Who makes Datsun? Datsun: the history of brand creation. Where is the sedan assembled?

With the advent of the new Japanese small car Datsun on-Do ( Datsun on-DO) a dilemma arose: whether to give preference to a semi-foreign car or opt for the VAZ Lada Granta ( Lada Granta)? In this review, we will try to determine which of them - Datsun or Granta - will prevail on the vast expanses of Russian highways in the near future.

Datsun on-DO and Lada Granta cars – are they the same in everything?

The thing is that when creating Datsun on-DO, it was Granta that was taken as the basis. It should be understood that they do not have such big differences, especially from the technical side. Although, of course, each of them has individual characteristics. A detailed examination of each of the characteristics will help us understand Datsun from Grants.

Comparative characteristics

General Similarities

Both cars have a number of common similarities, despite the fact that they belong to model lines different manufacturers. The main one is the use of the same platform for the two models, which originally belonged to Grant. Both cars are designed for 5 passenger seats.

Both Datsun and Granta are perfectly adapted to the conditions of Russian roads and have a ground clearance of more than 16 cm. Thanks to this ground clearance, bumps and potholes on the roads do not create major obstacles for driving.

Test drive of a Lada Granta car:

A significant disadvantage of the Datsun on-DO sedan is the lack of design options for installing an automatic transmission. Automation will be installed and will work in conjunction with an eight-valve engine, since Datsuns will not be equipped with sixteen-valve engines at all. Therefore, if the choice for a domestic car enthusiast is a 16-valve Granta liftback or a Datsun hatchback with 8 valves, then the obvious favorite here will be LADA.

Chassis architecture

For Japanese developers, the primary task was to achieve complete adaptation of Datsun to all Russian roads. And although the architecture itself was left the same as in Grant, having undergone a complete reconfiguration, the behavior on the road of the first model is significantly different from the second. The quality of stabilizers, shock absorbers and springs in the Japanese and Russian models is absolutely the same, only Datsun has slightly changed the design of these parts. Changes and improvements have also been made braking system. The vacuum booster and pedal assembly have been improved.

Soundproofing and additional options

So here there is something to compare the Granta and the Datsun, since the latter has significantly surpassed the Lada Granta. The Japanese have improved the characteristics of the material from which mats for the floor and engine shield, arches are cut rear wheels equipped with felt fender liners, additional sound-absorbing plugs installed. Also, to reduce noise levels, the Datsun on-DO has been modified in the shape of the exterior mirrors, gearbox and exhaust system.

Test drive a Datsun on-DO car:

There are no significant differences between the models in the basic set of options. But among the additional ones, Datsun will be equipped with Isofix mounts, a driver's airbag, and electrically heated front seats.

Conclusions

It is quite difficult to give a definite answer to the question of which is better, Granta or Datsun. Here, the decisive role is played by the personal preferences of the car enthusiast, the presence of an automatic or manual transmission, noise in the cabin, price and other factors. Although the Datsun on-DO has a large number of quality improvements and additions, more modern production technologies, it is still not without certain shortcomings. For the most part, your choice will depend on minor details, since in general the cars are exactly the same. If you found the article useful, share your opinion by leaving a comment below.

A revived Japanese brand car company Datsun, the rights to which belong to Nissan, has now become oriented towards the production of affordable cars. The debut for the company was a new affordable sedan Datsun on-DO, developed specifically for Russian consumers.

The new product is designed on the platform, but the design was carried out by Nissan specialists. They decided to borrow the body from a Russian car. Power units were also borrowed, which, for natural reasons, were modified. The entire Datsun model range.

Based on the company’s plans, they planned to create a network of car dealerships to sell the vehicle, and the cars could be serviced at Nissan technical centers. Datsun on-DO can be classified as a niche of economy class cars. Based on his position, he is able to displace Russian and Chinese manufacturers in this category, and even used cars purchased in European countries.

It is not clear why the Russian auto giant decided to produce a direct competitor to Granta and Kalina during a decline in sales of its own cars. Most likely, AvtoVAZ’s behavior makes sense, and even a slight decrease in profits from the sale of its cars can be compensated in another way.

History of creation

This is not the first time that the Japanese company Nissan is looking at the huge Russian automobile market. It was precisely for this direction that they decided to revive the Datsun brand. But then a logical question arises: why? This decision can be explained quite logically - between Nissan’s Almera and VAZ’s Granta and Kalina, there is a fairly large niche that no one occupies.

Therefore, the model was designed to cover this price segment. Many Russian motorists have the funds to buy much the best cars than Russian cars, but they are not enough to purchase a Japanese vehicle.

