The suction cup does not stick to the glass. Vacuum suction cup for removing dents on a car: description, types and instructions. What to do to prevent it from falling off

A suction cup is a device that can be attached to hard surfaces. More often it is an elastic concave disk, in which the cavity can be isolated from external environment, which leads to the appearance of low pressure in it. Due to this, it stays on the surface.

Today, suction cups are used in construction, for example, for moving glass. They are used in production processes for transferring sheet materials. They are used in everyday life for hanging hooks, shelves in the bathroom, and in the kitchen. In this case, there is no need to drill the tile, making holes in it to accommodate fasteners.

The cost of household suction cups, which can be used to mount, for example, a shelf on the wall, is considerable. Often they, made in China, quickly become non-working and are simply thrown away.

So as not to despair, not to regret lost money, it’s worth learning how to make such fasteners yourself from polyurethane. In addition to this material, you will need to prepare: a knife; rolling pin; plasticine; soap solution; release agent; old suction cup

Take plasticine of any color, knead it, and separate a piece. Form it into a thick pancake and spray it with soapy water. Roll it out with a rolling pin to a thickness of 1...2 mm. The rolling pin is also sprayed with a soap solution to prevent it from sticking to the plasticine.

An old suction cup is placed on the resulting thinly rolled pancake of plasticine. Make a plasticine blank: cut around the base with a margin; turn over the old suction cup; place a plasticine circle on its bottom; press down the plasticine in the center of the circle so that it becomes concave; the edges are bent to the edges of the old suction cup, forming sides; put everything on the plasticine side on the table, take out the old suction cup. Get a mold into which the new suction cup will be poured.

Weigh the old suction cup on the scales, determining the required amount of polyurethane for the craft. The material is measured on the scales. Separate half and knead.

Spray the inside of the mold with release agent. It will not allow plasticine and polyurethane to set. Pour the previously prepared mixture of material into the mold. Wait 1...2 hours, during which the polyurethane will set a little and lose its fluidity.

Place the bolt in the top center, with the head on the polyurethane. It will later become the basis for attaching the hook to the suction cup. The bolt head should be ground down, reducing its height to a minimum. This is necessary so that it fits into the thickness of the polyurethane, which is small.

Knead the rest of the polyurethane, pour the mixture into the mold on top of the almost set material. Leave it for a day. Then they take it out and test it. They get a very cheap suction cup that holds even better than those sold in the store, especially Chinese ones. The time spent on its production, not counting the setting of the polyurethane, took no more than 15 minutes.

Nowadays, a large number of gadgets, be it a video recorder, a radar detector, or just a phone mount, are attached to suction cups (usually two or three small ones) or to one, but massive one (which has a lever on the body for greater effect). However, not very high-quality suction cups may fall off windshield! Everything seems to be secured well, but you hang up your device, and it falls off in cold, hot weather or on bumps - “BANG”! And if a gadget costs several thousand rubles, you can break it! In general, it’s really unpleasant or even dangerous, but what to do, how to deal with it? Today there are several really working methods that will help you almost “tightly” glue such a mount to the windshield, there will be a video at the end...

Suction cups are not the only mount on the windshield; there are a lot of them, ranging from simple ones to magnetic mounts. However, they are inconvenient to install, and some are also difficult to remove, say, to transfer to another car. The suction cups really win here, “stick it, unstick it” - drag it where you need it. BUT if the suction cup is of poor quality, it falls off the windshield, even if the car is standing still.

Types of suckers

As I already wrote, there are usually two or three of them in the mount to better hold the gadget.

And there are single, but massive ones. They are made mainly from two materials - rubber and silicone. Rubber suction cups are dark (often black) in color, but silicone ones are often transparent.

There is a lot of debate about which of them is better. However, in my experience, the regular rubber options held up better. Silicone hardens much more in cold weather, which makes the suction cup less elastic.

Although to be fair, it’s really difficult to choose between these two options! Because there is high-quality silicone, and there is low-quality rubber.

How does the suction cup work?

Actually, there is nothing magical here, remember the school physics course. If we describe the essence of the phenomenon in a few words, it turns out that almost zero pressure is created under the suction cup, since we pressed the surface to the windshield and pulled it towards ourselves. But we have atmospheric pressure, which always puts pressure on us and on the objects around us, and since it is quite high, it presses on the surface of the suction cup on the other side, pressing it to the surface (it seems to try to fill the internal vacuum under the suction cup).

Thus, if the suction cup is working properly, it will stick very firmly to the windshield. But why does it fall off?

Why does the suction cup fall off?

