THE IDEA OF INVESTING IN A USED ELANTRA MD SEEMS GOOD. THE SEDAN IS NOT BAD, BUT, Alas, IT WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SAVE YOUR MONEY. A CAR LOSES VALUE FASTER THAN IT GETS OLDER

Story
, produced from 2006 to 2010, 8 Russia did not have time to become famous for its “exploits” in the market. By the time its sales began, the “soap” era of design was already fading away. The car was equipped with 1.4 (122 hp) and 4.0 (143 hp) petrol fours, a diesel version with Russian market traditionally was not supplied. By the way, already at this time the name i30 appeared on the US market.
HYUNDAI ELANTRA fifth generation from 2010 to 2014

The fifth generation model (Avante on the domestic market), which appeared in 2010, took two years to pass the millionth mark in circulation and become the owner of the “Car of the Year” title in 2012. In the Asian markets, in the States and in Europe, the car came in handy. The sedan did well in Russia. However, it turned out that our distances were too much for the Elantra to handle. The suspension, designed for high-quality roads, failed.

Hence the plethora of operational problems. For example, due to the short travel and rigidity of the front suspension, the front wheel bearings do not last long, which, after “getting acquainted” with the pits, have to be changed after a short mileage. The steering also doesn’t show itself well; it doesn’t want to work silently even after a major overhaul. However, not everything is so bad. There are plenty of very flattering reviews about the car on the forums...

The front-wheel drive sedan arrived in Russia with naturally aspirated petrol fours: a 1.6-liter 132-horsepower Gamma series engine made in China, known from Solyarice” and a more powerful 150-horsepower Nu series engine. Apart from the main negative aspects associated with poor maintainability, the motors have not earned any negativity. Ifdon't skimp on high quality gasoline, even if it’s an AI-92, it takes care of 250 thousand km without major repairs. Then, however, if cleaning deposits in fuel system no longer saves, they require radical and not at all cheap replacements.

Transmissions are 6-speed: manual and automatic. The first hassle is not a problem if you change the oil in the box occasionally. It's worse with machine guns. Their. Of course, not often, but we caught ailments on runs of 30 thousand km - jolts when switching or when braking. First of all, flashing the transmission ECU helps with the illness. But over time it becomes more difficult. We change the oil at least once every 60 thousand km.

They say different things about the body. Some people only notice minor chips on the hood and trunk lid, remaining satisfied with the quality. Others are categorically dissatisfied with the quality of the paintwork,galvanized body and thick iron. It is not uncommon for corrosion to settle in the areas where the rear fenders come into contact with the headlights. However, body problems are eliminated when purchasing a car, as well as the consequences of wear and tear on the interior.

Speaking of electrics, almost everyone admits that Hyundai did a conscientious job here. Failures are rare, and it is difficult to identify the most systematic of them. But the Elantra was unlucky with the suspension. In the city you won't feel anything wrong. However, you need to understand that the sedan does not behave well at speeds over 90 km/h on an ideal track. Suspension moves are short, breakdowns are not uncommon, with all the ensuing consequences for supporting parts and wheel bearings. Tires with a higher profile are required. In addition, the car swings willingly, and rear axle can rearrange on potholes with a change in trajectory.

TRANSMISSION

The cost of repairing a broken machine, which definitely cannot be avoided after 200 thousand km. I wouldn't call it predatory. But 50,000 rubles is still the amountserious. By the way, cars assembled before mid-April 2011 quickly began to “click” when the gearbox selector was moved to position 0. But this already turned out to be a CV joint lift.The problem was fixed by installing special washers.

ENGINE

The engines are not very economical, but both the ignition coils and the valve timing system work well, and the timing drive is equipped with a reliable chain. Poor starting in extreme cold and limited maintainability can be considered disadvantages. Most of the replacements are minor, which means they are not cheap. To extend the life of the engine, mechanics recommend changing the oil every 10 thousand km, trying not to deviate from the manufacturer’s recommendations.

