Datsun mi made in which country? How they make Datsun on-DO at AvtoVAZ. Car shortcomings and the falling out engines scandal

I got to the AVTOVAZ plant thanks to the launch of the production of a family sedan Datsun on-DO, developed specifically for the Russian market. The opening took place without much fanfare, words were said, hands were shaken, the curtain was opened, and the car was rolled out. Tada! That's all. The most interesting thing for me was to look at how the Zhiguli was assembled, about quality control, about the assembly line of the b0 conveyor (a joint creation of the Russian-French-Japanese alliance).

He is a graduate of the Swedish Military Academy, holds a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Stockholm University and is a graduate of Harvard University's Senior Management Program. In the Swedish Armed Forces he rose to the rank of major.

The Board of Directors of OJSC AVTOVAZ approved Andersson as President on November 5, 2013. He took office on January 13, 2014. Since that time, Bo Andersson became the chairman of the board of AVTOVAZ.

“The first thing I did was go to production. Early in the morning I went to several restrooms and found that they were very dirty and some did not work at all. The team was well prepared for the meeting with me, because they had three months to do so, so I did not need an official introduction to the team. I said, “Focus on one thing today—the restrooms. Make sure people can use them."

And he did! And not just restrooms. The surrounding area is very clean!

In communication he is gentle, intelligent and very focused on success. Lives in Tolyatti, flies economy class.

Conveyor workers. A compassionate woman brought the photojournalists some pies. People are extremely unsociable and do not like to look at the camera.

All signs are in the updated corporate style of LADA - DATSUN.

Smoking, littering and riding mopeds are strictly prohibited on the territory of the enterprise. Therefore, if you need to go to another workshop, you take your bike and go.

The conveyor line itself is two-story. The machine is assembled in several stages.

Installation of interior elements. Throughout the entire assembly process, sheets record what, where and by whom it was installed in this car. The photo shows the leaf on the right.

Spare parts for DATSUN.

DATSUN interior assembly. In fact, Datsun is a LadaGranta, but only a Datsun. =)

The front struts were screwed on.

Chassis assembly line.

Factory worker.

There are a lot of women at the company.

Stand like that all day with your hands up!

Datsun, and after it LADA. There is one conveyor - the same assemblers, spare parts from Lada.

This is what the driver's seat of a Datsun looks like.

Checking for play with a mallet.

In a month, LADA switches to pre-orders from consumers. If you buy the cheapest package, then you can order whatever you want into it. But we'll have to wait. The car will be assembled to order.

Screwing a heat shield to a Datsun.

The color is normal =) Clean and without bubbles. I'm not very good at this.

They very strictly ensure that all parts of the machine that may be damaged are covered with a protective film.

Filling process fluids.

If something is wrong, they write notes like this.

The picker.

Line for filling liquids and first starting the engine.

These are the cleaners who travel around the workshops. Everything is completely sterile!

OTK. They check the numbers and equipment.

They start the engine and send it to the stand, where they do the wheel alignment.

Additional visual and mechanical check of assembly quality.

Information stand.

Another.

And once again OTC. Total quality control. I checked it personally!

Grease, touch up, check.

And so, the finished car is sent to the car dealership.

Personally, I have an excellent impression of the plant. Of course, the asshole guards and pretentious and tastelessly dressed managers have not gone away. But things are moving.

A little about the plant where Datsun is assembled

Production of the Datsun on-Do model and the entire Datsun brand will take place at the AvtoVAZ plant in Togliatti.

In the picture above, we see just the moment the sedan is assembled at the enterprise.

But we all know about the “bewitched” place where current Lada cars are produced. What should you expect from Datsun?

According to official statements by the company, in preparation for the Datsun project, a lot of modernization was done and enough attention was paid to the process of this very preparation. Last year, Nissan conducted an audit of the VAZ assembly line, on which the on-Do sedan will be assembled. And as you know, more than forty recommendations were issued to improve production.

These recommendations included such things as: - the introduction of new standards for quality control of manufactured products; - the expansion of the final acceptance zone for the vehicle; - the replacement of equipment, even such as boxes for dragging spare parts; and many others.