There are only a few reasons:

  • Poor quality production. If it is made poorly, there are distortions or bends, then it will not hold. After all, precision manufacturing is important here.
  • Insufficient pressure. Conventional options (without levers) cannot create sufficient pressure inside, they will not withstand heavy weights. That's why more of them are needed, two or three pieces

  • Breakthrough. If the rubber or silicone surface breaks, then the vacuum that was created inside will immediately be filled with “atmospheric pressure”, the gadget will not hold on
  • Dirty surface. Before gluing it to the windshield, it is worth wiping it, it is advisable to degrease it; if there is any deposit on the surface, it will facilitate the passage of air inside, through certain time it will fall off again
  • Imperfect surfaces. Both the windshield and the suction cup itself. They have microcracks and other imperfections. It is through them that, slowly but surely, air will leak inside. Over time it will fall off again

What you need to learn is a simple truth, so that air pressure does not pass inside, and there is a vacuum inside as long as possible.

What should I do to prevent it from falling off?

There are only two tasks:

  • Clear the atmosphere inside as much as possible.
  • Don't let that negative pressure escape

This is why the side edges of the suction cup are made so wide! And they try to make the material as elastic as possible so that it adheres well to the glass.

Often normal fastenings fall off due to the fact that the suction cup is not sealed. And to make it as good as possible, you just need to wet the surface. Any liquid seems to clog the “microcracks” and prevent air pressure from leaking out. And yes, water is not exactly the best option.

Many people wet the surface with water (or even saliva) , this is of course correct, but in winter it can freeze, but in summer it simply evaporates. Therefore, you need a composition that will not evaporate, freeze or harden. Motor oil is ideal, you need a little on your finger, wipe the surface of the suction cup and attach it to the windshield. WILL HOLD ON for a very long time!

The second “jamb” of modern gadgets - this is a “lever” in the mount that creates a lot of pressure. Often it makes almost a full turn (180 degrees), but it starts working only at the very pressure, only 25 - 35 degrees, that is, the remaining angle works idle. We need to reduce this idling, what is done - from ordinary car camera a circle is cut out around the rim of the suction cup (like a gasket), then all the insides are cut out inside and it is inserted between the suction cup and the body.

, version of a miniature heating table, top IR emitter, homemade suction cup, version of a homemade suction cup. There is an alternative - hot air soldering station

When working with a soldering station, especially when lifting a BGA chip, reliable and precise gripping of the part being soldered is required. The only way to reduce damage to the solder balls and avoid moving adjacent small parts is to lift the chip vertically, avoiding the slightest lateral shift when touched and grabbed by the tool. This is usually hindered by the small distance between the edge of the chip and the board, the small area of the side faces, the bevels of the edges from which the tweezers slide off, there is not always free space, and often the soldering equipment itself gets in the way.

Many tools have been invented for this purpose and ways to work with them. One of them is vacuum tweezers, the so-called “Vampire”. Its operating principle is the vacuum of air in the suction cup, which serves as a grip and creates a sealed contact with the part. The reliability of the grip and the maximum lifting weight depend precisely on the degree of rarefaction of air in the system and the degree of its sealing.

Requirements for the suction cup: must be elastic with a very smooth working edge, durable and heat-resistant. Personally, I was unable to find a factory-made suction cup that can withstand temperatures normally; one I bought changed its shape after 1 minute of heating to 200 degrees. For a homemade soldering station, you can also make a suction cup with your own hands.

Silicone is not a bad material for making a suction cup.

From ready-made and available silicone blanks, you can use elastic pushers for a computer keyboard. It is the top edge that is interesting, it is small in diameter, the plane of the edge has no breaks, and can withstand temperatures up to 280 degrees. It is not difficult to cut out a hole and trim off the excess. The suction cup is ready. There is a minus though. the material is thin at the point where the hole is cut and, as a result, does not adhere well to the needle. To do this, the suction cup is glued to the needle using silicone sealant.

The sealant itself can serve as a material for making a suction cup. Black, or better yet red, automotive sealants are suitable for this. When hardened, they are very elastic and quite resistant to high temperature. The sucker can be poured out entirely by choosing a suitable shape. Or you can carve, cut from already hardened sealant. Remember that the lower, working edge must be perfectly smooth.

We pour or rather spread the sealant onto the glass with a layer of 5-6 mm, the glass is lightly lubricated with grease, wait a few days until the mass completely sets. We get a blank for making a homemade suction cup.

The principle is this: the greater the thickness of the material, the greater the taper of the carved suction cup, since the material is greatly stretched when carved in the lower part.