In addition to the market future, issues of prestige also played a big role in the company’s recovery: Nissan could not decide to provide its own name inexpensive car, so as not to lose face in the niche of expensive premium cars.

The sedan itself is assembled on one of the conveyors in Togliatti, where components of its own production are used. But it cannot do without imported spare parts. Based on such a successful start official sales, the company decided to increase production. Taking all this into account, the production of many units, components and parts will eventually be mastered at Russian enterprises.

Exterior

As already mentioned, the car is similar to the Lada Kalina 2 not only in technical aspects, but also in visual parameters - if you look very quickly, you can even confuse them. It is logical to conclude that thanks to the use of more modern light optics, a different configuration of wings, bumpers with bright aerodynamic elements and other new parts, Lada

Kalina is noticeably inferior in exterior design, because the Datsun on-DO looks more serious and stylish, even compared to the VAZ Granta. In order to improve the external attractiveness of the car, the dimensions were artificially increased by means of a rear overhang of 80 mm.

The nose of the body is decorated with a large trapezoidal radiator grille with a wide chrome frame and a filigree mesh with large cells. You can also pay attention to the small, strict headlights, the embossed hood with stampings, the modest bumper, trimmed at the bottom and complemented by auxiliary holes for the fog lights, and the large, streamlined rear-view mirrors. The side body of the Datsun on-DO shows off its unique fenders and the truly immodestly sized rear of the car.

Similarities with Granta

On the new sedan you can see the lines already familiar from the Grant car, along with contours and styling, however most of them are more expressive and modern. The rear of the compact sedan is not lacking in charm and attractiveness.

Unique lampshades for light-enhancing equipment, a large trunk lid, which provides comfortable access to the trunk, and, finally, a lean rear bumper. The Japanese managed to make the new elements neat and stylish, as well as modernize them and give them solidity.

The model looks nicer than its direct domestic competitor, which allows it to win this competition, winning the attention of car enthusiasts from Russia and beyond. Despite the fact that the appearance of the vehicle is quite budget-friendly, however, with all this, the sedan looks quite attractive, which cannot be fully said about its domestic rival.

Interior

The interior of the new Japanese car is designed on the Lada Granta interior platform and Lada Kalina, however, is very different from them. You can feel it almost everywhere - the center console, dashboard and so on. However, the steering wheel, seats and door card design were transferred to the Japanese from Lada. The torpedo looks pretty good.

This is achieved with the help of considerable volume and waves that smoothly flow across the top of the panel. The instrument panel has a familiar layout and on-board computer display, however, the chrome finish makes the instruments more solid and presentable. The nozzles of the ventilation system, located on the side of the dashboard, retained their shape and location, like those of the Russian “brother”, but the central deflectors received a slightly different shape.

The console located in the center has a correct, ergonomically adjusted shape with the audio and climate system settings units located on it. All the keys and knobs on it are comfortable, you quickly get used to everything - everything is intuitive and readable. If we talk about the interior dimensions of the Japanese sedan, it remains the same, like the Lada Granta.

According to the manufacturers, the cabin is designed for 5 people. In reality, only two people can sit comfortably in the back, and the third seat is not designed for long trips. In addition to the mentioned configurations designed to increase the level of comfort, the Datsun on-DO also has electric drive mirrors with a heating function.

In a more advanced configuration, the car boasts a frontal airbag for the front passenger and side airbags, a multimedia system with a display that supports touch input, a Cityguide navigation system, heating windshield and alloy wheels designed for 14 or 15 inches.

Despite the large luggage compartment, it can be further increased by folding the rear seats if necessary, which will result in more than doubling the free space.

Improvements compared to Granta

The manufacturers also assured that the noise and sound insulation of the interior has been radically improved, the calibration of the springs along with shock absorbers and the technical properties of the suspension themselves have changed. Therefore, the inside of a Japanese car is better and more comfortable than in Russian-made cars.

If we talk about the salon, here is the design team Japanese company tried to combine Japanese asceticism with the breadth of the Russian soul. It all starts with appearance and ends modern materials execution - this is significantly different from the domestic version, and in better side. It’s not for nothing that many people call the salon good quality. If you take individual elements, then they were able to fit well together, and they are perfectly secured.

Another undoubted advantage is the massive luggage compartment, the volume of which is about 530 liters. But there are moments that eloquently indicate that this is still budget model– the seat is not height adjustable, and the range of adjustments is not that large.

The limited functionality of the car will not allow you to get completely comfortable behind the wheel. In addition, there are no options or armrests for the seats installed in the rear of the Japanese sedan.

