive vehicles at a price of about a million, and this is from the standard 150 hp! The engine is quite easily boosted to at least 200 hp, or even higher. Look at the size of the turbocharger under the hood. If all other parts of the transmission hold up, and the motor does not leave the frame, then this unit can be overclocked without major modifications.

By the way, despite the turbocharger, the Hover H3 can be refueled with 92nd gasoline. The on-board computer can only show instantaneous consumption, so our fuel economy data is purely approximate. At quiet ride in the city and on the highway it turns out 10-12 liters. But if you go out on an empty road and let the engine run wild, gasoline disappears from the tank right before your eyes.

A six-speed gearbox is also an unambiguous benefit - at a speed of 100 km / h on the tachometer is only 2000 rpm, the engine does not really strain, and acoustically Hower H3 is noticeably better than UAZ.

However, it is better not to get carried away with speed. Even in the standard version, the Hower H3 calmly puts the speedometer needle at 180 km / h, while the GPS shows 174. However, after 130 km / h, the control of the off-road vehicle becomes like a lottery. In a straight line, it flies relatively stable, but if you happen to brake hard or dodge an obstacle on the road, you need to be extremely careful with this car. Permanent rear-wheel drive, a long steering wheel and a not too comfortable fit are not the best set for such experiments. In part, you can rely on ventilated disc brakes on all wheels - this distinguishes the Chinese from.

We repeat once again: at high speed, in the case of a more complex maneuver than braking to the floor, the entire responsibility for the safety of the car and its inhabitants lies entirely with the driver.

On a slippery road, the Hower H3 can tickle the nerves of even a trained driver. With extreme maneuvers, the frame is no longer perceived as rigid, but, on the contrary, very rolly, and a long steering wheel is not the best help when drifting. Instead of a spectacular skid, the Hower spins its inner rear wheel in a corner.

Strong rolls, huge inertia, traction failures during switching and the lack of a stabilization system do not inspire optimism - on a slippery road, Hower H3 runs the risk of becoming uncontrollable (or even tipping over) and it is better to refrain from sudden maneuvers on a Chinese car.

The Hover H3 test on a snake convinced us of the correctness of the conclusion: active “taxiing” between the cones exhausts the driver physically - a very “long” and uninformative steering wheel has to be turned at large angles, which negatively affects the driving experience.

Testing the Hower H3 on rollers, no revelations were expected. The rear-wheel drive car slid predictably easily off the rollers under the front wheels, after hard connection front wheel drive no problems with the rollers under the rear. True, the absence of a differential will let you down with diagonal hanging. Or not? We drive on two rollers, under the front left and under the rear right wheel, we accelerate, the speed gradually increases ... And the Hover H3, contrary to common sense, passes the test.

After the ski jump, the Hower H3 left me with mixed feelings. On the one hand, it is the most comfortable of those that we experienced in a jump, but ..! ( Watch the video). During landing, the lip of the front bumper almost touches the asphalt. For the crossovers we tested, demolition after jumping a 6-centimeter sponge is the norm. The only one who left her untouched is the Subaru XV. We expected at least the same from the Hower H3. With its fairly stiff suspension and quite decent ground clearance in static. Under the powerful protection of the engine - 205 mm, and the shape of the bumper hints at a very serious off-road potential.

According to the driver, the suspension worked perfectly - Hower H3 landed as if on a feather bed. Quite high-profile wheels and an independent front suspension helped here.

Hower-H3: Speed ​​about 70 km/h, jump from 22 cm - landing is very comfortable for the driver and passengers. True, from the side it will be clearly visible that there is very little left before touching a hard surface.

Test Hover H3: what is the balance

The price list for Hower H3, excluding discounts, starts at 990 thousand rubles. A lot, considering what you can buy for this money in maximum configuration. On average, an equivalently equipped Hower H3 is 1.5 times more expensive than a Patriot, is it worth overpaying?

Structurally, a Chinese car is preferable: it is better assembled and better painted, it has an engine with great potential and greater variability in the choice of equipment. In turn, the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant promises to return a very appropriate diesel engine to the series and flaunts an affordable price, both manufacturers juggle generous discounts.

Without taking into account special offers, the most equipped Hover H3 will cost almost 1.5 million rubles: and even for this price you will not get a stabilization system to curb the temperamental turbo engine - perhaps this is the only thing that prevents us from recommending the Hower H3 for purchase. In other words, the flight is normal, but for the success of the Hover H3, an adequate price and recognition of those who still remember the letter W in his name are clearly not enough.

