How to make a snowmobile from a scooter with your own hands. How to assemble a homemade moped from improvised materials? Mini scooter - what is it

The idea itself was read from motorcycle magazines. In them, I saw that it was possible to buy a caterpillar engine, and convert an ordinary motorcycle into a kind of homemade snowmobile. And since there is an opportunity to convert a motorcycle into a snowmobile with your own hands, then why not try to do this with a scooter.

At the very beginning, I had the idea to use a part from the usual Buranovskaya caterpillar as a caterpillar engine (photo 1). But he couldn’t find the old track from the Buran snowmobile, he didn’t buy a new one - it’s expensive to buy a whole one for the sake of one quarter of the track.

I had to contact a specialized company and buy a rubber caterpillar from them, and even a plastic ski.

In the pre-thought-out and verified design of the scooter and at the same time the snowmobile, the main thing was that the scooter in warm weather should remain a scooter and only become an additional snowmobile in winter. That is, the process of converting a scooter into a snowmobile and back should be very simple - remove the ski and tracks and put the wheels back.

I don’t have a milling or lathe, so I used all the components and parts either ready-made, store-bought, or those that you can do with your own hands and with ordinary tools and.

In a store selling snowmobiles, I bought a leading sprocket again from Buran. I also had to buy wheels from a children's scooter, and two wheels with bearings from a garden cart.

Now for the power of the snowmobile scooter.

In the transmission of the scooter, the gear ratio provides for movement on asphalt at a speed of 40 to 60 kilometers per hour.

It is quite clear that when driving on a snowy road, the load on the engine immediately increases, and it may well be that its power is not enough. In addition, it is dangerous to “fly” through snow and ice at such a speed. Therefore, the gear ratio had to be changed by replacing driving wheel scooter wheel with a smaller size, from the map.

To make such changes to the design, from an unusable moped rim I cut out a drum (with splines) for the drive shaft. And I drilled holes in it that will help fix a smaller disk in it. The result is shown in photo No. 2.

I solved the problem with the caterpillar slipping off the wheel and its possible slipping in the following way: I made it with my own hands from ordinary plastic pipes for the hook. In the subsequent assembly, they will go into the tracks of the snowmobile scooter. You can see them in photo #3.

Since it is very difficult to find a tire with a circumference suitable for the number of steps on the caterpillar, I had to do the following.

I made a kind of bandage of the required length from a metal strip. Then he marked equal distances on it, corresponding to the step on the caterpillar, and fixed on them the hooks previously made of plastic pipes. To attach the hooks to the metal, I took M6 bolts. (Photo No. 4). Then I fixed the bandage on the wheel with the same M6 bolts. The result is visible in photo #5.

Thus, with my own hands, I made a kind of soft sprocket, which will be the leading one for the sprocket of a homemade snowmobile scooter.

As a driven sprocket, the following design was made - the drive sprocket from Buran was fastened with M8 bolts to the bearing-equipped wheels from the garden cart, which I mentioned above. As an axis, I used a stud with an M10 thread / The design can be seen in photo No. 10.

Snowmobile scooter frame.

Ramu made their metal pipes and corners (Photo # 7)

The frame is made with arbitrary dimensions - it all depends on the length and width of the caterpillar you have chosen and what dimensions your scooter is.

As I mentioned above, I had to buy a plastic ski for a winter scooter - doing it yourself would take too much time and effort, but it is not expensive. In principle, if you wish, you can, of course, do without buying it, but simply make a wooden one with your own hands, and be sure to equip it with a metal skate so that the scooter, moving through the snow, is better controlled.

I attached the ski to the moped fork with the help of homemade rack(photo 17-18), for greater safety, the left and right sides of the fork work independently (i.e. have two degrees of freedom of movement). With this design, our homemade snowmobile can turn in any direction and the ski will not rise, but will remain the entire plane on the surface of the snow.

The body of the scooter made of plastic in the cold becomes very fragile, in addition, its design is equipped with pockets into which snow is packed, which contributes to an increase in the weight of the snowmobile scooter, and hence a drop in power when driving.