How much better is Datsun than Lada: long test - test drive, review of Datsun mi-DO, Datsun on-DO

The two burned their passports, went to plastic surgeons and started in Russia new life incognito, posing as Japanese citizens. But with close contact with Datsun, anyone who is familiar with AvtoVAZ products will quickly see through old acquaintances. The first to give themselves away are the humming gearbox and grunting engine. Next comes the poor build quality. But it won’t be without pleasant discoveries. So what did Lada change to become Japanese: a personality or just a guise?

Despite the different design of the head optics, the headlights of both models shine very well

We drove two different Datsuns for two months and came to the conclusion that the optimal choice is a sedan with a manual in the mid-upper configuration. But the mi-Do hatchback is one of the most available models with an automatic transmission on the Russian market. And for the sake of this, some inconveniences can probably be tolerated. For example, that you are unlikely to ever be able to get used to the strange behavior of the brake pedal, which I talked about in detail in the first part of the long-term Datsun test. Probably, the headlights and radiator grille for this model will be in high demand.

Another feature of the automatic Datsun is the ability to... stall while stopping! Once again - a car with automatic transmission gears, without newfangled start-stop systems, it can stall and stall during a stop. Datsun representatives are aware of this problem and promise to fix it soon. The automatic selector also does not shine with convenience - when you turn on D, no, no, you will slip further into position 1 or 2. You realize the mistake after the start, when the gearbox, following the instructions not to shift higher, makes the engine run noisily at higher speeds.

If you do not pay attention to the numerous extraneous sounds, sound insulation in Datsun is decent by class standards

The manual transmission on the test sedan worked adequately, but was annoying with the well-known VAZ howl. The mi-Do hatchback responded with a rumble somewhere in the front suspension or steering, as well as the creaking of seats and interior panels. Even more blatant was the groan of the hatch body under... any intense braking! Against such a background, the whistle of the pads was taken for granted. However, the sedan also did not try to seem quiet: its pedals creaked just like on a hatchback, and the hood hinges made a rich crunch when it was raised. It seems that Datsun is the first Japanese car in history to require a native Russian “broach” after leaving the showroom.

Numerous flaws in the assembly of Datsuns give them away as a donor named Lada. The engine “sweats” in the area of the valve cover gasket - a well-known disease of VAZ units. Fasteners in the engine compartment rust rapidly

And if from the point of view of the number of extraneous sounds the test on-Do still turned out to be more solid, then in terms of the quality of the body assembly it was already inferior to the specific mi-Do. On the sedan, the trunk lid tore itself off against the rear fender, and the front fender does not form a single plane with the door. Same problem with the gas tank flap and rear wing. On the five-door, the front bumper fit perfectly, but on the four-door model, not so much. The badges on the radiator grilles have peeled off on both almost new cars. The doors are thin and close loudly, and when you turn on the audio system, cheap speakers make a dull thud.

The automatic window lifter mode is not activated immediately, and the glass itself does not go all the way down, even from the front. Climate control is based on the warm-cold principle and does not allow you to set the exact temperature value in automatic mode

In the sedan's interior, you can see how the plastic linings on the A-pillars of the roof have swelled from heating by the hot summer sun. The interior of both models has a pronounced “Zhiguli” aroma. There are also questions about ergonomics: to close the driver's door from the inside, you have to literally dive into the opening. The steering wheel is not adjustable for reach, so not everyone will find the ideal fit. But the comfortable chairs are pleasing: covering a long route in them will not be difficult. There are also small joys in the cabin: an easy-to-read instrument panel, a convenient niche for a mobile phone, and a turn signal trained for triple blinking.

The beautiful cornflower blue frame of the scales suddenly begins to play color in the sun. The on-board computer shows the range dynamically: how you press the pedal at a particular moment, how many kilometers will be shown to you

What pleased me most with the Datsuns was that they were easy to drive fast. Excellent visibility, a very peppy engine and an omnivorous suspension allow you to rush without having to worry about the road. At such moments, the efforts on the controls and extraneous sounds become uncritical. True, you will have to come to terms with almost motorcycle-like rolls, as well as the fact that there is no more reliable information on the steering wheel than on the central television channels.