Specifications

Power unit

The engine on the Datsun on-DO is a four-cylinder petrol VAZ 1.6 liter in volume. The power of this “heart” develops to 82 horsepower. This aspirated engine has four cylinders arranged in a row and a lightweight connecting rod and piston group.

The power unit has an electrically controlled distributed fuel injection system. The motor fully meets Euro-4 standards.

Despite the VAZ origin of the engine, they were able to seriously modify it, and Japanese engineers were involved in the modernization. The motor operates on high octane gasoline AI-95. Like the domestic version, here injection system fuel supply.

The power unit is equipped with moving parts made from new alloys with improved weight characteristics. Thanks to this, it was possible to increase power along with torque while saving displacement.

Transmission

Installed manual transmission gears received an Atsumitec cable drive and shift forks from Shaeffler (manufacturer: Germany). A dry single-plate clutch is provided. As a separate option, you can install 4-band automatic transmission Jatco gearshift.

The manual transmission allows the sedan to reach the first hundred in 12.9 seconds, and its top speed is set at 165 kilometers per hour. If we talk about the “automatic” box, it loses 1.4 seconds to the “mechanics” in acceleration to 100 km/h, however, it is superior in the maximum speed limit at 1 km/h. According to the passport, for every 100 kilometers, the Datsun fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 7.4-7.7 liters of fuel (depending on the version of the car).

Suspension

In order to adapt the car to not very good roads new gas-filled shock absorbers, as well as vacuum brake boosters, were developed for it and subsequently installed. Besides, ground clearance was increased to 185 mm. When loaded it is slightly smaller – 168 mm.

The Datsun on-DO received an independent suspension with McPherson struts in front and a semi-independent torsion beam on the rear axle. The suspension was retuned, some silent blocks were replaced with more durable ones, however, in general, this is already a familiar VAZ solution with its advantages and disadvantages.

Steering

Driving the Japanese sedan is quite easy, thanks to electric power steering, which is even included as standard.

Brake system

The front wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and the rear wheels are equipped with simple drum brakes, which is typical for VAZ-made cars. Handbrake mechanical.

It is dual-circuit with cross distribution of forces. The Datsun on-DO reviews have already collected quite good reviews and, in general, this is deserved. The car is made with high quality, which makes you feel good about it.

Dimensions

As a result, the Datsun on-DO four-door sedan measures 4,337 mm in length, 1,700 mm in width and 1,500 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2,476 mm. The ground clearance has been increased to 185 mm, which will allow you to drive confidently even on a broken country road.

And with a fully loaded car, with five people, 50 kilograms in the luggage compartment, the ground clearance will be only 168 mm, which is very good, considering the quality of our roads.

Safety

The car is already equipped with a driver's front airbag as standard. The middle version already has a pair of airbags, and the top version also has side airbags. Also, among other things, to increase the safety of the “Japanese version of Lada” you can find:

  • Seat belts;
  • Seat belt pretensioners;
  • Belt limiters;
  • Electronic stability control (monitors the angle of rotation of the steering wheel in comparison with the actual course of the car, braking individual wheels if necessary).

The most simple equipment Japanese sedan Datsun ON-DO is equipped with:

  • BAS (emergency braking assistance function);
  • ABS (anti-lock braking system that prevents the wheels from locking during braking);
  • Driver's airbag.

If we talk about the Trust and Dream versions, they are equipped with side and passenger airbags. Moreover, models come with electronic stability control (ESC). Quite humane pricing policy, inherent in a Japanese sedan, does not in any way affect the quality of the passive and active safety of the car.

Theoretical crash test

To date, the Datsun on-DO has not yet been crash tested. However, they checked for safety Lada car Granta, which, as we mentioned earlier, is the prototype of the Japanese car. The debut inspection was carried out by Czech specialists at the TUV SUD laboratory, and the next one was carried out by the Auto Review magazine in 2012.

During research Russian car was able to demonstrate himself properly and achieved a result of 2 stars, in points – 8.4. According to the results, Grant even outperformed Kalina, which suggests that the Datsun on-DO hatchback also lost its points.

During the crash test of the Lada Granta, Japanese representatives were of considerable interest, because at that time they only had plans to create a vehicle based on the Lada. A little later, Takata specialists began developing airbags and seat belts, which once again makes it possible to verify the advantage of the Japanese in a theoretical crash test over the Lada Granta.

Specialists from the Japanese company Nissan said that since it was able to receive 3 stars on the safety scale (9.6 points), then Datsun on-DO will receive no less a rating. The test itself was carried out using the offset frontal collision method.

As a result of the impact, the collision axis passed by the power unit and rushed towards the driver's seat. As for the front and rear doors of the left side of the car, they were opened under the influence of the powerful force of the collision. The door frame in front was deformed, causing the car to lose a point.