For winter, the casing was made minimal. It will be located only above the caterpillar, but you need a large platform in order to have somewhere to put your feet in overall winter shoes, well, for decoration, I wanted to make a shield for installing it on a snowmobile fork, which is easily equipped with a windshield for moving over a long distance or in the wind and snow.

In principle, it is not so difficult to make a casing for installation on a caterpillar with your own hands, the main thing is to make a template for fiberglass (matrix).

For this, from polycarbonate, which is increasingly used for, or plexiglass or the like. materials (if only they were of comparable size), first cut out the sidewall (Photo No. 19)

We turn it over and lay it on a large sheet - it will be the wall of the template. Then we fix the plastic corners with hot glue around the perimeter of the side wall.

Next we need a strip of flexible plastic. The dimensions must correspond to the dimensions of the manufactured casing.

Now we proceed to assemble the template (matrix), for which we fix the panel, the bottom and the prepared sidewall with glue. We seal the joints with plasticine. The template for making the casing is ready.

Now cut the fiberglass, and, smearing the pieces of fiberglass with epoxy, put it on the template.

After 24 hours, disassemble the template, cut off the excess fiberglass, paint it and the casing for the homemade snowmobile scooter is ready.

The platform for the feet was made in the same way, with one exception - silver was added to the epoxy for decorative purposes.

The main work is done - it remains only to put everything together and homemade snowmobile scooter handmade is ready.

Do-it-yourself snowmobile scooter - photo for the article

Of course, our self-made snowmobile scooter is not suitable for driving in very deep snow, the power and width of the caterpillar in it is still not the same - it will “dig in” - keep this in mind if you assemble your own version of a snowmobile-scooter with your own hands.

But on the road or on snow with a depth of up to 15 centimeters, such a home-made "winter" scooter goes very confidently and can even tow a small load behind it.

In the spring, it is easy to make an all-terrain vehicle from a snowmobile converted from a scooter, for which you remove the ski and put the wheel on.

"If anything is worth doing, it is only what is considered impossible." Oscar Wilde

