Rear number lamps. Repair and modernization of car license plate lighting. How to do everything yourself

The license plate backlight usually consists of (or also known as W5W). This is a regular lamp without a base. Sooner or later they burn out and need to be replaced. So on mine, one is out of order and needs to be replaced. Today I’m posting a small instruction on how to replace it yourself. I would like to note that on many cars the replacement occurs in a similar way, so it will be useful to everyone...

The lamps need to be changed, otherwise the lighting looks “poor”, half the room is illuminated, and half is not! YES, the traffic police officers don’t like it either, but why provoke them once again.

Bug and lamps

When the “backlight” burns out on the AVEO, “CODE 24” occurs, you need to disassemble the flashlight and change the element. I would like to immediately note that when installing the LED lamp, the error also remained, although it was lit, it is clear that its voltage or “amperage” is too low, so the on-board computer does not see it! Please take note. If you set it to “normal”, no errors will occur.

So I went to the auto parts store and bought the most common version, that is, "T10" without LEDs. I didn’t buy super brands, I bought a proven OSRAM, the previous one was on for several years, and everything was fine. In general, the issue price is about 25 rubles.

DIY replacement

As usual, they are mounted in the “niche” in front of the license plate - these are two built-in flashlights. ON various cars they are attached in different ways, some are screwed on - this was the case on some VAZ models, others are simply inserted into latches - this is practiced on many foreign cars (I have exactly this option).

To remove it, you just need to pick it up with a screwdriver, but be careful, because if you bend the wrong corner, you can simply break it. Read the forums for your model, most likely people have already changed it. For me, this corner is located closer to the middle of the trunk lid, or to the opening handle; we just hook it up and pull out the flashlight.

It is covered with a casing, which protects it from dirt getting inside. Now we need to unscrew the lamp mount and pull it out of the socket.

Of course, many readers may say “why do we need this easy instruction”? Guys - “need”, some newcomers almost begin to remove the casing, although everything is elementary here. It is also important to hook the flashlight on the right side, otherwise you will simply break it. It really comes out effortlessly.

Toyota Corolla - reliable quality car. Japanese assembly the car will not cause any problems to the car owner for many years. If you are dealing with other manufacturers, then depending on your luck. There are natural breakdowns due to wear and tear. For example, a rear license plate lamp.

Is it possible to replace it yourself?

You can change the light bulbs in the license plate lights yourself. The best option lighting is an LED bulb that is not afraid of moisture and small mechanical shocks. The manufacturer installs two lighting lamps. Some amateurs are not satisfied with them because they produce weak light. They are upgrading it with LED strips. License plate illumination is required. The choice of lighting color for most Russian citizens is limited to white and yellow.

Requirements for rear license plate illumination

According to traffic rules, on the territory of the Russian Federation, the state registration license plate of a car must be clearly readable at a distance of 20 meters, both in daylight and in the dark. Room lighting is required. A fine will be imposed for the absence of a lighting lamp, its breakdown, or contamination. This is an external lighting device and the general requirements for lighting devices and reflectors apply to it. The driver will be fined or warned for the complete absence of license plate illumination if at least one lamp does not work, even if all letters and numbers are fully visible.

How to change a light bulb

Answer to the question “How to remove license plate lights on a Toyota Corolla?” is not difficult. To change the light bulb, you need to open the trunk, examine the back door, and you will have to remove the panel fastenings.

When changing lamps, it is advisable to observe the sequence of arrangement of wires in the bundle and the correct sealing of the joint. The manufacturer uses 12V 5W bulbs to illuminate the license plate. Difficulties often arise in how to replace a light bulb. It is quite difficult to pull it out, it takes some effort. Just pull. The same goes for installing a new light bulb. You need to take it by the base and press until your fingers go deep inside the lantern.

Why does the rear license plate lamp often burn out?

Perhaps due to the increased humidity, the cartridge or antennae have rusted inside. It is necessary to install a new one or clean and replace the conventional incandescent lamp with an LED lamp that is insensitive to moisture.

Long-term shaking, off-road driving, and bumpy roads shorten the service life of standard lamps.

The lighting suffers due to a blown fuse, voltage drops in electrical circuit car. The chain may break due to natural wear and tear. These damages can be determined using an ohmometer.

