It is already clear that I would like to see a car that has the characteristics described above (suspension, engine, body geometry, etc.) in a 4x4 version. The all-wheel drive version was announced by the manufacturer for a long time; the start of production was planned for 2016. Judging by the description, the SUV was supposed to have similar technical characteristics and design, and the Renault Duster was supposed to serve as the basis for it.

However, according to the latest data, the project has been frozen. There are no plans to release a car with all-wheel drive. Therefore, there is no need to guess what kind of drive the new product will have. Lada X Ray Cross will have front wheel drive and the same dimensions, but the only difference is the presence of basic roof rails and a plastic body kit.

Pros and cons

The advantages of the car include the following performance characteristics:

What is the ground clearance of the Tolyatti crossover?

This suspension is not only simple, but also allows the manufacturer to easily change the vehicle's ground clearance by releasing a “package for bad roads” in the form of extended springs and shock absorbers.

The recipe for creating a high and affordable single-wheel drive car has already been tested on the Sandero Stepway, and was repeated on the Lada using the same B0 platform: the clearance of the X-Ray was the same 195 mm as for a non-wheel drive car. rear wheels the crossover is more than enough - it can get off the asphalt successfully, and higher ground clearance is only needed to conquer serious off-road conditions.

However, remembering the successful creation of the all-wheel drive Duster on this platform, one might wonder if Lada is planning something similar? Indeed, the all-wheel drive XRay, based on the Duster units, was announced several times - either as the Lada X-Ray Cross or as the Lada XRay X. Alas, the release dates for new items are constantly being pushed back.

Considering the unification across many nodes of the XRay family with Renault cars, we should expect that the X-Ray Cross ground clearance will be similar or close to this figure for the Duster, that is, 205-210 mm.

Car compared to competitors

How can a car with the Lada nameplate compare to similarly priced models from other brands? With its closest relatives bearing a diamond on the hood, it is already clear - Logan and Sandero are 10 mm lower, Duster is the same amount higher, and Stepway is a twin brother. What is the ground clearance of cars of other brands?

If we take cars of a similar class, the market can offer the following options:

  • Nissan Terrano - in its current incarnation this is the same Duster with its 210 mm.
  • Lifan X60 is only 179 mm, and to this we must add the widespread prejudice about Chinese “quality”.
  • The Lifan X50 with its 200 mm figure as a crossover is noticeably better than the X60, but the lack of even engine and gearbox protection in the basic configuration seriously limits the capabilities of the car out of the box.
  • Although the Lada Kalina Cross is not a direct competitor to the XRay, 200 mm to the crankcase protection and a lower price can still sway the buyer in its favor.
  • The Suzuki Vitara is not only more expensive, but also 10mm lower than the XRay.
  • Suzuki SX4 is lower than "Rey" in any version: if four-wheel drive vehicle the difference is only 5 mm, then the front-wheel drive loses all 20 mm to the XRay.

Not just a single number

The cross-country ability of a car consists of many parameters, and it cannot be described only by numbers of body geometry. How does the new product from Togliatti really behave outside of city roads?

When adapting the B0 platform to the new model, engineers changed the steering settings. The exterior design of the Lada X Ray is truly stylish and is part of a new style that will be applied to other cars of the company, and will also be improved. The front part is made in the form of the letter “X”, which is emphasized thanks to powerful chrome elements. Perhaps the most expensive and interesting element is the headlights. They have an interesting beautiful pattern and quite powerful filling. The radiator grille is wide with a mesh structure. A characteristic feature of the Xray, which should be carried over to other future Lada new products, is the X-shaped front part of the body, developed by former Mercedes-Benz and Volvo designer Steve Mattin (a number of automotive experts believe that it was borrowed from Mitsubishi). At the front, the hatchback is decorated with the latest headlights with LED DRLs, larger than the headlights Lada Vesta, and on the side there is a stamping made in the shape of the letter “X”. You can distinguish the Xray from its French “brother” on the Renault Sandero platform by the absence of too flat body parts, a high glazing line and a sloping roof, as well as a more spacious luggage compartment with an electric opening button, a huge gas filler flap and the presence of a third tinted glass in the top configurations


On the rear, which is far from outstanding in size, you can see the letters L A D A that are not widely spaced from each other (in Vesta the distance between the letters is clearly greater) and taillights with a rather controversial design. Regarding rims, then in the “base” they are 16-inch, and 17-inch ones are offered for an additional fee. The overall dimensions are unimpressive, and the car, alas, does not create the impression of a city crossover - for this purpose it is too small and narrow. However, in terms of suspension performance and driving sensations, the Xray is still a bit reminiscent of an SUV, and even a specific one - the Opel Mokka.