The car was released in 2009 as a result of a restyling of the first generation Great Wall Hover, which has been produced since 2005. And in July 2010, Irito presented the Hover H3 in Russia for the first time.

The Great Wall Hover H3, with its dimensions of 4,620 x 1,800 x 1,800 mm, belongs to the class of full-size frame SUVs. At the same time, the price for it is at the level of a middle-class passenger car, which distinguishes it favorably from competitors.

The new lighting technology, which received a headlight corrector and a new shape, made the Great Wall Hover H3 more modern and fresh. Ground clearance remained unchanged and is 180 mm. frame structure and modern system all-wheel drive still allow you to successfully storm off-road.

Under the hood of the Hover H3, instead of the previous 2.4-liter engine, there is a 2.0-liter gasoline unit manufactured under license from Mitsubishi. Its power has decreased slightly and is 122 hp. against 130 mils from its predecessor.

But now the motor complies with Euro-4 environmental standards and is distinguished by better efficiency. Max speed SUV at 150 km / h makes it impossible to talk about the sprint qualities of the Great Wall Hover H3, but it is quite sufficient for confident movement on the highway.

On the Russian market, the car is offered in two trim levels - "Lux" and "Super Lux". Both versions have airbags, climate control, full power accessories (including a power sunroof), ABS, 17-inch wheel disks design, heated front seats and other useful little things.

In the basic configuration, the price of the Great Wall Hover H3 was 885,000 rubles, and the cost of an SUV in the Super Lux version reached 899,000 rubles.

In the spring of 2014, sales began in Russia updated crossover Great Wall Hover H3, which received a different design of the front end with a massive grille, modified bumper and retouched optics.

At the same time, prices have risen, and quite significantly. If for a pre-styling car they ask from 869,000 rubles, then an updated one in a similar design costs already 939,000 rubles.

Later, a modification appeared with a 2.0-liter turbo engine with 150 hp. (250 Nm). It also has all-wheel drive and a non-alternative 6-speed manual transmission by default. The cost of such a Great Wall Hover H3 New ranged from 989,000 to 1,029,000 rubles.

Design

SUVs are different. Glamourous, non-glamourous, workhorses, lame horses… The H3 Hover, which has survived the modernization, is more like a workhorse, and the ubiquitous glamour, which, no doubt, has reached Toyota, Honda and even the tank-like Suzuki Jimny, here if passed, it is not too close. The "Chinese" is clearly not drawn to an automobile beauty contest, although, in fairness, it should be noted that it is more or less modern. After all, the designers from the Celestial Empire thought of doing it “like everyone else”, putting a huge, sparkling chrome radiator grille with horizontal slats - in the spirit of American cars. And they didn’t forget to install large expressive headlight eyes, giving the car some resemblance to huge insects from popular adventure films. Foglights, by tradition, are round and hidden in almost rectangular sections.


On the side, the 2014 Hover H3, like the UAZ Patriot, is boring to the point of impossibility. No frills - everything is clear and to the point. Namely - plastic protective pads on the sidewalls, large alloy wheels wheels with a simple pattern, powerful wheel arches and informative exterior mirrors, painted in body color, with integrated “turn signals”. Behind, too, boredom - it is evidenced by nothing special, unremarkable vertical lights and ... And more on the "stern", in principle, there is nothing to catch on. This is a workhorse, and not a miracle of auto design, what to take from it?

Design

The restyled Hover is based on the same well-established platform as the pre-reform model. At the front it has an independent torsion bar suspension, and at the rear - a dependent suspension with four trailing arms with Panhard rod. All parts of the suspension are powerful, due to which the car easily copes with bumps, potholes, cracks and waves on the roads, especially at medium speeds. Brakes - disc (front - ventilated).

Adaptation to Russian conditions

For the harsh road realities of Russia, the car is not bad - fortunately, there is also an all-wheel drive transmission (all-wheel drive control buttons are in a convenient place - at the bottom of the center console), and a 240-mm ground clearance, and fuel tank with a very durable housing, and protection engine compartment, which also covers the checkpoint and the "razdatka" from blows. Hidden in the engine compartment, the new turbo engine is unpretentious in terms of fuel quality and calmly treats the 92nd gasoline, which is so relevant in our country. For operation in the cold season, heated exterior mirrors are provided, rear window and seats on the front row, and in addition, climate control is included in each package.