In the rain, the weak Zhiguli windshield wipers do a mediocre job. The alarm system of one of the test cars sometimes allowed itself to be triggered randomly

On-Do and mi-DO are approximately as much better than our own original as they are more expensive - about 10%.

More details Back 1 2 Forward

A revived Japanese brand car company Datsun, the rights to which belong to Nissan, has now become oriented towards the production of affordable cars. The debut for the company was a new affordable sedan Datsun on-DO, developed specifically for Russian consumers.

The new product is designed on the platform, but the design was carried out by Nissan specialists. They decided to borrow the body from a Russian car. Power units were also borrowed, which, for natural reasons, were modified. The entire Datsun model range.

Based on the company’s plans, they planned to create a network of car dealerships to sell the vehicle, and the cars could be serviced at Nissan technical centers. Datsun on-DO can be classified as a niche of economy class cars. Based on his position, he is able to displace Russian and Chinese manufacturers in this category, and even used cars purchased in European countries.

It is not clear why the Russian auto giant decided to produce a direct competitor to Granta and Kalina during a decline in sales of its own cars. Most likely, AvtoVAZ’s behavior makes sense, and even a slight decrease in profits from the sale of its cars can be compensated in another way.

History of creation

This is not the first time the Japanese company Nissan has taken a closer look at the huge Russian automotive market. It was precisely for this direction that they decided to revive the Datsun brand. But then a logical question arises: why? This decision can be explained quite logically - between Nissan’s Almera and VAZ’s Granta and Kalina, there is a fairly large niche that no one occupies.

Therefore, the model was designed to cover this price segment. Many Russian motorists have the funds to buy much the best cars than Russian cars, but they are not enough to purchase a Japanese vehicle.

In addition to the market future, issues of prestige also played a big role in the company’s recovery: Nissan could not decide to provide its own name inexpensive car, so as not to lose face in the niche of expensive premium cars.

The sedan itself is assembled on one of the conveyors in Togliatti, where components of its own production are used. But it cannot do without imported spare parts. Based on such a successful start official sales, the company decided to increase production. Taking all this into account, the production of many units, components and parts will eventually be mastered at Russian enterprises.

Exterior

As already mentioned, the car is similar to the Lada Kalina 2 not only in technical aspects, but also in visual parameters - if you look very quickly, you can even confuse them. It is logical to conclude that thanks to the use of more modern light optics, a different configuration of wings, bumpers with bright aerodynamic elements and other new parts, Lada

Kalina is noticeably inferior in exterior design, because the Datsun on-DO looks more serious and stylish, even compared to the VAZ Granta. In order to improve the external attractiveness of the car, the dimensions were artificially increased by means of a rear overhang of 80 mm.

The nose of the body is decorated with a large trapezoidal radiator grille with a wide chrome frame and a filigree mesh with large cells. You can also pay attention to the small, strict headlights, the embossed hood with stampings, the modest bumper, trimmed at the bottom and complemented by auxiliary holes for the fog lights, and the large, streamlined rear-view mirrors. The side body of the Datsun on-DO shows off its unique fenders and the truly immodestly sized rear of the car.

Similarities with Granta

On the new sedan you can see the lines already familiar from the Grant car, along with contours and styling, however most of them are more expressive and modern. The rear of the compact sedan is not lacking in charm and attractiveness.

Unique lampshades for light-enhancing equipment, a large trunk lid, which provides comfortable access to the trunk, and, finally, a lean rear bumper. The Japanese managed to make the new elements neat and stylish, as well as modernize them and give them solidity.

The model looks nicer than its direct domestic competitor, which allows it to win this competition, winning the attention of car enthusiasts from Russia and beyond. Despite the fact that the appearance of the vehicle is quite budget-friendly, however, with all this, the sedan looks quite attractive, which cannot be fully said about its domestic rival.