On this "skeleton" I went for spare parts. And then I heard: “Come on, the scooter is stolen, if it’s all without lining! And… it looks like a Terminator.” The phrase about the Terminator was remembered. I came home and realized that I would not return my native plastic to him. I wanted to do something completely unusual in the style of unforgettable Hollywood characters. Later, another idea appeared - to stir up something similar to a motorcycle, but with a native transmission - a sort of scooterbike. But for this you need to redo the frame and the entire layout! Spent a lot of time thinking. One evening I watched "Predator" on TV. And it dawned on me - that's what you need! And off we go...
I remembered the welder's skill - this is how the Ducati birdcage frame appeared - not only beautiful, but also durable. There was no special skill, but the tool was enough. Laser pointers and even a laser rotary level were used. Each detail, made by hand, was given with a fight, because there was nothing to take measurements from, and sometimes he himself did not know how it would look.
There was a time when I earned a living by making art products from gypsum and concrete - it came in handy: I fashioned a Predator mask from plasticine and made a multi-piece form of gypsum from it. Then I laid glass mats impregnated with polyester resin in it. The same with all cladding elements. The tank decided to make it also fiberglass, and introduced a copper grate into the walls to remove static electricity. Later, the tank and seat were combined into a single part to reduce the number of fasteners and ease of dismantling.
Haunted by the standard rear suspension- well, she did not look in the new layout, there was no “airiness” and “openness” in her. I had to make an adapter that simultaneously played a role rear wing and was a support for a monoshock, like the Italjet Dragster 50. Oh, and I suffered with it!
Rear suspension adapter - asymmetrical, complex shape, welded from metal 3 mm thick. First, I made a layout of the adapter out of cardboard, then I marked the attachment points to the scooter “leg” - the transmission. For rigidity and reliability, I used the maximum possible number of attachment points - on the left (in the direction of travel) I used the upper bolts of the variator cover and two freed (after dismantling the starter, which I refused without regret, since it starts “with a half kick”) points, as well as a powerful “point ", released from the dismantling of the native shock absorber. On the right are two attachment points for the exhaust pipe, I also used them. Specially supplemented the adapter with small stiffeners.
I found a monoshock absorber in a scooter parts store. But the point of its lower attachment had to be crafted. The lower “ear” of the VAZ shock absorber came up for her. Having pressed out the old silent block, welded the ear to the adapter, strengthened it with "kerchiefs" and pressed in a new one. I made the upper mount to the frame with the possibility of “adjustment” - I drilled several pairs of holes, while driving I chose the optimal position. The monoshock has really changed the look of the scooterbike. At one time I even wanted to quit the idea with the image of the Predator, and make a naked one. But the trouble is - there is nothing to expose: there is simply no engine in the usual "motorcycle" place.
The bonnet turned out to be voluminous, so the musical giblets - the Pioneer receiver, the electrician and the 20 Ah battery - were sent to where I had put my feet before. From above, all this is closed by a lid into which Alpine speakers are embedded. It is gratifying that there was a place for music on such a little thing! I moved the receiver control using a computer cable to the steering wheel, and moved the panel from the receiver there.
I introduced LED lighting under the tank and belly, and made the eyes-headlights bright orange and extraterrestrial aggressive. The tail of the "Predator" is metal, the frame of thin pipes is sheathed with thin (1 mm) metal. I did this for rigidity, since it is convenient to move the tail of the bike.
I didn’t touch the engine, I just took off the carbon deposits and polished the purge windows, because I made a mot for my daughter, but so far she doesn’t need power. Air filter connected through an extension cord and hidden inside the frame. This is a necessary measure - a footboard is located in its regular place.
I painted the bike with hammer effect paint, and many bought into it: “How much does it weigh if it’s all metal?”. But the weight has not increased much (from 68 to 75 kg), mainly due to the battery and music. But since these weights are located low, the bike became very stable, which is convenient when stopping at a traffic light - you hardly put your legs out.
This small (length 1500, width 610, seat height 750 mm) alien hunter will not get lost anywhere, and not because of the backlight - it is on every palm tree, flower bed and bush, and not because of the music - it is from every car, but will not be lost because it is unique.
And the phrase about the Terminator does not leave me alone. It's too easy to make an iron Terminator with a "red eye" and a naked skeleton. But the "Liquid Terminator" ...
What do I need? A scooter, a cast-iron cauldron and a large iron spoon…

This is my first attempt to make something unusual out of a simple scooter. Too bad I didn't start doing this earlier.

There are Predator-themed cues - a lot of helmets and a couple of bikes, but there is no such Predator, and even made from a "hole".

A mini scooter, or self-propelled scooter, was a childhood dream for many. Now Chinese online markets allow you to purchase this miracle for yourself or a child for a relatively small amount. And this article will push the craftsmen to the right train of thought to create their own "iron pony".

Mini scooter - what is it?

Environmentally friendly, silent vehicle. The fact that it can be charged from a simple electrical outlet, like a smartphone or laptop, saves a lot of money and time for the owner. If the model is foldable, then it is convenient to store it in an apartment, pantry, on a balcony or transport it in the trunk of a car.

The mini scooter is capable of traveling at a maximum speed of 50 km/h. It does not require installation state number, and according to the laws of the Russian Federation it is defined as a moped. To drive it, category M rights are required - by the way, they are given along with automobile ones.

Mini scooter: advantages

The electric scooter, first of all, has an important advantage over other models - this tool is literally based on the principle of "sit down and go." No need to turn on the ignition, start the vehicle with an electric starter, or dial the desired number of revolutions with the gas handle. It is enough to turn the key once and press the "gas" - soft start, smooth acceleration and, most importantly, silent movement, which neither mopeds nor bikes can boast of.

The rechargeable battery has an approximate lifespan of three years. It takes 4-8 hours to recharge the battery to 100%. This is enough for a 100-120 km trip. And due to the minimum number of parts that can be rubbed, the mini-scooter is able to serve its owner for a long time.