For the cutting itself, I used a thick metal rod from an old ballpoint pen; the wide side carved out the shape of the suction cup itself, and the narrow end - a hole. Tubes from telescopic radio antennas work well. Before cutting, turn the workpiece over with the smooth side up. Try to make the hole narrower than the tube on which the suction cup will be placed or glue it with the same sealant.

Ready-made homemade suction cups for

Straightening work on automobile bodies often requires the connection of specialized equipment. The situation is complicated by the fact that external defects have to be removed along with the paintwork. That is, solving one problem inevitably poses new tasks that require additional financial investments. In case of minor damage to the metal surface, you can use alternative and less expensive means. Thus, a suction cup for removing dents is gaining popularity, allowing not only to preserve the paintwork in the problem area, but also to do without the help of specialists.

Tool structure

The design is quite simple and is not particularly difficult to use. The functional basis is based on the suction cup itself, which is made of a combination of high-strength plastic and rubber lining. During operation, this part grabs the damaged area and then, under the applied force, pulls it out, restoring the original geometry of the surface. The second important component is due to which the action occurs. There are models that operate on the hydraulic principle, and the simplest modifications implement lever pressure. In both cases, paintless dent removal suction cups can only work on damage that is the right size. Most models correct only gentle dents with a diameter of about 15-20 cm. If there is significant metal bending or stretching, the tool will be ineffective.

Varieties

In addition to hydraulic and mechanical lever suction cups, such modifications also exert force from the pressure pumping compressed air. If manual effort is not enough, then it makes sense to turn to such equipment. The tools are also distinguished by the configuration of the suction cups. There are single models with one gripping point, but with a large diameter. And to work with large areas of defects, it is advisable to use models that combine 2-3 suction cups at once. Such a device not only expands the area of action of the mechanism, but also minimizes the contact area with the paintwork. But it is important to consider that a multi-component suction cup for removing dents requires experience and appropriate training during operation. Some versions also require the operation to be performed using an assistant.

Preparing for hood

The quality of correction of the problem area is greatly influenced by proper preparation. It is imperative to clean, rinse and degrease the working area using special auto chemicals for the body. The suction cup is also prepared separately. It is connected to the hammer through threads. It is important to make sure that this part can ensure smooth and unhindered movement during the drawing process. For correct correction, jerks are extremely undesirable, so it is better to check the thread before even starting the straightening procedure. By the way, if the suction cup for removing dents on a car has insufficient length of the mating line with the hammer, then you should prepare an additional washer. But it is recommended to avoid such inclusions - the shorter the rod with the transmission of the drawing force, the more effective the control of the recovery deformation of the metal.

Instructions for using the suction cup

Vacuum straightening is carried out in several stages. After the surface has been cleaned, it is necessary to mark the gripping points. The correct geometric calculation is important here so that the force action ensures the hood in the right direction. It is advisable to start the operation from the edges of the deformation zone towards the middle. The suction cup circle is fixed using special glue. In this case, you need to wait 5-10 minutes for it to set at the point where the voltage is applied. Next, the hammer itself is used, and, depending on the principle of exerting force, the drawing process begins with a corresponding shift to the side towards the center of the problem area. According to the circular motion pattern, with a decrease in the damage radius, the suction cup should gradually move to remove dents. It is advisable to perform this operation with your own hands while wearing gloves, and if a compressor unit is used, then the compressed air supply must be strictly balanced. Excessive tension can cause hoods to extend beyond the normal plane of the body.

Positive aspects of using a suction cup

Since the advent of vacuum equipment, there has been skepticism about this technology. Few motorists believed that the tool actually preserved paint and pulled out metal surfaces. Nevertheless, the main advantage of the method lies in its effectiveness. Given that proper preparation the deformed area has every chance of leaving the decorative coating of the body in its original form. Also, the dent removal suction cup requires a little time to operate. According to users, typical shallow damage is corrected manually in 30-40 minutes.

Disadvantages of the method

Unfortunately, the method does not provide 100% restoration of the geometric line. Even professional locksmiths do not always achieve a visually smooth surface. But, taking into account the simplicity of the recovery mechanism, many are satisfied with the results obtained. Another disadvantage of the method is the limitations of its use. It has already been said that a vacuum suction cup for removing dents cannot be used in places where the metal is stretched and has strong bends. But this method also cannot be used if the deformation zone has damage to the paintwork. The fact is that in this case you can’t count on preserving the paint layer. The coating will be further destroyed by the suction cup, and the vacuum grip mechanism may not work at all.