Interior

The interior of the new Japanese car is designed on the Lada Granta interior platform and Lada Kalina, however, is very different from them. You can feel it almost everywhere - the center console, dashboard and so on. However, the steering wheel, seats and door card design were transferred to the Japanese from Lada. The torpedo looks pretty good.

This is achieved with the help of considerable volume and waves that smoothly flow across the top of the panel. The instrument panel has a familiar layout and on-board computer display, however, the chrome finish makes the instruments more solid and presentable. The nozzles of the ventilation system, located on the side of the dashboard, retained their shape and location, like those of the Russian “brother”, but the central deflectors received a slightly different shape.

The console located in the center has a correct, ergonomically adjusted shape with the audio and climate system settings units located on it. All the keys and knobs on it are comfortable, you quickly get used to everything - everything is intuitive and readable. If we talk about the interior dimensions of the Japanese sedan, it remains the same, like the Lada Granta.

According to the manufacturers, the cabin is designed for 5 people. In reality, only two people can sit comfortably in the back, and the third seat is not designed for long trips. In addition to the mentioned configurations designed to increase the level of comfort, the Datsun on-DO also has electric drive mirrors with a heating function.

In a more advanced configuration, the car boasts a frontal airbag for the front passenger and side airbags, a multimedia system with a display that supports touch input, a Cityguide navigation system, heating windshield and alloy wheels designed for 14 or 15 inches.

Despite the large luggage compartment, it can be further increased by folding the rear seats if necessary, which will result in more than doubling the free space.

Improvements compared to Granta

The manufacturers also assured that the noise and sound insulation of the interior has been radically improved, the calibration of the springs along with shock absorbers and the technical properties of the suspension themselves have changed. Therefore, the inside of a Japanese car is better and more comfortable than in Russian-made cars.

If we talk about the salon, here is the design team Japanese company tried to combine Japanese asceticism with the breadth of the Russian soul. It all starts with appearance and ends modern materials execution - this is significantly different from the domestic version, and in better side. It’s not for nothing that many people call the salon good quality. If you take individual elements, then they were able to fit well together, and they are perfectly secured.

Another undoubted advantage is the massive luggage compartment, the volume of which is about 530 liters. But there are points that eloquently indicate that this is still a budget model - the seat does not have height adjustment, and the range of adjustments is not so large.

The limited functionality of the car will not allow you to get completely comfortable behind the wheel. In addition, there are no options or armrests for the seats installed in the rear of the Japanese sedan.

Specifications

Power unit

The engine on the Datsun on-DO is a four-cylinder petrol VAZ 1.6 liter in volume. The power of this “heart” develops to 82 horsepower. This aspirated engine has four cylinders arranged in a row and a lightweight connecting rod and piston group.

The power unit has an electrically controlled distributed fuel injection system. The motor fully meets Euro-4 standards.

Despite the VAZ origin of the engine, they were able to seriously modify it, and Japanese engineers were involved in the modernization. The motor operates on high octane gasoline AI-95. Like the domestic version, here injection system fuel supply.

The power unit is equipped with moving parts made from new alloys with improved weight characteristics. Thanks to this, it was possible to increase power along with torque while saving displacement.

Transmission

Installed manual transmission gears received an Atsumitec cable drive and shift forks from Shaeffler (manufacturer: Germany). A dry single-plate clutch is provided. A Jatco 4-speed automatic transmission can be installed as a separate option.

The manual transmission allows the sedan to reach the first hundred in 12.9 seconds, and its top speed is set at 165 kilometers per hour. If we talk about the “automatic” box, it loses 1.4 seconds to the “mechanics” in acceleration to 100 km/h, however, it is superior in the maximum speed limit at 1 km/h. According to the passport, for every 100 kilometers, the Datsun fuel consumption in the combined cycle is 7.4-7.7 liters of fuel (depending on the version of the car).

Suspension

In order to adapt the car to not very good roads, new gas-filled shock absorbers, as well as vacuum brake boosters, were developed and subsequently installed. In addition, ground clearance has been increased to 185 mm. When loaded it is slightly smaller – 168 mm.