SUSPENSION

Front wheel bearings are often replaced after 20-30 thousand km. Their enemy is the pits. Many people successfully “pump up” the suspension with stiffer springs and shock absorbers. Impacts cause play to occur at the junction of the long part of the steering shaft with its short component. It is not uncommon to find wear on the right steering rack bushing. The cost of solving the problem is about 20,000 rubles (including work).

BODY

Damage body parts almost always entails replacing them. Even the fender liners are made of fragile plates no more than 2 mm thick. The bumpers are “walking” and “asking” for screws. It is not uncommon to see damage to the paintwork on the trunk lid and rear wing at the point of contact with the lamps. Here it is worth adjusting the cover bumpers and gluing the contact area between the canopy and the wing to increase the gap.

BRAKES

Class C+
Front-wheel drive
Transmission 6-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The fifth generation of the mid-size Hyundai Elantra sedan was presented in May 2010 at the Busan International Auto Show. The fifth generation Elantra MD is placed between Hyundai Solaris and Hyundai Sonata and i40, more closely approaching the latter. In the domestic market, the model was sold as Avante (and with an avant-garde automatic parking system). The model came to the Russian market in the fall of 2011 as the New Elantra. The Elantra MD was equipped with 1.6-, 1.8- and 2.0-liter gasoline engines, including direct GDi injection power from 126 to 174 hp The Elantra MD was Hyundai's first mid-size sedan with GDI systems and a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Basic Hyundai equipment The Elantra MD has become more equipped than its predecessor Elantra HD (IV generation), and has almost reached the level of the top-spec GLS Elantra HD, but without fog lights, an air quality control system, climate control (although air conditioning is provided), leather steering wheel upholstery and gear lever, sliding armrest (there is only a non-sliding one) front seat. In the top configuration, the Elantra MD received such options as heated rear seats, a cabin air ionizer, a rain sensor, and a full-size spare tire. In 2014, the model was restyled.

Advantages:

– The suspension and engine are specially modified for Russian operating conditions
– Good handling even without use electronic systems
– A car loses relatively little value with age due to the high demand for secondary market
– Quite reliable (up to a mileage of 200,000 km) and simple engines(especially G4FC) with a timing chain drive ($70) with a service life of 80–100,000 km and a manual gearbox (clutch service life ($150) over 100,000 km)
– Good passive safety– 5 stars on the EuroNCAP frontal test

Flaws:

– Low dynamics even with “eco mode” disabled (11.6 s with automatic transmission)

Body (externally):

– Design flaw (too small gap (less than 2 mm) between the casing and the fan, which can cause freezing of the fan due to condensation, overheating and fire in engine compartment!
– Thin paint coating
– Corrosion under the glass seals along the top
– Clear signs of corrosion on cars restored after an accident

Body (salon):

– The steering wheel peels off quickly
– The glass in the guides becomes distorted (cleaning and lubrication)
– The glove box latch becomes loose
– Creaking of the rear parcel shelf in the cabin in cold weather (silicon grease helps)
– Insufficient basic sound insulation

Body (electrics):

– Weak headlights
– Relatively more frequent replacement light bulbs in headlights and lanterns than their European and Japanese counterparts

Engines (petrol):

– Relatively low maintainability of all-aluminum engines (wear of the less powerful 1.6-liter G4FC engine is usually higher)
– Due to poor quality fuel, the throttle valve becomes clogged and fuel filter
– Due to the slippage of the timing chain, the valves may hit the pistons (the chain tension must be controlled at scheduled TO-5 and TO-6)
– An oil change is recommended after 10,000 km (15,000 km)

Transmission (manual):

– If the clutch disc wears out (after 100,000 km), it is recommended to replace the assembly: disc, basket, release bearing

Transmission (automatic):

– Dead units are found only in dashing drivers

Chassis:

– Weak Mando rear shock absorbers, which failed even with minimal mileage, too soft struts are dangerous at speeds, replacement with Kayaba is recommended
– Noisy standard tires
– Low service life of stabilizer struts ($12) and wheel bearings ($28) – 30,000 km
– Front lever life ($60) – 100,000 km
– Front brake pads change after 30,000 km, discs - after 60,000 km, and rear drums - 100,000 km
– Inherent knocking of the steering rack when moving over large obstacles, and when it intensifies, you need to replace a set of plastic bushings ($150 with replacement), which usually lasts for 30,000 km

The car is manufactured by Hyundai Motors Company, which means “modernity” in Korean. The car manufacturer is the largest in South Korea and ranks fourth in the world, dethroning Ford. In some markets the model was called Lantra and Avante, but it was called that only to distinguish it from the Lotus Elan or Mitsubishi Elante already in production at that time. But since 2001, the car has been produced under the official name Elantra, since models with similar names were no longer produced. Let's take a closer look at this model on the website!

And the “muzzle” is nothing!...

Hyundai Elantra 5 has acquired its own signature, attractive and unique style, the striking feature of which is its eye-catching optics. The front and rear headlights have an oblique shape and are significantly extended along the wings of the car.

Stylists of the largest Korean automaker are confident that buyers will appreciate the bright and futuristic appearance of the fifth Elantra. The edges and surfaces have smoothed shapes and, when viewed from the side, form a single elongated line.

Fuel consumption on Elantra V

Thanks to this body, this made it possible to give the car excellent aerodynamics, which significantly reduces fuel consumption! By the way, Hyundai Elantra is one of the few cars with automatic transmission gear, which on the highway at a speed of 70 km/h consumes 4 liters of fuel per 100 km, and at a speed of 100 km/h the guys from “drive” managed to achieve 5 liters per hundred!

Another plus is that the plant allows the use of AI 92 gasoline!

Salon and equipment

The interior of the new Elantra has become more spacious; modern and practical materials were used in its decoration.

The design style is in harmony with the appearance of the car; the design elements of the steering wheel spokes and two-level console resemble the edges of the body. It should be noted here that Koreans never repeat finishing elements in subsequent models, which is often typical of European models.

Functional keys for controlling the trip computer (which is now Russified) and the music system have moved to the leather steering wheel,

and the seat heating buttons are placed in the climate control unit. Now all manipulations can be done quickly and without being distracted from the road. Surprisingly, the side mirrors are quite large, despite the streamlined shape of the car.

The seats have changed significantly; now they have become more rigid and have increased lateral reliefs, designed to provide good support for the driver on sharp turns. And in order for the third passenger in the rear seat to feel more comfortable, the designers completely reduced the tunnel under their feet.

Second row seats and trunk

The distance between the front and rear seats has been increased, and now there is a space of about 12 cm from the knees of the rear passenger to the back of the front seat.

The trunk of the new Elantra is large, 485 liters, but it can become even larger; using a drive directly from the trunk, the rear seat folds quite easily.

The Hyundai Elantra 5 with automatic transmission and 1.8 engine accelerates to 100 km/h in 10.2 seconds, noise insulation deserves an “excellent” rating, and soft shock absorbers adequately dampen vibration on uneven roads. Steering The car is very sensitive, even “sharp” and reacts even to a turn of a few degrees.

Year after year, Hyundai's global sales volume is growing steadily, and in 2012 Elantra took third place, behind only Toyota Corolla and Ford Focus. Since 2013 Hyundai of the Year Elantra 5 is produced in four trim levels: Base, Optima, Comfort, Sport. Most of the changes will occur in the Optima trim level. Now it will have a 1.8 liter engine installed, the power will increase to 149.6 Horse power, the gearbox can be manual or automatic, six-speed.

Charged version

The most complete modification is the Sport, which will also have a 1.8-liter engine. Here, in fact, is the “charged” version of the GT:

That’s probably all we wanted to tell you, if you forgot anything, write in the comments! 🙂

No nail, no rod, and smooth Russian roads for everyone!