Nuances of choosing a tool

When choosing a suction cup, you can follow two tactics. This is either the purchase of an ergonomic universal model with several gripping points, or the targeted purchase of a mechanism for working with dents with specific characteristics. Next, the method of force is determined, which will depend on the complexity of the operations performed. For working with shallow defects, a manual suction cup for removing dents is also suitable, but massive damage over a large area is more convenient to correct using a compressor.

Alternative Technologies

Even before the advent of vacuum straightening technology, home craftsmen in garages used the method of drawing from the inside using the same lever method. But today this technique is practically not used due to the complexity of organizing its implementation. But a magnetic vacuum suction cup for removing dents has become widespread. You can implement this method with your own hands without a special tool. It is enough to arm yourself with a rag and a magnet block with sufficient voltage. Next, through the lining of the rag, the active element is applied to the dent and pulled back. In terms of efficiency, this method is not as impressive compared to a factory adhesive vacuum, but correction of minor damage is quite feasible.

Conclusion

The use of a compact vacuum with a suction cup is organically included in the concept of garage repair using folk technologies. The method is simple, effective and, most importantly, cheap. A basic set of such a device can be purchased on the market for 1-2 thousand rubles. By adding a few thousand more, the arsenal of tools can be replenished with a multifunctional straightening station with a compressor and several gripping points. But in any design, a vacuum suction cup for removing dents also implies the presence of certain risks in terms of aggravating the situation. This too characteristic feature for traditional repair methods. Many beginners mistakenly believe that the key to successful vacuum extraction lies in the force potential of the deforming effect. This is not at all true, since most often the applied effort is enough. Another thing is that it is not always possible to find the optimal balance between effort and the direction of its application. Therefore, there is a possibility of excessive deformation of the area covering a flat area.

Nowadays, a large number of gadgets, be it a video recorder, a radar detector, or just a phone mount, are attached to suction cups (usually two or three small ones) or to one, but massive one (which has a lever on the body for greater effect). Suction cups are not the only mount on the windshield; there are many different ones, ranging from simple "3M" tape, ending with magnetic fastenings. Once you start pressing the suction cup with the lever, this “spacer” will reduce the idle speed and increase the pressure inside. IT WILL HOLD SEVERAL TIMES BETTER, tested many times.

Here's a short summary:

  • Checking the rubber or silicone surface for damage
  • Degreasing glass
  • Lubricate the surface of the suction cup (ideal motor oils, because they don’t freeze in winter and don’t evaporate in summer)
  • You can make a spacer (ideally from a wheel tire) between the plastic and rubber (silicone) components, thus increasing the pressure

Now we are watching a short video version.

We bought it more “just like that” - but suddenly there were many uses and even a second order was made :)

I saw a topic about “machine holder” - I decided to develop the topic! 😉

The first purchase was made in another store, in fact, the review was written on it... but the link no longer works + in the one posted in the header large selection by size.

The thought of purchasing arose after writing a review about car curtains. Describing the disadvantages that the curtain dangles from below and I would like to “pull it” - additional suction cups are needed for this. Then I decided to buy a few pieces to implement the “refinement” + an idea immediately arose for additional possible applications... and so off we go. Having already had them in hand for review, I came up with a few more options, perhaps not so obvious, but still! It turned out that this little thing can be useful in various situations.
It would seem that the first thing that comes to mind is what they might be useful for? Well, naturally - what the sellers themselves present in advertising on the store page... something like that...

Well, or something like this... Let’s also assume that “it” will constantly fall off (from the experience of using some kind of rubber ones - I once came across these a long time ago).

Although the seller himself is also beginning to come up with other options for use, due to the fact that suction cups made of new materials hold better.

Well, the first thing I bought them for was - I tried to modify the curtains - I glued them on the veranda, and not in the car (there is no difference for trying on functionality) :)
It turned out something like this:

Well, of course, there was nothing complicated in such a modification - everything holds up perfectly, and the suction cups (to my surprise) turned out to be very “sticky”, and better quality original from the curtain...
Since there were a dozen of them in the lot, my wife “selected” a few of them (and said that the ones allocated to her were not enough :) - she immediately stuck them on the side of the refrigerator at the entrance and made an impromptu key holder.

like there’s no point in having keys scattered all over the refrigerator :) The wall of the refrigerator is not exactly smooth, but these The suction cups have been hanging for more than two months and are not going to fall off. And I must say they hang quite firmly :) I became curious even HOW MUCH!?