The Datsun on-DO received an independent suspension with McPherson struts in front and a semi-independent torsion beam on the rear axle. The suspension was retuned, some silent blocks were replaced with more durable ones, however, in general, this is already a familiar VAZ solution with its advantages and disadvantages.

Steering

Driving the Japanese sedan is quite easy, thanks to electric power steering, which is even included as standard.

Brake system

The front wheels are equipped with ventilated disc brakes, and the rear wheels are equipped with simple drum brakes, which is typical for VAZ-made cars. Handbrake mechanical.

It is dual-circuit with cross distribution of forces. The Datsun on-DO reviews have already collected quite good reviews and, in general, this is deserved. The car is made with high quality, which makes you feel good about it.

Dimensions

As a result, the Datsun on-DO four-door sedan measures 4,337 mm in length, 1,700 mm in width and 1,500 mm in height. The wheelbase is 2,476 mm. Height ground clearance increased to 185 mm, which will allow you to drive confidently even on a broken country road.

And with a fully loaded car, with five people, 50 kilograms in luggage compartment, the ground clearance will be only 168 mm, which is very good considering the quality of our roads.

Safety

The car is already equipped with a driver's front airbag as standard. The middle version already has a pair of airbags, and the top version also has side airbags. Also, among other things, to increase the safety of the “Japanese version of Lada” you can find:

  • Seat belts;
  • Seat belt pretensioners;
  • Belt limiters;
  • Electronic stability control (monitors the angle of rotation of the steering wheel in comparison with the actual course of the car, braking individual wheels if necessary).

The most simple equipment Japanese sedan Datsun ON-DO is equipped with:

  • BAS (emergency braking assistance function);
  • ABS (anti-lock braking system that prevents the wheels from locking during braking);
  • Driver's airbag.

If we talk about the Trust and Dream versions, they are equipped with side and passenger airbags. Moreover, models come with electronic stability control (ESC). Quite humane pricing policy, inherent in a Japanese sedan, does not in any way affect the quality of the passive and active safety of the car.

Theoretical crash test

To date, the Datsun on-DO has not yet been crash tested. However, they checked for safety Lada car Granta, which, as we mentioned earlier, is the prototype of the Japanese car. The debut inspection was carried out by Czech specialists at the TUV SUD laboratory, and the next one was carried out by the Auto Review magazine in 2012.

During the research, the Russian car was able to demonstrate itself properly and achieved a result of 2 stars, in points - 8.4. According to the results, Grant even outperformed Kalina, which suggests that the Datsun on-DO hatchback also lost its points.

During the crash test of the Lada Granta, Japanese representatives were of considerable interest, because at that time they only had plans to create a vehicle based on the Lada. A little later, Takata specialists began developing airbags and seat belts, which once again makes it possible to verify the advantage of the Japanese in a theoretical crash test over the Lada Granta.

Specialists from the Japanese company Nissan said that since it was able to receive 3 stars on the safety scale (9.6 points), then Datsun on-DO will receive no less a rating. The test itself was carried out using the offset frontal collision method.

As a result of the impact, the collision axis passed by the power unit and rushed towards the driver's seat. As for the front and rear doors of the left side of the car, they were opened under the influence of the powerful force of the collision. The door frame in front was deformed, causing the car to lose a point.

Such a malfunction is defined as a loss of integrity and a reduction in the degree of safety according to EuroNCAP standards. Speaking of the steering column, it is worth saying that it has moved inside the car by half a meter and deviated upward by 68 millimeters.

The displacement occurred following the deployment of the airbags. The cabin capsule was able to maintain its structural integrity; only the A-pillar was damaged, which was bent by 70 millimeters. This deviation is normal and indicates acceptable body strength.

The dummy's head did not hit the steering wheel or dashboard thanks to the airbag, which was able to deploy in time. However, there are also shortcomings with similar triggering. The mannequin was thrown onto the side stand, as a result of which it was subjected to an impact that in reality would have caused a concussion or skull injury. Very unusually, however, the standardization of a European company does not record or take into account such side effects during the calculation of the results.

