In short, the cabin could be rated excellent if not for one drawback. And this drawback is cramped space. There is practically no free space in the cabin, and carrying even a small bag in it is a problem. The only solution is to place it under the passenger's feet. Of course, the cramped cabin cannot be considered one of the car’s advantages, but it is clear that such a design decision was made in order to maximize the size of the cargo compartment. If the cabin was extended, it would have to be shortened or shifted cargo body, and this would reduce the consumer qualities of the truck.

And instead of a heart, there’s a fiery motor...

Like the basic version of the Patriot, the pickup truck is equipped with a gasoline power unit produced by the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant ZMZ-409.10 with a fuel injection distribution system. The operation of the electronic ignition system is controlled by the upgraded MIKAS-11 control unit.

The ZMZ-409.10 engine deserved good reviews operators and is one of the most reliable components of Patriot SUVs. During the test drive, the power unit showed itself to be the most the best side. It should be noted that when the car is fully loaded, it is impossible to accelerate it more than a hundred, although according to the passport data, maximum speed loaded to the full weight of the truck should be significantly higher.

Well, all the advantages of the UAZ Patriot Cargo are fully manifested in difficult conditions - on broken rural roads, in snow, mud, and slush. Here, Ulyanovsk SUVs simply have no competitors. There is no need to describe for a long time how we overcame a large swamp in a pickup truck; in order to reveal the limits of the all-terrain vehicle’s capabilities, you should drive it off-road yourself. I’m sure it won’t be an exaggeration to say that in real off-road conditions this “beast” will outshine any of its foreign counterparts that are not designed for such loads.

A notable feature of the tested UAZ Cargo model is the absence of special hub flags that block the cross-axle differential. The design with a rigidly fixed axle is, of course, long outdated, but everyone is so accustomed to it that even the assurances of dealers could not convince us of the absence of wheel couplings under decorative caps.

However, this turned out to be true; in the transmission system we were able to find only some Korean-made components, the purpose of which we were never able to find out anything about. Even questions from our friend who works at UAZ did not clarify anything. All that remains is to state that there are no hubs on the test model, but this does not in any way affect the behavior of the SUV.

The operation of the transmission could be called flawless, if not for a slight jamming of the lever all-wheel drive. The clutch pedal is surprisingly informative and soft. The pedal allows you to confidently control the speed of rotation of the wheels. Brought to world standards and steering, which was facilitated by German Delphi hydraulic boosters. The unit allows you to effortlessly rotate the steering wheel in place.

What about maintainability?

Operating experience shows that new pickups do not have any special problems with maintenance. Sales of Patriot cars are going quite well, and the clear organization of spare parts supply and after-sales service makes the car even more attractive to buyers.

ZMZ engines are quite reliable, and even complex electronic components do not create serious problems for users.

The Korean Dymos gearbox has also taken root in the conditions of our country; its maintenance and repair are well mastered by most service stations. But with self-repair drivers may have difficulties with the power unit, since access to the motor is quite difficult.

It is quite difficult for a not very dexterous person to even climb onto the UAZ Cargo bumper platform, not to mention repairing any component under the hood. To check the oil level in the engine, you don’t have to climb onto the bumper, but to pull out the dipstick, you need to fully extend your arms and lie down on the engine. Of course, the procedure is not a pleasant one, especially if the engine is covered in oil stains.

The situation with the carrying capacity and gross weight of the pickup truck is somewhat ambiguous. The gross vehicle weight is 2775 kg, and the load capacity is 815 kg. In this case, the load on the front axle should be 1090 kg, and on the rear axle 1685 kg. However, when the car is equipped, the same 1090 kg falls on the front axle, which means that the entire mass of the load will either fall entirely on the rear axle, or the front axle will be overloaded.


It is noteworthy that the rear wheelset UAZ PatriotCargo is not located in the middle of the cargo platform, but closer to its front edge. And this despite the fact that on this model the wheelbase is extended to three meters. It should be borne in mind that a long wheelbase creates quite serious problems for the cross-country ability of an SUV. Overloading a truck is strictly contraindicated, even with a standard load of 800 kg. the rear springs straightened and bent slightly reverse side. For rear suspension units, overloads are simply destructive, and 800 kg. This is the limit of the pickup's capabilities. True, some craftsmen add two spring leaves to each side, and boldly overload the pickup truck to a ton or more.

During the test drive, we were able to load the car with ballast according to the manufacturer's instructions. This made it possible to comply with the specified loads on the truck axles. However, a slight shift of the load forward or backward creates an overload on one of the axles.

We can hardly expect record production volumes of UAZ Cargo light trucks. In the coming years, it is unlikely to replace its unpretentious ancestor. This is a rather specific car, designed for a narrow market segment. However, we can confidently say that this all-wheel drive pickup truck will soon occupy its niche.

After all, in the Russian outback, with its traditional off-road conditions, it has practically no worthy competitors. The all-wheel drive Gazelle, despite its large load capacity, is not even close to the model in question in terms of cross-country ability. Yes and in other ways UAZ characteristics PatriotCargo is significantly preferable to a Nizhny Novgorod truck.