The fuse responsible for the license plate light is called “Tail” 10A. If it burns out, the dimensions will stop lighting.

If, after lightly tapping the rear license plate light, the light comes on, it means there was a bad contact or it was dirty, you need to clean it.

There is also a nuance with the number plate illumination. Normally, during the day it lights up if the trunk is open. When opening the car using the key fob, make sure that you do not open it along with the interior doors. Many car enthusiasts complain about the ever-burning license plate light, which does not go out after 5 or 30 minutes until you turn off the car and remove the key from the ignition. It's all about the trunk lock: either the limit switch is stuck, or the car was opened twice with the key fob, or the chip contains a program for opening all the doors and trunk with one click. Constantly glowing lamp It often burns out, and the battery also runs out at the most opportune moment.

In order to change the license plate light bulb on a car, you need to remember some of the rules. First of all, you can install it yourself only for the license plate light, which is located at the back. To do this, it is recommended to use LEDs with lenses, as they illuminate the license plate better and, according to the law, make it possible to see the license plate more clearly. Although lamps of a wide variety of colors are commercially available, the law does not allow many of them to be used in practice.

Backlight for rear license plate

According to traffic rules, at dusk the rear license plate must be illuminated with a yellowish or white light. This will not only help determine the vehicle's license plate number if necessary, but also show its direction of travel. If the license plate glows blue or red or bright LEDs, this could trigger an emergency. Since at night the perception of the driver driving behind may change.

Work for specialists

Not all drivers, faced with the problem of a burnt-out light bulb on the rear license plate illumination, try to do the work themselves. Sometimes an obstacle may be the need to remove the trim inside the trunk or remove plastic rivets - many are afraid of breaking them. It is not always possible to remove the lampshade, or the wires are quite short and it is almost impossible to get to the light bulb. In such cases, it is better to turn to professionals.

Rear license plate illumination is a mandatory attribute of every car. For keeping this external light device in a faulty condition or in a condition that does not comply with the law, several types of administrative penalties are provided: warning, fine, deprivation of rights. This article will tell you what a rear license plate light should be like, how to modernize it and what rules should be followed.

Legal aspects

In accordance with the regulations of the Rules Road Traffic(Traffic Regulations) every car must have a rear license plate light that is activated when turned on side lights. This external light device must be turned on while the vehicle is moving at night. In this case, the brightness of the lamps must be sufficient for the inspector to be able to identify the state. car number from a distance of 20 meters. The absence of illumination or an unreadable car number for any reason is regarded as a violation and, in accordance with Article 12.2 Part 1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation, entails a warning or a fine of 500 rubles.

The situation can be corrected and thereby improve the illumination of the registration plate by upgrading the standard lights. The most common way is to install LED light sources: modules, rulers, strips. However, this innovation can be regarded as a change in the design of the car with all the ensuing consequences.

The Appendix to the Traffic Regulations of the Russian Federation states that it is prohibited to make changes to the design of a vehicle without permission from the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate of the Russian Federation (clause 7.18 - Other design elements). This point can be interpreted as follows. Firstly, if the car is not involved in road traffic (not in use), then the violation cannot be detected. Secondly, if the changes made have been certified by the traffic police and have documentary evidence, then the modernization was carried out according to the law.

GOST 8769-75 (updated on August 1, 2013) in paragraph 2.8.2 states that the rear registration plate of the car must be illuminated by traffic white light. According to this clause, a ban is automatically established on illuminating the license plate with any other light, with the exception of shades of white. It turns out that the bright and rich colors of LEDs (blue, red, green) according to the law cannot be used in organizing rear license plate illumination. They can add ambiguity and confuse drivers of vehicles following behind.

This violation is interpreted by the inspector under Article 12.5 Part 1 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation with a warning or an administrative fine of 500 rubles. Another thing is the backlighting of the front license plate. According to all regulatory documents, it should be absent.

Penalty for installing state lighting. numbers in front will be more strict - deprivation of rights for 6–12 months. with confiscation of lighting fixtures (Article 12.5 Part 3).

Taking into account the current standards and rules, we come to the conclusion that it is possible to convert the rear license plate lighting to LED with your own hands, but without unnecessary fanaticism. The main thing is not to attract attention officials too bright a light, illuminating not only the sign, but also part of the road surface, and do not make a multi-colored decoration out of the car license plate illumination.