I didn’t notice the moment of separation, but as you can see in the photo, more than 3 kg can easily be withstood, despite the fact that I’m also pulling at an angle! Just like an ant weighs 3 grams. but it holds 3 kg and this is from a not too smooth surface! I wonder if this is even such a coincidence? Weighs 3g, holds 3.33 in the photo! 🙂

The suction cups from the first order are approximately 4 cm in diameter, but how long will the larger ones last? :)))

Looking ahead, from the second order I attached a suction cup with a diameter of 6 cm - the last photo, which clearly conveys the weight (probably not just a coincidence - here, too, the diameter of 6 cm holds 6.6 kg in the photo 😉

Believe it or not, the last photo (which turned out blurry) was supposed to show a weight of 10 kg!!! Then the hook broke :))))) At what weight I didn’t have time to notice, because... the hook with a characteristic sound broke, which “distracted” me from the process; I did not expect such a loud sound. It broke because inclusions were visible in the plastic - air bubbles, otherwise it probably would have lasted longer...

There are tons of them in the store different sizes! There is even 8cm.

I didn’t buy the eight centimeter ones, but with a second order I bought 6, 2.5 and 3 cm in addition to the 4 cm ones I had.

The suction cups themselves are collapsible, so you can attach objects to them in a variety of ways.

Those. if you pull out the hook, you can thread a cord, for example, and, if necessary, make an improvised curtain for a window in seconds - this can be useful in new buildings, for example, or during renovations.

Since the suction cup holds a decent weight, you can even hang a calendar

For example, you can make such a mount from two suction cups...

upd Option for a car - you are carrying an open carton of milk, or another “tipping” object - it can be placed in a regular plastic bag and hung on the side rear window, it will not roll over when turning and, in theory, should not spill...

Enough useful application I came up with an idea (albeit out of season) - it’s really convenient and easy to attach all kinds of New Year’s decorations to the windows... it’s not very clear in the photo - the background is a little in the way (and the lack of snow;) In a couple of minutes I hung the toy and stretched the garland...

By the way, you can temporarily throw the wire from the recorder into the car, for example, by attaching it to hooks, although of course the photo in the photo is far from an ideal option, but I think the idea is clear (and there is no need to shout about the collective farm 😉 - TEMPORARY:)…

The car was actually intended to be purpose number 2 when purchased.
Or rather a radar detector! After all, it’s not news to anyone that many radar detectors have really crappy suction cups that constantly fall off :)
True, the suction cups from the first order did not fit the size of the “burdocks” a little,

I was lazy to redo it, so I decided to wait for the second ones, and bought a slightly smaller diameter there. And so, they fit perfectly into the seat!
The second steels seem to have been made specifically for this mount :)

In principle, they hold up fine, but you can additionally secure them with “something”

Of course it’s better not like this :)

It is possible to use suction cups for the greenhouse (as it turned out) - for example, to “throw” the carrier off the ground

the option with fixation can be a clamp - the hook can be easily removed.

Although it seemed to me that the suction cups hold worse on thin polycarbonate due to the surface topography.

And of course, another “typical” application is to replace a wheelbarrow... why buy a special one. device, if it is possible to use the existing one quite successfully.

Below I will add original ideas for readers to use suction cups! Thanks for the ideas!
from the user
mooni73

When I take heated food out of the microwave, I can remove the top plate without getting burned with this suction cup.

These are the small researches that turned out to be 😉
Naturally, these are not all the options, but the first thing that came to mind after drinking beer on Friday was a little fun/review! So I thought - should I have posted it on Friday too, in order to be “on the same page”?

Let there be srach! 😉

Benefits of tile suction cups

Suction cups are incredibly popular among consumers. This is understandable because they are easy to mount on the wall and do not require drilling any holes in the tiles. Many products are already produced with Velcro.

The reliability of attaching Velcro to the wall depends on the quality of the materials from which they are made.

When purchasing, you should pay attention to the surface of the suction cup - its inner surface should be absolutely smooth. This factor is very important, as it decides whether the suction cup will be suitable for attachment. You should also choose only suction cups of the correct shape.

The advantage of silicone holders is that they are easy to mount on the wall

Advantages of suction cups:

  • They are quickly attached to the surface, without the need to use auxiliary tools.
  • They do not spoil the tiles with unsightly marks on its surface.
  • They are distinguished by their mobility. They are easy to dismantle and move from place to place.
  • The low cost allows you to purchase various types of suction cups.

With suction cups already attached, you can buy a soap dish, special hooks, shelves, shower holders, various accessories, toilet paper holders, etc. Silicone suction cups are durable, economical and have a wide range of options. When purchasing a suction cup, it is important to remember that not only the quality of the accessory is important, but also the type of finishing material.

How to attach a suction cup to tiles: methods of attachment

To securely attach the suction cup, you need to be confident in the quality of the material from which it is made. If even the slightest roughness is found on the suction cup, this may indicate that the material was manufactured using the wrong technology. Such suction cups often come off, which creates great discomfort for the owners.