Foreign cars are not suitable for our periphery either due to their price or the complexity of repairs. And they are not designed to perform logistics tasks that the UAZ is capable of performing. This is the situation today where the only real competitor for the new UAZ Patriot Cargo is its grandfather, the UAZ 3303. But it’s high time for the honored veteran to retire, so the future belongs to his grandson, the “Patriot.”

Meeting the wishes of the market and its “buying core” (which is located in villages), the designers of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant in 2008 launched mass production of the UAZ Cargo pickup truck (factory code UAZ-23602-050), created on the basis of the UAZ Patriot (code UAZ- 3163).

It is worth noting the long process of the birth of this “SUV truck”: For about five years it was literally “cut out” by selecting components, making up a car that could satisfy the buyer... For the Simbir project, modern equipment was installed at assembly plant, but the project was “successfully abandoned”... However, this equipment later came in handy precisely for the UAZ Patriot and UAZ Cargo projects... As a result of long-term research development, it was decided to settle on the most objectively simple option: the Patriot chassis was stretched to 3000 mm, a cut-off cabin was installed on it (everything had already been adjusted in its production) and a platform with a wooden floor and metal sides from the “farmer” was attached to the rear " And it was this simple and logical option that worked - the truck turned out great... and, enjoying stable demand, it was updated “synchronously” with the base model.

No matter what the skeptics say, according to the reviews of one of the owners of the UAZ Cargo, “before discussing it, you would have to drive this car.” He says this after covering 150 thousand km, when after prolonged rains he came out more than once with a couple of carcasses of two-year-old bulls with country road... By the way, by sticking an extra leaf into the spring and installing cargo tires, this harvester can easily transport one and a half tons (according to technical passport the carrying capacity of the Cargo is 800 kg)... According to many drivers, it is also pleasing that (relative to the popular “loaves”) the UAZ Cargo has added an “extra meter of life” - from the bumper to the driver.

From a technical point of view, UAZ Cargo is a typical example of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. This is a two-door, two-seater chassis truck with permanent rear-wheel drive and rigidly connected front-wheel drive.

The Patriot's cabin is most naturally different from the budget "loaf" cabin.

Moreover, the front suspension with Elastogran components (manufactured by a division of BASF) ensures high comfort when driving on rural roads. Drivers are surprised by the feeling of permissiveness that Cargo inspires - they do not slow down even in front of deep holes.

The exterior of the cabin is replete with smooth lines. The cabin fully meets the expectations of rural drivers and even exceeds them. Visibility, optics, side mirrors, bumper - when meeting at a traffic light, all this creates the impression of meeting an imported SUV.
And the metallic colors, as well as linings and shields, enhance the favorable impression.

As already noted, the UAZ Cargo 23602 can be supplied as a chassis (only with rear lights) - this option is convenient for the subsequent installation of various add-ons (the most popular are manufactured goods and insulated vans, although other options can be found that are specially adapted to the needs of the owners).
And also - an onboard cargo platform (it is supplied both in “pure form” and equipped with an awning). The luggage space under the awning is 6250 liters and allows you to transport bulky structures.

In some cases, the internal comfort of the UAZ Cargo is even unnecessary for the conditions in which these trucks are operated. Everything is beautiful, but the cheap plastic gives itself away.

Continuing the conversation about the technical characteristics of the UAZ Cargo 23602 - the truck is equipped gasoline engine ZMZ-40906. The high-torque engine with a volume of 2.7 liters produces a maximum power of 135 horsepower. Together with a five-speed manual transmission this engine allows the Cargo to accelerate to a speed of 135 km/h.

Fuel consumption (AI92 gasoline) for this truck is about 14 liters “in the city” or 12 liters per 100 km “on a country road at a speed of 90 km/h.” The volume of the fuel tank is 68 liters... By the way, gas equipment can be installed as an option (cost 60~80 thousand rubles).

Long-standing conversations about equipping these machines diesel engine so far it has only ended with the Patriot receiving an Iveco F1A engine (and then “occasionally”), but not this truck. The fact is that this required modernization of the frame (front side members), the development of a new engine compartment frame, the development of a new cooling system, the development of a new exhaust system... It is quite obvious that the UAZ Cargo project has not yet “accumulated the funds” to implement such serious design changes... and therefore the timing of equipping the UAZ Cargo with a diesel engine is still unknown.

All talk about the truck's shortcomings comes down to obvious little things. According to driver reviews, the shortcomings include simple factory defects or naturally occurring defects: all the clamps are not tightened (this happens even on foreign cars), a burst gas line hose, a defect expansion tank and similar little things that can be solved very simply.

The recommended price for UAZ Cargo from dealers in 2017 is from ~767 thousand rubles “in the base” to ~839 thousand in the “Comfort” package (with air conditioning and power accessories). For this class of car the price is quite reasonable.