Such a malfunction is defined as a loss of integrity and a reduction in the degree of safety according to EuroNCAP standards. Speaking of the steering column, it is worth saying that it has moved inside the car by half a meter and deviated upward by 68 millimeters.

The displacement occurred following the deployment of the airbags. The cabin capsule was able to maintain its structural integrity; only the A-pillar was damaged, which was bent by 70 millimeters. This deviation is normal and indicates acceptable body strength.

The dummy's head did not hit the steering wheel or dashboard thanks to the airbag, which was able to deploy in time. However, there are also shortcomings with similar triggering. The mannequin was thrown onto the side stand, as a result of which it was subjected to an impact that in reality would have caused a concussion or skull injury. Very unusually, however, the standardization of a European company does not record or take into account such side effects during the calculation of the results.

The clutch and brake pedals were moved inside the car by 90 and 120 millimeters. Based on this displacement, they will not cause damage to the legs. The floor of the car was not greatly deformed, and the seats and parts of the interior were not displaced.

As a result, the direct relative of the Japanese sedan, the Lada Granta, scored 8.4 points out of the maximum possible 16. The following received similar ratings: vehicles, How Fiat Albea, Chevrolet Lanos And Hyundai Solaris. Theoretically, the Datsun on-DO is at a similar safety level to these cars.

Yokohama, Japan (March 13, 2014)- Datsun will present its first car for Russia on April 4, 2014 in Moscow. In anticipation of this significant event, and also before the premiere of Datsun on the dynamic Russian market, Datsun publishes a sketch of its model.

The launch of this model is fundamentally important for the global expansion of the brand. For the first time in history, the Datsun brand will be officially represented in Russia.

Today the Russian page of the Datsun website starts working. It has started a countdown until the official launch of the new model. The site will allow visitors to subscribe to the latest brand news. A live broadcast of the presentation on April 4 will also be available for viewing.

About the Datsun brand

In March 2012, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. announced her return Datsun brand, the company's third global brand along with Nissan and Infiniti. The Datsun brand will offer modern, reliable and affordable products to optimistic, active buyers in growing markets. Datsun builds on eight decades of Japanese automotive experience and is an important part of Nissan's DNA. The start of sales of Datsun cars in India, Indonesia, Russia and South Africa is scheduled for 2014.

Datsun brand history

The roots of the Datsun brand go deep into history.

The first car, called the DAT-GO (“DAT Car”), appeared in 1914. DAT is an acronym consisting of the initials of the businessmen who financed the creation of this car - Den (Den), Aoyama (Aoyama) and Takeuchi (Takeuchi). In addition, this abbreviation was consonant with the Japanese word for “alive, mobile.” In campaigns to promote the brand on the market at the beginning of its history, this acronym also stood for Durable, Attractive and Trustworthy.

Nissan

In 1933, the business passed into the hands of Nissan founder Yoshisuke Aikawa, who proposed the concept of “a car for everyone.” Introduced in the early 1930s, lightweight, economical and maneuverable cars aimed at the younger generation of Japanese residents were called Datson (son of DAT). This name was subsequently changed to Datsun. The development of models taking into account the needs of local markets and their mass production turned the dream of the brand founder into reality.

The Datsun on-DO car (correctly spelled this way, and not “un-DO”, “on-DU” or “on-DA”) has a sedan body. Due to its comfort and practicality, Datsun on-DO performs well not only in urban environments, but also beyond. The model firmly established itself in the domestic automobile market in 2015.

As the review shows, the advantages of the sedan are suitable for energetic people with great ambitions.

Where is the sedan assembled?

Datsun on-DO is assembled on an assembly line in Togliatti, and the country of origin is, accordingly, Russia. To develop the model, a separate plant was allocated on the territory of the VAZ factory premises. For the production of Datsun on-DO, the latest welding complexes are used, coupled with robotic welding lines from Kuka. The plant has a robotic painting complex from Eisenmann.

The car is assembled by the hands of our citizens. The plant operates a quality system program of the largest Renault-Nissan alliance and it is inappropriate to talk about hack work. The assembled Datsun on-DO is sent to the finished product site, where more than twenty quality control posts pass. Only after all checks does the manufacturer deliver the car for sale. The plant's employees are seriously motivated to avoid defects in production.

The Japanese have no complaints about the assembly.

Dimensions

According to the description, the length of the Datsun on-DO body is 4337 mm, width - 1700 mm, and height - 1500 mm. The wheelbase of 2476 mm is compensated by the amount of internal space. The car has a fairly high ground clearance of 174 mm. This clearance will not allow you to skid in deep snow. The curb weight of the vehicle is 1160 kg. Luggage compartment allows you to freely transport products and all kinds of small items. The compartment volume is 530 liters.