Ways to modernize license plate lighting

The spiral bulbs used in rear license plate lights are easiest to replace with similar LED bulbs. In the standard C5W base you can buy LED lamps of different sizes: from to COB matrices. Their main advantage is that they do not cause errors in on-board computer. Prices for the kit vary greatly and depend on the type of LEDs installed, their power and manufacturer. On average, 2 pieces can be purchased for $5. The standard license plate backlight can be easily replaced with ready-made LED modules specifically designed for this purpose. Their geometric dimensions exactly repeat the standard lampshades, that is, there is no need to redo the fastenings. The cost of a set of two budget series modules is $10-15. A cheaper option is license plate lighting based on a sealed LED strip with IP67 or IP68. In this case, you don’t even have to dismantle the standard lights. The LED strip is glued over the state. number or along its perimeter onto a clean, grease-free base. All that is required from the driver is to switch the power from standard lamps to the LED strip, observing the polarity and ensuring the tightness of the contacts.

License plate illumination, which is a mandatory attribute of cars, often raises questions among drivers related to possible changes or upgrades in its installation. So, according to GOST, you need to stick to illuminating the license plate of the rear of the car, while avoiding illuminating the front number.

If the light above the car’s “mini-passport” does not light up, or the lighting does not meet the standards, the driver of the vehicle, when traffic police inspectors discover these violations, is subject to a state fine. To avoid penalties, you should be fully aware of how to properly install and operate the lighting fixture.

Regulatory aspects

The Regulations of the Road Traffic Regulations state that every car must be equipped with special lighting equipment for the rear of the car, capable of being switched on when the side lights are operating. Accordingly, it must be activated in the dark so that the traffic police inspector can easily distinguish the symbols of the vehicle’s “mini-passport” from a distance of at least 20 meters.

The fine for the lack of illumination of the rear license plate and, accordingly, its unreadability is 500 rubles.

Possibility of losing driver's license for a period of 6-12 months with confiscation of the lighting device is also present. The owner of a vehicle may be subject to such punishment for illuminating the front registration plate, since according to regulatory documents it must be absent.

Improved lighting

License plate lighting is not a problem; it can be implemented by upgrading the standard lights. Today, LEDs are most often installed in the form of strips, rulers and modules. However, going overboard with the number of LED items can be regarded as a change in the design of the vehicle.

To avoid punishment, you should remember two things:

  • Firstly, a violation in the coverage of government registration number can only be proven if the vehicle is in service.
  • Secondly, changes that have been certified by the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate cannot be considered illegal.

About the intensity of the backlight and the permitted colors of LEDs

According to GOST, the light of rear registration plates must be white or yellow, or shades thereof. Thus, any other color of lighting may be regarded as a violation and subject to a corresponding fine of 3,000 rubles, since colored LEDs can confuse drivers following and provoke a traffic accident.

Taking into account the standards, it is possible to change the tonality and saturation of the lighting. However, this must be done without attracting the inspector’s attention by using too bright a light, which leaves a mark on the road surface, as well as using excess quantity room lighting in other colors.

Lighting Retrofit Attributes

The spiral number illumination used in factory flashlights can be replaced with similar LED bulbs of a more powerful spectrum. The standard size of the LED for a light bulb with a standard base ranges from SMD5050 to COB matrices. Main positive quality Such light bulbs are compatible with the on-board computer (BC), that is, it will not generate errors when installing LEDs. Lamp prices depend both on the desired power and on the manufacturer. On average, a set of LED devices consisting of two lamps can be purchased for around 300-400 rubles.

For illumination of registration symbols with an LED module, the vehicle owner will have to pay at least 600-800 rubles. But this has an advantage LED device is also available: their geometric dimensions exactly repeat the standard lampshades, i.e. no need to redo the fastenings.

A budget-friendly way to solve the problem of license plate illumination is to stick an LED strip above the number or around the perimeter. It is important to remember that it can only be glued to a place that is free of dirt and oil, otherwise the durability of the tape is not guaranteed.

In conclusion, I would like to say that you should strictly adhere to the rules for operating the car and treat the car's lighting fixtures properly. Before leaving, always check that the headlights are working properly so that both the rear and front license plate lights are functioning - this will ensure easy readability of the license plates. Take prompt action to resolve any problems.