Hyundai Elantra MD (J5) review

Fifth Hyundai generation Elantra received the factory designation MD and the internal designation J5 in the Elantra Club.
The model was first shown in April 2010 at the Busan Motor Show (Busan, South Korea), and sales in the domestic Korean market under the name Avante MD began in the second half of 2010. Almost simultaneously sales started in North America - there the model is traditionally called Elantra. But the fifth generation “reached” Russia only a year later - in the second half of 2011. That is why, in various publications, this generation may be called “Elantra 2011”.
In August 2013, a model update was introduced in Korea. The updated Elantra received a slightly redesigned design and some new options. The wheelbase has not changed, but the overall length has increased by 20 mm to 4550 mm due to the increase in the front bumper by 5 mm and the rear by 15 mm. External elements have been updated: front bumper, radiator grille, fog lights and headlights (+added LED daytime running lights running lights), wheel disks, rear bumper, tail lights(with LEDs). There have also been minor changes in the interior, based, among other things, on feedback from the owners: the central air ducts have been moved upward, the position of the armrest has been changed, some elements of the center console have been changed, a seat ventilation function has been added, and the head unit has received a new display. Added Flex Steer electric power steering control system and an advanced automatic parking system. A 1.6-liter diesel engine has been added to the engine lineup, as well as a proprietary start-stop system (ISG).
Note: Not all options listed are available in Russia.

The main body of the car is a sedan. Given the popularity of the model, two more body styles were introduced in America at the beginning of 2012:
- Coupe - three-door version of the sedan
- GT - hatchback (in Russia and Europe known as the second generation Hyundai i30).
At the time of writing, only the sedan is officially supplied to Russia. The hatchback in Russia is sold as a separate i30 model.

In April 2010, the South Korean automaker Hyundai launched the production of a new, fifth generation for all famous model Elantra (in South Korea - Hyundai Avante). This generation differs from its ancestor by more high quality materials used, original design and improved driving characteristics, thanks to which it can easily compete with other representatives of its segment . The internal “stuffing” of the car was also greatly redesigned and improved; a large number of different electronic systems appeared that make driving much easier and more comfortable, thereby leveling weak spots previous generation. The car was produced only in a front-wheel drive configuration. The buyer was offered a choice of variations with two naturally aspirated petrol engines of 1.6 or 1.8 liters, paired with a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic, which are capable of accelerating the car to more than 200 km/h. Looking at this car, we can confidently say that the company’s engineers did a good job of improving the already good characteristics of the previous generation, however, it is impossible to eliminate all the shortcomings, so the resulting product has its advantages and disadvantages, which we will talk about in this article.

The main advantages of Elantra

Before considering the main issue of the topic, let us outline the main advantages of this model:

  1. Reliable power units;
  2. Fuel efficiency with sufficient high power engine;
  3. Good maneuverability;
  4. Ergonomic interior;
  5. Cheap to maintain;
  6. The compression ratio allows the use of 92nd gasoline;
  7. Low price;
  8. Decent sound insulation for her price category;
  9. Adaptability to Russian operating conditions;
  10. Pleasant appearance;
  11. Roomy interior and trunk for this class;
  12. High maintainability.

Weaknesses of the 5th generation Hyundai Elantra (MD)

  1. Steering rack;
  2. Shock absorber struts;
  3. Front wheel bearings;
  4. Ball joints;
  5. Ignition coils;
  6. Gasoline pump;
  7. ABS sensors;
  8. CV joints;
  9. Rear crankshaft oil seal.

Steering rack.

Probably the most famous weaknesses of this car is his steering rack. Due to engineering miscalculations in its production, it is not able to withstand the loads placed on it for a long time, as a result of which it first simply begins to hum when turning the steering wheel, then knocks, and then simply fails. Typically, the death of this unit occurs at mileages from 20 to 50 thousand kilometers, which is within the range of the factory warranty, so replacement work is carried out by the dealer.

But there are situations when the rail goes to the next world after the end of the warranty period. In this case, you will have to pay about 50 thousand rubles. to troubleshoot.

Shock absorber struts.