Summing up, we can highlight the five main advantages of this tool:

  1. Noiselessness.
  2. No need for fuel costs.
  3. There is no need to change the oil.
  4. Excellent acceleration dynamics.
  5. Safe riding a la "bike".

The beauty of such a thing as a mini-scooter, the photo below can convey in all its glory - it is a very compact and convenient form of transport.

A Brief History of Scooters

The very first scooters, strongly reminiscent of motorcycles, appeared about a century ago. They were produced by the German company Hildebrand & Wolfmüller. However, this device with a top speed of 40 km / h did not find its admirers in those days, as a result of which the company went bankrupt.

The name "scooter" comes from English to scoot - to run away, wash off. In the US, the device, by the way, first "rested on its laurels" in 1936. The scooter of the Californian company caused a stir among Americans - automatic transmission gears, small wheels with a diameter of 5 inches, two stroke engine, stable footrest. The invention consumed only 3.5 liters of gasoline per 100 kilometers!

A new boom was caused in 1977 by Yamaha Corporation, releasing its Passol S50: light weight, luggage compartment, mud protection and reasonable price.

Now around the world, dozens of manufacturers produce maxi- and mini-scooters: in our country, for example, devices from Japan, China, and South Korea are popular.

DIY mini scooter

Here is an outline of the picture of creating an electric scooter-bike:

  • A moped, a bicycle, a go-kart can serve as the basis - the main thing is to have a plan in your head on what to do next.

  • Think about what you will use as a footboard - perhaps you will have to sacrifice someone's scooter, or you can use a footboard from a car.
  • Battery: you can use several pieces from a computer "uninterruptible power supply".
  • To rechargeable batteries were safe, it would not be superfluous to make a protective cover for them.
  • Think about where to get a disc brake: the one that is put on children's quad bike, is quite suitable (in popular applications for reselling old and unnecessary things, similar items from faulty equipment can be purchased at a completely ridiculous price). To fix it, you need to drill a hole in the frame of the "bike" and put this disk on a cylindrical key.
  • The regulator block in any Chinese online store can really purchase this part for affordable price, including with a handle for gas and detailed instruction installation.
  • Wheels - the same children's car, ATV or kart. It is desirable to choose their diameter within 4-5 inches.
  • The donor of tires and cameras can be the same as in the previous paragraph.
  • It is not necessary to use these used parts - they can be found at a good price in online stores.

In good weather, a moto scooter with a small engine capacity has always been in demand not only among young people, but also among adults. Since it was distinguished by its ease of operation, lightness and good speed. But unfortunately, when the cold comes due to the small diameter of the wheels, riding a scooter becomes very inconvenient, and in snowy weather, even wearing winter tires completely unrealistic.

Having studied various motorcycle magazines, it was noticed that there are caterpillar propellers on sale, they can be installed instead of the rear wheel, which will lead to the transformation of the motorcycle into a snowmobile.

If you have like-minded people in this matter, then it is best to take the caterpillar from the Buran snowmobile (photo 1), it is perfect, since 4 suitable ones for the scooter will come out of one caterpillar. The cost will cost 2.5 times cheaper than the tracks taken from a motorcycle. But for one scooter, it will cost too much.

Soon, after contacting a company that deals with propulsion kits, one not very wide caterpillar and a plastic ski without fastening were obtained.

No changes will be made to the basic design of the scooter, so that in warm weather it would always be possible to replace the installed tracks with wheels.

We buy in the store a driven sprocket from the Buran snowmobile, 2 wheels from an ordinary scooter for children and 2 small wheels from a trolley, with roller bearings. Next, instead of the drive wheel on the scooter, we put a wheel of a much smaller diameter, for example from a sports car, in order to replace the gear ratio. This is done because in the transmission of a scooter, the gear ratio is usually calculated for its operation on excellent roads at an approximate speed of up to 40-60 km / h. Of course, when driving on snow, the load on the engine increases significantly and its power is most likely not enough, and such a high speed can be dangerous on slippery roads.