Before purchasing Velcro, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the tile itself. It will not be possible to attach Velcro to embossed tiles.

Velcro adheres best to tiles with a glossy surface. The matte surface has pores that weaken the Velcro fastening. It is not advisable to attach Velcro to raised protrusions, tiles with various defects, or to glue particles - all of them will contribute to the suction cup coming off. It is important that there are no chips or cracks on the surface of the tile.

There are several ways to attach the suction cup to the tile, which you can choose at your discretion.

Mounting methods:

  • Use alcohol to degrease the tile surface.
  • Apply Vaseline or other similar products.
  • Place PVC film, which has a self-adhesive backing.
  • Strengthen the suction cups with silicone sealant.

The choice of method depends on what object the suction cups will hold. The weight and dimensions of the product should be taken into account. It is important to remember that in order to securely attach the suction cups using any of the methods, you must first thoroughly clean the surface of dirt.

How to attach a suction cup hook to tiles

Suction hooks are a very practical accessory. But its practicality can only be guaranteed if the vacuum suction cup is properly attached. An important factor is the type of tile and its condition.

Before purchasing hooks, it is important to determine their type and size; for this you need to know exactly what objects it will hold.

In order for the suction cup to attach to the tile, it is important to treat not only the tile, but also the internal silicone surface of the suction cup with alcohol. Using Vaseline, cream or plain water often helps to improve adhesion between surfaces. But before attaching Velcro to the cracked tile, its surface needs to be restored.

Before gluing the suction cup to the wall, you should first thoroughly clean the surface

Tip for attaching the hook to the suction cup:

  1. Degrease the surface. This method is suitable for holding objects of small weight and size on a hook. It is important that the surface is completely free from dust, dirt, plaque, rust, grease, soap, etc. After all the manipulations, the suction cup can be firmly pressed against the tile - this is enough for it to firmly attach to the surface.
  2. Use Vaseline. It improves the quality of adhesion between silicone and tiles. This method is completely safe, as it involves the use of environmentally friendly materials.
  3. Fastening with PVC film. If heavier objects will be placed on the hook, it will be useful to know about this method of fastening. To do this, cut a circle of suitable diameter from the film. The self-adhesive is attached to the casting, and a suction cup is already attached to it - it must coincide with the contours of the film.
  4. For significant loads, silicone sealant is used. With its help, two surfaces are firmly connected to each other. The sealant is easy to clean without damaging the tile surface.

The last method is the most reliable if the hook is not going to be moved often. To do this, use a suction cup with reverse side usually lubricated with sealant, then pressed sweatily against the wall. Do not immediately hang the hook. In order for it to attach securely, it must be left to dry for a day.

Methods for attaching silicone Velcro

Many people think about what will happen if they stick silicone Velcro on a tile, and how long it will last. This can be done in different ways - this will determine how long the Velcro will last. Silicone adheres well to the tile surface, but there are nuances in which the Velcro may fall off.

Chewing gum that is not attached to anything may fall off when the temperature or humidity in the room changes.

It is especially important that the Velcro sticks tightly in the bathroom, where there is always high humidity. You can make a more reliable fastening using silicone sealant. It is important to decide in advance what will hang on the hook. For example, one type of Velcro is used for towels, and another for a hairdryer.

You can easily attach the silicone holder using sealant

Sealant mounting method:

  • Take a transparent sealant.
  • The surface of the suction cup and the place where it will be attached should be degreased with alcohol.
  • Apply a thin layer to the inner surface of the suction cup.
  • Press the suction cup firmly onto the tile.
  • If necessary, sealant that has come out beyond the edges of the suction cup can be removed with a spatula.

The disadvantage of this method is that the suction cup becomes disposable. It will not be possible to attach it to a new place. But it will last quite a long time, although the reliability of fastening and the timing depend on the quality of the tile and the level of humidity in the room. You should not use glass sealant as it will look unsightly.

What are silicone wall holders (video)

Silicone Velcro are modern holders that ensure reliable and secure fastening. If done correctly, suction cups can last for many years. It is important that the material from which they are made is of high quality. You should check that there are no roughness or bumps on the surface of the Velcro. You should also pay attention to the surface of the tile itself - it should be smooth. Any defects will lead to the fact that the suction cup will not hold and will often fall off. The suction cups hold well if they are attached to the sealant.

Glue the suction cup onto the tile

When choosing items for the bathroom or kitchen, the owners understand that most of them can be mounted in this way. But this raises the question of ensuring that the fastening is strong, but does not leave marks on the surface.

