However, there is no need to complain about sluggish pickup under any conditions, be it off-road, driving along mountain serpentine roads or pushing in traffic jams. On a mountain road, I liked operating the steering wheel paddles of the automatic transmission, keeping the engine at peak traction. The 7-band automatic transmission 7G-TRONIC PLUS installed here (the only transmission reserved for the Russian market) changes gears with lightning speed, but a small pause after the kickdown is still noticeable, and to a greater extent in gasoline cars. All interior materials are in harmony with each other, every detail is taken into account. The interior decoration is made of leather, wood, and plastic, which are moderately diluted with metal elements and contrasting stitching. Despite the overall sportiness of the car, its design creates a feeling of coziness and comfort. Many will agree that the interior of this car can be called the most successful point relative to the rest of the car.

The driver and front passenger seats are quite spacious, the seats are wide, but there is practically no lateral support, which causes some inconvenience when turning. But instead, expandable pillows are installed. As for the rear seats, they can also be called comfortable, although the central seat is structurally not very good, because the high and wide tunnel will interfere with the person sitting on it. A nice addition was the ability to change the tilt of the backrests rear seat or add them in the ratio 40/20/40.

The driver's seat is equipped with a large wide steering wheel. In some versions it is flattened and has a D-shape. By the way, the severity of its cranking depends on the engine operating mode setting.

Behind the steering wheel, hidden under metal canopies, are the speedometer and tachometer wells, and the space between them is reserved for a color information display. The visibility during a steep climb with a turn may not be complete; in such cases, you can turn to the help of a computer.

Few people will be indifferent to the impressive size of the multimedia screen located above the tablet-type console. Immediately below the screen there are 3 round ventilation ducts and a minimum number of buttons that control various systems, including climate control.

One of the features of the GLC is the panoramic roof, which can bring considerable pleasure to passengers.

This model was the first in the premium SUV segment to use a multi-chamber air suspension. Models are equipped with four-wheel drive and DYNAMIC SELECT system, designed to create comfort and reliability at high speeds. It is difficult to judge to what extent the manufacturer succeeded in this, because... at high speed, the car’s suspension does not always cope even with uneven asphalt, and the driver and passengers risk fully experiencing the “speed bump” near the house.

Another surprise could be a skid rear wheels when driving on relatively off-road terrain at a speed of about 50 km/h. The GLC comes out of a skid easily, but the level of comfort of those in it is noticeably reduced.

Additionally, the car is equipped with a package of off-road modes. When one of them is turned on, the operation of the engine, gearbox, and electronics changes:

  • Offroad;
  • Slippery;
  • Trailer;
  • Climb.

Off-road capabilities include:

  • Underbody protection;
  • Off-road control algorithms;
  • Differential lock;
  • The center differential is asymmetrical with a 45% thrust distribution across front axle and 55% - to the rear.

A technical point that makes one wonder is the reduction in ground clearance of a car supposed to be off-road. If the clearance on the GLK was 210 mm, then on the GLS it became 181 mm. The optional Air Body Control air suspension can compensate for this, increasing the ground clearance by 30-50 mm or reducing it by 15 mm ( sport mode) and 35 mm (Sport+ mode). But when buying a car for the price of a GLC, I would like to have a standard suspension that would provide at least some comfort in certain situations. At least on asphalt roads.

The new model is based on the Modular Rear Architecture (MRA) chassis, which Mercedes fans are already familiar with from the C-Class.

The weight of the crossover has decreased by 80 kg, 50 of which were achieved as a result of the use of steel and aluminum with increased wear resistance in the body structure. Now the vehicle weight is approximately 1735-2025 kg. The aerodynamic drag coefficient has become 0.31, while for GLC it was 0.34.

Perhaps the 2017 Mercedes GLC is one of those cars whose characteristics do not allow us to give a definite answer as to what feelings it evokes. On the one hand, the interior and comfort features are truly top notch. But the technical side of the issue remains open. The manufacturer positions its creation as an “off-road monster,” but test drives cannot agree with it. Of course, no one will drag a car of this class into a swamp to test its all-terrain qualities. But given the not-insignificant price, the buyer has the right to get a car that will at least sail gracefully over speed bumps, holes and potholes, without bothering its driver with the imperfections of the suspension systems.