The clutch and brake pedals were moved inside the car by 90 and 120 millimeters. Based on this displacement, they will not cause damage to the legs. The floor of the car was not greatly deformed, and the seats and parts of the interior were not displaced.

As a result, the direct relative of the Japanese sedan, the Lada Granta, scored 8.4 points out of the maximum possible 16. The following received similar ratings: vehicles, How Fiat Albea, Chevrolet Lanos And Hyundai Solaris. Theoretically, the Datsun on-DO is at a similar safety level to these cars.

Options and prices

The production of Datsun on-DO was established at the Volzhsky Automobile Plant in Togliatti, and sales of cars began in the summer of 2014. The cost of a new Japanese sedan of 2016 in the standard Access configuration will be 436,000 rubles.

More advanced configurations Trust and Dream start at 462,000 and 507,000 rubles, respectively. IN minimum configuration The driver's airbag turns on, electric amplifier steering wheel, ABS, EBD, emergency brake booster, height-adjustable steering wheel, heated front seats, folding rear seat backrest.

The average configuration will be supplemented with two front airbags, fog lights, side mirrors with electric drive and heating function, on-board computer and central locking.

As an additional option, you can order climate control, a multimedia system with Bluetooth support and four speakers. The top-end Dream package boasts, even in the basic version, the presence of an audio system with the ability to play video content and climate control, as well as rear electric windows and 15-inch alloy wheels.

The advantages and disadvantages of the Datsun on-DO 2018-2019 in a new body were identified based on reviews real owners. More detailed pros and cons of Datsun on-DO with manual and automatic can be found in the stories below.

Owner reviews

The impressions of a car worth half a million spoiled six months later, when rust began to appear on all four interior doors. Next are the sills, today I discovered rust on the inside of the front hood. In general, iron rots earlier than Soviet Zhiguli, which began to rot after 3 years of operation.

Video review

The car is worth the money, but only in 2014. The quality has not changed over time, but the price has increased significantly. This is not my first car, I had 2 fours, a VAZ 2104 and a VAZ 21111. Of course, in terms of comfort, the Datsun He-DO is better, but in terms of assembly and painting, I have never seen anything worse. The whole interior is rattling, the paint is falling off in layers, the dealership is rude and doesn’t accept complaints, blaming everything on the owner.

Kuzma Gerasimov, drives a Datsun on-DO 1.6 (87 hp) MT 2014

It’s a normal car, I haven’t changed anything except the oil in 60,000 km. The car works in taxi mode all day long. I rode off the winter with a bang, starting up without problems, the signaling system is original without the car factory, I change the oil every 10,000 km, I only used 5/40 synthetic Nord for myself in Belgium.

Kurt, drives a Datsun on-DO 1.6 (87 horsepower) MT 2015

I have it DO in the Trust configuration, I took a VAZ 2114 as a replacement. I was pleased with the power steering, lighting, trunk volume. The dynamics are not bad. At the second thousand kilometers, the engine fault light on the dashboard turned on. The mileage is already 9,000 km, the fault has not shown itself in any way. I use it in St. Petersburg, I drive along the Ring Road. It behaves very unstable at speed - it sways noticeably left and right. If there is rutting, then you can generally lose control.

The side windows don't go all the way down. The interior mirror is poor - you can’t see anything, you can’t change it to a panoramic one - the sun visors are in the way. There is not enough turn signal in the mirrors, the turn signal buzzer is tiring, you have to turn on the turn signal just before turning, just to listen to it less. With sharp acceleration, especially with slipping, the engine can suddenly drop speed to the minimum, which when overtaking and especially making a left turn at a traffic light can cause an accident.

Sergey Fluerar, review of Datsun on-DO 1.6 (87 hp) manual 2015 model year.

Where to buy?

I bought it in January 2017 in the Dream 1 configuration. It’s quite a worthy device (after the VAZ 15). The gearbox hums like everyone else, the brake pads whistle, the heater malfunctions (it blows in the wrong direction in auto mode).