So, the first thing you need to do is degrease the area where you will attach the Velcro. To do this, wash the tiles with soap or any other detergent. It is best not to attach the object “by eye”, but to mark the necessary points with a pencil or marker. Before you begin installing a shelf or any other store-bought item, inspect the box it came in. You can find there special polyethylene circles with one adhesive side. Stick them on the designated points and attach the suction cups themselves to them. If you don’t find such circles, you can always make them yourself.

To do this, buy self-adhesive plastic film at the stationery store. It is usually used for cold lamination purposes. For your case, you will need very little of it - a couple of centimeters. From this film, cut out circles of the required diameter and glue them as a base for the suction cups.

It is thanks to the base of polyethylene circles that your items will hold on long enough and you will not have to use glue for this.

How to glue a hook

Very often, when choosing interior elements for a bathroom or kitchen, owners are interested in the options for towel hooks. Many of them are attached using adhesive technology. But what if you want to hang not just a thin waffle towel, but a large bath towel on such a hook? How to attach a hook so that it can withstand any load? The task becomes especially difficult if you have placed textured tiles in the bathroom or kitchen, which do not allow the suction cup to fit tightly to the wall.

To be sure of the strength and durability of such a hook without spoiling the aesthetic appearance, use transparent silicone sealant. Apply it evenly onto the suction cup and press it to the surface. If the sealant runs off the edges, you can wipe it off immediately or scrape it off with a razor blade after it dries. By leaving such a hook to dry for a day, you can confidently use it in the future and not think that it will not withstand a large towel or robe. If you want to remove the hook, the clear sealant can be easily removed with a razor blade or wallpaper knife.

How to securely secure a soap dish

The soap dish, like other parts of the bathroom interior, may also have a fastening in the form of one or more Velcro. Since a soap dish is used more often than a hook or shelf, it is especially important to secure it so that it does not fall. To answer the question, you can simply look at the previous methods. Try first, before attaching the soap dish to the wall, moisten it with water and degrease the tiles with soap. If this method turns out to be unreliable, use silicone gel. This approach will certainly ensure the durability and aesthetics of your soap dish.

Glue the suction cup onto the glass

This especially often becomes a problem for drivers who complain about the insufficient strength of such windshield mounts for navigators, phone stands and other items in the car. It is important to remove dirt and grease from the surface on which you will be attaching the item. This can be done using glass cleaner that contains alcohol. In this case, you need to wash not only the surface, but also the Velcro itself. After this procedure, the secured item will not cause you any inconvenience.

Taking into account all the tips and recommendations, you can easily take advantage of convenient interior elements. The methods proposed above will leave you no reason to worry about the strength of the fixed items and the duration of their use.

Before gluing it to the windshield, you should wipe it, it is advisable to degrease it; if there is any deposit on the surface, it will help the passage of air inside, after a certain time it will fall off again

DVR mount

The suction cup type bracket allows you to place the DVR in a place convenient for the driver. The device should not obscure the view, but at the same time be positioned so that the person sitting behind the wheel can turn the video recording device on and off at any time and see what is displayed on the screen. The holders have different designs, as well as different areas of the fastening element itself for installation; fasteners can be purchased separately from the recording device itself.

Suction cups can be rubber and silicone, with a lever or the simplest, with a side rotating mechanism, with two rubber/silicone fasteners, there are other types. The brackets included in the kit are designed taking into account the weight of the recorder, but do not always fulfill their purpose.

Why doesn't the suction cup hold?

Often the manufacturer is blamed for the weak fixation of the DVR on the glass; indeed, it is difficult to expect super performance from a cheap gadget, high quality manufacturing. But is it worth shifting the blame to the manufacturer? There are quite a lot of reasons why the fastener falls off:

  • the suction cup was not installed according to the instructions;
  • the glass is dirty (oily), dust and greasy stains make it difficult to ensure tight contact;
  • due to heating (for example, being in direct sunlight), the mounting area has become deformed, and a vacuum is not created;
  • the holder was attached in cold weather;
  • the surface for attaching the suction element is uneven;
  • The bracket is not original and is not designed to support the weight of this device.

To understand the issue, you first need to understand how vacuum fasteners work and their principle of holding them on a plane.

How is the DVR bracket held in place?

A “suction cup” type fastening element is held on the plane due to a pressure difference; when a silicone or rubber circle is flattened on the surface, a reduced pressure is formed inside it. But the bracket is fixed only when the material is absolutely sealed and air from the outside does not get inside the circle. If there is even a microscopic hole in the rubber band, there will be no suction effect, such a holder can be safely thrown away. The suction cup can only be secured if it is completely sealed, and you cannot press it and immediately release it, in which case it is guaranteed to fall off.