The Russian-Japanese Datsun on-DO sedan has smooth body lines and stylish classic shapes, which can be easily seen in the photographs below. The exterior style is complemented by spectacular and high-quality details:

  • Six-spoke rims, which are made of light alloy.
  • Fog lights that perfectly complement the car's exterior. They not only emphasize the car’s sculpted hood, but also highlight the impressive bumper.
  • A voluminous radiator grille, which has a stylish chrome edging and a unique cellular structure.

Interior

Inside the Russian-Japanese Datsun on-DO sedan, functionality and ergonomics are clearly visible. The instrument panel is made with high quality and taste. Auto has good review from the inside. As you can see in the photo below, the model’s interior is equipped with everything necessary for long trips:

  • Comfortable seats are trimmed with elegant, wear-resistant material and add additional comfort to the cabin.
  • The practical and multifunctional console greatly facilitates the work with on-board equipment.

Safety

The developers of the on-DO sedan thought about the means passive safety on the roads and equipped their brainchild with everything necessary: a pillow for the driver, passengers received durable three-point belts, and an ISOFIX mount was installed especially for children. From the basic Access variant upwards the machine has:

  • Anti-lock braking system ABS.
  • System with uniform distribution of EBD brake forces.
  • Reliable and fast braking system BAS.

Color range

The five-seat on-DO is available in six colors. The colors of the bumper, mirror handles and doors are painted depending on the trim level. Young people prefer simple colors of Datsun on-DO, such as black or white. Adult car enthusiasts often choose brown and light blue.

It's Datsun

In the Service, Maintenance, Tuning section, the question is, whose brand of car is Datsun? The best answer given by the author Orik is Datsun - the oldest Japanese brand! This is the first name of the current Nissan. At one time, cars under these brands were produced in parallel for different markets, and then gradually the name "Nissan" replaced "Datsun" - marketing, however... Now The Renault-Nissan-AvtoVAZ alliance decided to revive the Datsun brand as a budget car label. In the hierarchy of the alliance in Russia, the brand occupies a place between Lada and Renault. In each of the markets where the Datsun brand is promoted, its own platform is chosen for its production! Thus, in the markets of India, Indonesia and South Africa, locally assembled Datsun GO based on the Nissan Micra/March is sold. In Russia, to reduce costs, the alliance chose the proven and well-proven “local” Lada Kalina/Granta platform for the Datsun Mi-Do / On-Do .

Where is the Datsun On Do assembled in Russia?

Once upon a time, when the grass was greener and cars were more reliable, there was such a company as Datsun. More precisely, not really a company, but one of the “side” branches of the famous Toyota. This company was engaged in the production of cheap and quality cars. They were widely popular almost all over the world, they were known even in our country. Recently the company found a “second wind”: the “On Do” model was revived especially for Russia. Would you like to know where the Datsun On Do is assembled?

Datsun On Do: where is it assembled in Russia?

Yes, yes, you heard right. This foreign car (and I can’t even call it one) is born on the stocks of... AvtoVAZ! And the history of the Russian Datsun began, no matter how crazy it may sound... With the legendary “Kalina”! The thing is that to assemble this model, the plant’s conveyor was almost completely redone. More precisely, reassembled. It was necessary to achieve such quality that the car could at least to some extent compete with foreign analogues. It must be said that the workers of Togliatti practically succeeded.

Today, when more than ten years have passed since the assembly of the first Kalina, the “new” conveyor makes it possible to produce Grants and other cars, the quality of which is unusually high for a domestic automotive industry. Wait, but what does this have to do with Datsun, the country of origin of which was originally located somewhat to the east? Let's figure it out now.

Adventures of the Japanese in Russia

As is known, in the recent past, the Japanese, like the French, became the owners of a controlling stake in AvtoVAZ. And, if somehow it didn’t work out with the French specialists, then with the Japanese comrades everything turned out great. It was they who proposed a new idea: assembling the legendary brand at the facilities of a domestic plant! The idea was picked up by domestic specialists, and now Volzhsky’s equipment automobile plant successfully produces components for “Japanese Russian foreign cars”.

The car received a monocoque body of modern proportions (length - 3910 mm, wheelbase - 2280 mm) and an independent double-wishbone front suspension. The car's name, "Blue Bird", refers to the play by Maurice Maeterlinck.

  • In September, the production division of Nissan Mexicana S.A. was formed. de C.V. Five years later it will begin producing cars.