Design

Adaptation to Russian conditions

Already after the first trip to the Xray, you are convinced that this is nothing more than a small workhorse, which definitely beats the “common platform” Sandero in price and is not afraid of our bad roads, even despite the lack of all-wheel drive. Unfortunately, the appearance of an all-wheel drive transmission is not expected, since to implement it in the B0 “trolley” the manufacturer would have to completely redo rear suspension, as in the case of Duster, since the elastic beam, gearbox and cardan shaft do not fit well, and this is fraught at great expense for a car plant. The declared ground clearance is 195 mm, but in fact it is approximately 185 mm, which, in principle, is quite normal for operation in difficult Russian conditions. It is also good that the bottom of the car is flat - no protruding muffler pipes are visible, engine compartment It is reliably protected by iron, and the sills are located at the optimal height, so that the body is not so easily damaged on a country dirt road or a snowy road.

Comfort

The car doors open quite wide, which ensures comfortable entry into the cabin. The second row is a bit cramped, but the rear sofa itself is very comfortable. The front is more spacious, the first row seats borrowed from Renault are distinguished by high-quality finishing, a short seat and the presence of a heating function. The driver's seat is, for the most part, well organized, but the driver's door glass does not have automatic opening in any of the trim levels. The interior is completely finished with high-quality plastic and decorated in dark and light colors. The steering wheel is also made of plastic, and the front panel with stylish air duct deflectors is made using seamless technology.


The Xray's door handles are more expensive than those of the Renault Sandero, and the interior of the doors continues the X theme, as do the seats. New shift lever robotic box gears are pleasing to the eye with chrome trim (for modifications with a five-speed AMT “robot”). U dashboard The Xray wells are the same as those of Sandero, and the graphics and fonts are VAZ. The multimedia complex with a touch screen and rear video view is glare-free and guarantees excellent image quality - at the level of Volkswagen and Nissan. It is noteworthy that the sound of this “multimedia” is an order of magnitude better than that of Vesta. The entry-level configuration includes a regular air conditioner, while the top-end configuration includes automatic climate control, which is more efficient than the Vesta climate control system. In addition, the cabin has a cooled glove box, narrow cup holders, an eyeglass case and an Era-Glonass emergency notification button on the ceiling.


In the basic version, only two airbags are expected - driver and front passenger with a shutdown function, as well as two rear headrests (expensive versions have three) and a set of electronic assistants, including:


The basic Xray is equipped with a 2DIN audio system with radio (FM/AM with RDS function), CD player, four speakers, AUX and USB input for connecting mobile devices, Bluetooth and Handsfree. But the top versions have a multimedia complex with a seven-inch color touchscreen, six speakers and navigation. Thanks to this complex, you can view the image from the rear view camera, listen to your favorite music and talk on the phone without being distracted from driving. Overall, this is a completely modern infotainment system with an intuitive interface and quite nice graphics.

Lada X-Ray Technical characteristics

The range of hatchback engines includes VAZ petrol fours with fuel injection electronically controlled. We are talking about the familiar 1.6-liter engine producing 106 hp. and 148 Nm of peak torque, and about a completely new 1.8-liter unit that develops 122 hp. and 170 Nm, is comfortable with 92 gasoline and in reality consumes 8-8.2 liters. fuel per 100 kilometers, while its passport expense averages 6.8 l/100 km. Both engines are combined with a five-speed manual transmission, but the 122-horsepower engine can also be paired with a 5-speed AMT robot with one clutch, which replaced the torque converter box. The most powerful modification with a robotic transmission accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds, and its top speed is 186 km/h, which is good indicator for a model of this class.