Under what conditions is it difficult to install the holder?

The most common reason for a weak DVR bracket is low temperature, basically the sucker falls off in the cold. This happens because rubber or silicone hardens at low temperatures and loses its elasticity. Also, the rubber band does not hold up in the heat; if you left the car for a while in the sun, you should not be surprised that upon your return you will find a fallen recorder.

It will be difficult to install the holder on glass covered with dust; the rubber circle itself should not be dirty either. The suction cup holds very poorly on uneven glass, for example, if it is silk-screened. Here it is no longer possible to level the surface; you need to figure out how to ensure tight contact. Another thing to consider is that Russian market a lot of Chinese products, and fastener may initially be defective.

But if you can’t immediately secure the bracket well in the car, you don’t need to despair, there are many different tricks and folk methods that you can use to securely install portable device on the windshield.

Rules for attaching the recorder holder

Before using cunning methods and non-standard techniques, you first need to try to install the suction cup according to all the rules. We install the DVR by performing the following steps:

  • With a clean napkin or rag moistened with alcohol or degreaser, we wipe the surface on which the device will be mounted, and we also degrease (clean) the base of the recorder bracket;
  • we wait for some time, we need the treated surfaces to dry;
  • press the holder tightly against the glass, if it has a lever, press and lower it, hold it for a minute or two, it is necessary for the suction cup to “grab” and secure in place;
  • After installing the bracket, we check the reliability of the installation - we try to unfasten the holder by hand, but there is no need to pull very hard.

You need to check by looking from the back of the glass how the rubber circle is installed: if there are even microscopic air bubbles, then there is an almost one hundred percent guarantee that the suction cup will not hold on for a long time. If the bracket does not want to take the place allotted to it, we try various methods to help the suction cup fit tightly.

Methods to help securely attach the bracket

There are methods that help to secure the suction cup more securely, here are some of them (as car enthusiasts advise):

  • warm up the fastening element by bringing it close to the heater fan, while the car interior must be warmed up;
  • use double-sided tape;
  • coat the contact surface of the bracket with silicone;
  • cut a rubber gasket along the diameter of the circle and place it between the glass and the holder;
  • To seal, add a little glycerin to the contact surface; you can also use laundry soap and garlic juice.

Not all of the listed methods work 100%, and there are side effects. The adhesive tape holds up well, but in the sun it heats up and loses its properties. An additional rubber gasket helps in many cases, but you just need to take into account that the DVR becomes a little heavier, the load on the bracket increases (it can break), and adding rubber is pointless on suction cups without a lever. Garlic juice always helps, but not everyone likes the smell it gives off. A solution of laundry soap gives a good effect, you just need to take one thing into account - until the soap has dried, you can move the suction cup on the glass, then everything will set tightly. Silicone should be spread in a not too thin layer, evenly, its disadvantage is that it sets well only after a day; if you drive the car right away, the fasteners may fall off. Another drawback is that the silicone-lubricated holder moves across the surface.

Questionable ways to attach the holder

There are a lot of tips that motorists give, but how useful are they all? big question. Drivers also advise:

  • lubricate the contact surface with engine oil;
  • use brake fluid as a fixing agent;
  • moisten the contact with saliva;
  • attach the bracket with superglue;
  • attach the suction cup to the sealant;
  • To improve contact, use Pepsi-Cola.

Motor oil is a good way to create reliable contact, but we must not forget that the quality of the rubber seal of the suction cup, especially from Chinese manufacturers, varies; the rubber can swell and “float”. Brake fluid and saliva are water-based; when the moisture dries, the reliability of the contact deteriorates. Automotive colored sealant does not look aesthetically pleasing; it is possible that traces will remain after its application, but transparent silicone sealant will come in handy. Some people attach the suction cup with superglue, but this seems like a perversion - it is not a fact that the mount will not fall off, but scraping off the remaining glue from the glass will not be easy.

Recorder bracket repair

There are often cases when the suction cup itself becomes unusable: the plastic pin holding the “hat” breaks. This happens if you remove the DVR and pull it by the body without being careful.

One way to fix it is to smear the pin with superglue, but the connection will not hold for long, sooner or later the “cap” will fall off. The easiest option is to buy a new mount, but you can still try to restore the suction cup; repairs will cost much less than the purchase. Let's look at how you can repair a suction cup with a lever:

Thus, you can restore almost any bracket for a DVR; the procedure takes little time, and there is no need to buy a new holder.