We take the disk of the drive wheel of the moped and cut it out brake drum with slots for the drive shaft, and to mount a disk of a smaller diameter, we drill a hole in the drum (photo 2).

In order for the caterpillar not to slip off the wheel and not slip during movement, we make hooks (photo 3) from plastic water pipes, which, in turn, are inserted into the hole on the caterpillar.

It is necessary to make a bandage of the diameter we need from flat roofing metal, to fix the hooks on it with the help of furniture capercaillie bolts (photo 4), they should be at the same distance from each other and in a step that will correspond to the location of the caterpillar holes. Using the same bolts, we fasten the wheel, after putting a bandage on it (photo 5). We get from an ordinary wheel, a soft drive caterpillar sprocket.

We connect the driving sprocket of the Buran snowmobile with 2 rubber wheels from the cart with M8 bolts, we get a driven sprocket, and for the axis we take a stud with an M10 thread (photo 6).

To make a frame for a caterpillar mover, you will need metal corners and square pipes (photo 7). The dimensions of the frame and the parts to be attached to it will need to be chosen independently, depending on the track you have chosen and the brand of your scooter.

You can take a homemade ski made of wood or plastic from a children's scooter, attaching a metal undercut from below so that the scooter does not lose control on an icy road. The ski must be fixed at the front fork of the scooter through a special rack. It will have 2 degrees of freedom of movement, due to which, when the scooter is tilted to either side, the ski will remain on the snow with its entire plane.

We install a wide platform under the feet and a small decorative shield for the front fork. For long trips in adverse weather, a windshield must be installed.

The standard body kit on the scooter is not very strong in high degrees of frost and has small pockets, if snow gets into them, the weight of the scooter will increase. To avoid this, we make a small casing over the caterpillar. To do this, we take a piece of plexiglass, polycarbonate or other plastic that we need in size and carefully cut out the sidewall of the casing.

We shift it onto a large sheet, it will serve as another wall of the matrix and, using hot glue, we fix the plastic corners around the entire perimeter of the sidewall. We cut off a strip of flexible and preferably thin plastic, the width of the planned casing. We carefully assemble the matrix by gluing the previously made sidewall, bottom and large panel on the corners. All joints of parts must be coated with plasticine.

Dear visitors of the site "", today we will consider one of the options for assembling a snowmobile from a scooter with our own hands. Mainly what fundamental changes not included in the design and the scooter can be easily converted from a snowmobile into an all-terrain vehicle) an excellent and moderately economical means of transportation, both around the city and around countryside. This type of transport is especially popular among teenagers, because it is an intermediate link between a bicycle and a real motorcycle) With the onset of cold weather, motorcycles are put in the garage and stay there until spring, but not in our case, because an excellent snowmobile was made from a scooter for fishing trips)

To make a full-fledged scooter, you need a rubber caterpillar, in this case it was borrowed from the Buran snowmobile and cut in half. Also, a rubber caterpillar can be made from a tire from passenger car, of course, you will have to take the trouble to punch square holes for the step of the star, make metal heels, but for free) The author adapted the wheel from the kart as the leading star, the fact is that such a wheel is slightly smaller than that of the scooter itself, which reduces speed and increases traction characteristics cars. A metal band is screwed onto the wheel with teeth fixed with flat-head furniture bolts. The driven star is made from the original Buranovskaya with the addition of trolley wheels on the sides, the road wheels are wheels from a children's scooter. The frame and fastening of the caterpillar are welded from a professional pipe and a corner.

The ski is borrowed from a children's snowmobile, a metal guide is installed at the bottom so that the snowmobile feels stable on the road. The ski also has a floating position, that is, when tilted, it remains flat on the snow.

A kart wheel is used as a leading star. The wheel is covered with a metal bandage with teeth made of PVC pipes screwed with furniture bolts. Driven star from the Buran snowmobile, wheels from the cart are added on the sides. Wheels from a children's scooter were used as road wheels.