Consumption is still in the running stage and only in the city - 12.5 liters. I liked another feature - foam rubber in the left center deflector - supposedly a technological feature. I also noticed that the taillights and fog lights fog up in cold weather after washing. In cold weather at -30 degrees, there is not enough force to open the rear left door; you have to help with your hands.

Review of Datsun on-DO 1.6 manual 2016

So far the impressions are only positive, I have only had the car for 2 weeks, and so far I have driven 300 km. The car is running in, and I’m also getting used to it. I can say that the engine and gearbox pair work well. The climate is very cool: the weather was from +15 to +28, and it works at “5”.

The ground clearance is good, especially on our rough roads. The suspension pleases with the balance of hardness and softness, it definitely earns a “4”, a kind of average. I'm getting used to the steering wheel. Datsun has it-DO and it is electric. I would rate the capacity and maneuverability as a solid “5”.

It's Datsun

In the Service, Maintenance, Tuning section, the question is, whose brand of car is Datsun? The best answer given by the author Orik is Datsun - the oldest Japanese brand! This is the first name of the current Nissan. At one time, cars under these brands were produced in parallel for different markets, and then gradually the name "Nissan" replaced "Datsun" - marketing, however... Now The Renault-Nissan-AvtoVAZ alliance decided to revive the Datsun brand as a budget car label. In the hierarchy of the alliance in Russia, the brand occupies a place between Lada and Renault. In each of the markets where the Datsun brand is promoted, its own platform is chosen for its production! Thus, in the markets of India, Indonesia and South Africa, locally assembled Datsun GO based on the Nissan Micra/March is sold. In Russia, to reduce costs, the alliance chose the proven and well-proven “local” Lada Kalina/Granta platform for the Datsun Mi-Do / On-Do .

Where is the Datsun On Do assembled in Russia?

Once upon a time, when the grass was greener and cars were more reliable, there was such a company as Datsun. More precisely, not really a company, but one of the “side” branches of the famous Toyota. This company was engaged in the production of cheap and quality cars. They were widely popular almost all over the world, they were known even in our country. Recently the company found a “second wind”: the “On Do” model was revived especially for Russia. Would you like to know where the Datsun On Do is assembled?

Datsun On Do: where is it assembled in Russia?

Yes, yes, you heard right. This foreign car (and I can’t even call it one) is born on the stocks of... AvtoVAZ! And the history of the Russian Datsun began, no matter how crazy it may sound... With the legendary “Kalina”! The thing is that to assemble this model, the plant’s conveyor was almost completely redone. More precisely, reassembled. It was necessary to achieve such quality that the car could at least to some extent compete with foreign analogues. It must be said that the workers of Togliatti practically succeeded.

Today, when more than ten years have passed since the assembly of the first Kalina, the “new” conveyor makes it possible to produce Grants and other cars, the quality of which is unusually high for the domestic automotive industry. Wait, but what does this have to do with Datsun, the country of origin of which was originally located somewhat to the east? Let's figure it out now.

Adventures of the Japanese in Russia

As is known, in the recent past, the Japanese, like the French, became the owners of a controlling stake in AvtoVAZ. And, if somehow it didn’t work out with the French specialists, then with the Japanese comrades everything turned out great. It was they who proposed a new idea: assembling the legendary brand at the facilities of a domestic plant! The idea was picked up by domestic specialists, and now Volzhsky’s equipment automobile plant successfully produces components for “Japanese Russian foreign cars”.

History of the Datsun car brand

DATSUN AGE

It all started with the Kaishin Sha Motor Works automobile factory in Tokyo's Azabu Hiru neighborhood.

  • The founder of the factory, 37-year-old Masujiro Hashimoto (1875-1944), graduated from the Tokyo Industrial School in Kuramae, after which the Ministry of Agriculture and Trade of Japan sent him as the best graduate to study engineering in the USA. Hashimoto-san returned to Japan with the firm intention of starting car production.

  • Hashimoto cars are sold under the name DAT. This abbreviation is formed from the initial letters of the main investors of the Kaishin-sha factory, Kinjiro Den, Rokuro Aoyama and Meitaro Takeuchi. This name also reflects the concept of DAT cars of that time: Durable - reliable, Attractive - attractive, Trustworthy - trustworthy.