Although the car’s suspension was designed for driving on poor-quality Russian roads, shock absorber struts often do not live up to the expectations placed on them. As a rule, a factory defect appears after a mileage of 50 thousand kilometers and consists of deterioration in controllability, increased braking distance, increased car roll when turning or sharp braking, as well as unpleasant knocking in the suspension.

The cost of one shock absorber strut is about 2500-3000 rubles. per piece, which is very inexpensive. However, if any of them fails, then all the others will also soon be asked to be replaced.

Front wheel bearings.

Not only the steering rack, but also the wheel bearings are subject to increased loads in this car. As in the first case, Hyundai engineers did not take into account some factors of Russian reality and installed insufficiently powerful bearings in the hubs, turning them into just another vulnerable spot. As a result, they rarely overcome the 50 thousand km mark, “delighting” the driver with an unforgettable howl at high speeds.

Ball joints.

The next victim of poor design was ball joints. Because of increased loads, as well as insufficient quality materials used in their production, balls have to be changed quite often. Depending on operating conditions, the replacement period for this unit can be every 20 thousand km, which causes a lot of trouble for the owners.

Ignition coils.

Many owners also consider operating problems to include the constant need to replace ignition coils, problems with which begin after a mileage of 40 thousand km. Symptoms of an upcoming replacement include periodic engine tripping, loss of power, problems with starting, increased consumption fuel and other, not the most favorable things. The cost of one coil, on average, ranges from 1,500 to 2,000 rubles, and you can carry out the work of replacing them yourself.

Although the engine is designed to use low-quality Russian fuel, its fuel pump is not capable of digesting small debris and water contained in it. With a mileage of 50 thousand, you can already feel the loss of throttle response of the car, caused by wear of the internal mechanisms of the pump and, as a result, insufficient pressure fuel. A new fuel pump will cost you from 1,200 to 2,500 thousand rubles, but the cost of replacing it greatly depends on the service station you choose.

The next common breakdown of the car in question is in the sensors ABS systems, which are highly sensitive to water and dirt. Since there is always an abundance of this “good” on our roads, problems with the anti-lock braking system can arise already at a mileage of 50 thousand and can only be treated by replacing faulty components.

On cars with a 1.6-liter engine and an automatic transmission, a disease often occurs in the form of rapid wear of CV joints. The first calls of the upcoming replacement may be extraneous sounds when starting from a stop with the wheels turned out, weak kicks when starting from a standstill and when changing gears.

If you drive aggressively enough, this unpleasant moment can manifest itself already at a mileage of 40 thousand km, so it is highly not recommended to subject CV joints to excessive loads, especially on inverted wheels, because their cost can reach 20 thousand rubles apiece.

Rear crankshaft oil seal.

The least common of all the above defects, but one that occurs in many owners of this car, is the problem of oil leaks from under the rear crankshaft oil seal.

By itself, this element costs little (about 500 rubles), but the work to replace it can reach 8-10 thousand. This is due to the design feature of the motor and its location in the engine compartment, which makes the replacement process very problematic.

The main disadvantages of the Hyundai Elantra 2010–2015. release

Other shortcomings of this car include:

  1. The coating of the steering wheel and gear knob wears out quickly;
  2. Low overhang of the front bumper;
  3. Wide left stance windshield, which greatly limits the view;
  4. Insufficient quality paintwork;
  5. Few places to store small items;
  6. Loses value quickly.

Conclusion.

For a practical person who does not have great financial resources, but wants to get a high-quality, reliable, pleasant-looking and economical car, the 5th generation Hyundai Elantra will be one of the most best options for purchase. Of course, this car is in the middle price category and cannot lay claim to the laurels of an ideal transport. It has its pros and cons, the significance of which only you can draw conclusions about. But we can say with confidence that in terms of price/quality ratio, this machine is head and shoulders above most of its classmates, you can be sure.

P.S.: Dear car owners, if you have been noticed frequent breakdowns any parts or components of this car model, please report it in the comments below.