Comfort

As soon as you get behind the wheel of the updated Hover H3, you immediately notice the almost complete absence of the unpleasant phenolic smell characteristic of many Chinese cars. You can easily get comfortable in the driver's seat - it is soft, with adequate lateral support and adjustable lumbar support. Seat trim - leather or velor. Wheel, like other Great Wall H-series SUVs, is adjustable exclusively for tilt. The dashboard is also standard "greatwall" - it is quite clear and perfectly readable. Functional on-board computer, unfortunately, has not changed: on the small screen located between the two "wells", the fuel consumption is indicated in only one form - instantaneous. The range of numbers that appear on the screen is very wide (from 0.1 to 29.0 liters), but the average "appetite" still needs to be calculated in the mind or using a calculator. In addition, the on-board computer display prompts from time to time to upshift or downshift, depending on road conditions.


Between the seats of the first row there is a large two-level box-armrest where you can store personal items. Next to it is a cigarette lighter socket (a similar socket is embedded in the trunk wall). The gearshift lever on the central tunnel has a nice plastic lining with an “expensive” texture. Alas, there is nowhere to attach a smartphone for charging - except perhaps in cup holders on the lining of the floor tunnel. In the rear of the cabin is spacious: there is enough space for the knees, even when it comes to tall passengers. The transmission tunnel will not interfere with the average passenger - it almost does not protrude from the floor. A surprise awaits under the right seat cushion - the Chinese put a set of tools there, useful for long-distance travel. The cushion of the rear sofa is slightly lower and shorter than necessary, and the backrest is not capable of being tilted, but it can be folded in a 1:2 ratio. The cargo compartment of the restyled version is no different from the trunk of its predecessor: its area is large, but the “roller” curtain is not as high as we would like. However, if desired, it is enough to remove it, thereby facilitating the process of loading and unloading luggage.


In 2010, the Irito company, which is the main importer of Hovers in Russia, conducted crash tests of the Hover H3 as part of the Safety Program Chinese cars mobile." The tests used the NCAP (New Car Assessment Program) methodology, which implies a frontal crash test with 40% overlap at a speed of 64 km / h, which is an imitation of a “live” frontal impact. In these tests, the Hover H3 was able to demonstrate a decent level of protection for the driver and passengers, earning 11.7 points out of 16 (73%). The standard equipment of the “Chinese” is rather modest: it includes front airbags, anti-lock brake system and braking system. Parking sensors, navigation and a rearview camera are available for an additional fee.


AT top configuration Hover H3 has a new multimedia system with a touch screen, AUX / USB inputs and Bluetooth for connecting gadgets, as well as an SD slot for downloading navigation maps. The graphics and sound of the multimedia are acceptable, the image from the rear view camera is clear, the blue backlight is not too pleasing to the eye, and the interface is overloaded with unnecessary information, such as compass, pressure and altitude above sea level. The temperature indicator overboard and the brightness adjustment of the touchscreen, as it was not, and is not. Obviously, the manufacturer still has work to do.

Specifications. If earlier the Great Wall H3 was offered with only one engine option, now power plants two:

  • A little later, modifications with a “new engine” reached Russia. Well, as “new” ... the motor is built on the basis of the old one, but received a redesigned fuel system, electronics reconfiguration and turbocharging from Shanghai MHI Turbocharger Co. (which is a subsidiary of Mitsubishi in China). As a result, with the same number of cylinders and with the old volume of 2.0 liters, the engine, which received the index "4G63S4T", can produce 177 hp. maximum power and about 250 Nm of torque (but certified as “150-horsepower” in the Russian Federation). Paired with this engine is a 6-speed manual transmission with "extended" gears - which should have a positive effect on the cross-country ability of an SUV ("5-mortar" quite often could not withstand serious loads - smoking the clutch). As for fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer, in the city, such a tandem will fit within 13.5 liters, and on the highway it will be limited to 10.0 liters of gasoline (a brand not lower than AI-92).

There were no noticeable changes in the design of the Great Wall New H3 chassis - the Chinese only slightly reconfigured the suspension and replaced some of the elements with “reinforced versions”. As before, the SUV is based on a ladder-type frame made of high-strength steel. At the front, the massive body rests on an independent double wishbone torsion bar suspension, supplemented by a stabilizer bar. roll stability. The rear of the SUV rests on a dependent spring suspension with a solid axle and a transverse stabilizer. In terms of cross-country ability, this model has previously shown itself worthy - confidently competing with many eminent SUVs, and after restyling it is able to "measure its strength" even with UAZ - the turbo engine endowed the Hover H3 with additional power, and the increased ground clearance and reliable crankcase protection will allow it not to notice most of the road obstacles.

The pre-styling Great Wall Hover H3 became the first Chinese car to receive 4 stars according to the results of crash tests conducted in Australia according to the EuroNCAP methodology.