  • The company Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha (Practical Car Manufacturing Company) is founded in Osaka. It is considered to be another ancestor of the modern Datsun. The company produces three- and four-wheeled auto-rickshaws designed by American aircraft designer William Gorham (1888 – 1949). A passionate Japanophile, Mr. Gorham settled in Japan, took the name Gohamo Katsundo, and did not leave the islands even during World War II. Thanks to the fact that Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha

  • Kwaishin-sha and Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha companies merge. New company receives the name “DAT Jidosha Seizo”.

  • In Osaka, at the plant formerly owned by the Jitsuyo Jidosha Seizo Kaisha company, production of the Datson subcompact car begins. The name literally translates as “son of DAT,” but it would be more accurate to say “child of DAT.” Later, the car's name was changed to Datsun, since "son" is similar to the Japanese word for "loss." Cars of the brand receive a new emblem.

  • On December 26, everything related to the production of automobiles at the Nihon Sanyo zaibatsu becomes the responsibility of a new company, Jidosha Seizo Kabushiki Kaisha. English name – Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Production of the Datsun 12 begins.

  • On April 12, the opening of a new plant in Yokohama took place. This is the first enterprise in Japan where automobile production was carried out conveyor method. The first model to roll off the conveyor belt was the Datsun 14 sedan. The plant produced approximately 500 cars per month.

  • Production of the Datsun 110 begins in January. After several attempts to build a modern car, this is the first real success. At the Second Tokyo Motor Show, which opened in May at Hibuya Park, the Datsun 110 became a real sensation.

  • On January 10, the Datsun S211 pleasure roadster was demonstrated on the roof of the Tokyo department store Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi. Its designer Hiro Ohta adhered to the best British designs sports cars of that time.

  • In August, the Datsun Bluebird 310 was introduced – a new word in the history of the brand. The designer of the model is Teiichi Hara. The car received a monocoque body of modern proportions (length - 3910 mm, wheelbase - 2280 mm) and an independent double-wishbone front suspension. The car's name, "Blue Bird", refers to the play by Maurice Maeterlinck.

  • In September, the production division of Nissan Mexicana S.A. was formed. de C.V. Five years later it will begin producing cars.

  • On February 19, the company announces the results of the competition for the name of the new subcompact model, known under the internal designation Datsun B10. With the advent of new Datsun cars on the Russian market, many buyers have questions. How did you manage to set the cost to less than 400,000 rubles? Who will sell this car and, in general, where is the Datsun on-DO assembled? You will find answers to all these questions in this article. We will also consider the advantages of cars of these brands, the main disadvantages and the experience of drivers who have owned or have these cars. Below is a photo of a Datsun car. These machines are discussed below.

Where is Datsun on-DO assembled? Country of origin

Back in 2012, Nissan announced that they intended to revive Datsun brand. The Japanese automobile giant decided to make budget cars under this brand for the market of underdeveloped countries. Main feature Such cars were adapted for each market separately. For example, for the Indian market, where only the price of the car matters, a Japanese Datsun of one configuration was created, for the Russian market - another. Considering the fact that Russians place higher demands even on cheap models, Datsun had to try hard.

In addition, when developing a car, one has to take into account the prevailing climate in Russia and the quality of the road surface. It is also important that the engines and fuel system accepted domestic gasoline. The Japanese decided that similar machines There are already some on the Russian market - these are the Lada Kalina and Lada Granta. Therefore, they decided not to bother and enter into a contract with AvtoVAZ.

Lada and Datsun cars have the same platform

After this, it became clear where the Datsun on-DO was assembled. These japanese cars assembled in Tolyatti at the same plant and on the same production line as the Lada Kalina and Lada Granta cars. Also, the new Datsuns are made on the same platform that is used in models of the domestic automobile industry. According to the head of AvtoVAZ, Dutsun will be an impetus for the development of the concern.

This also means that all improvements in Dutsun will very quickly appear in Kalinas and Grants. For example, Datsun on-DO vehicles have redesigned exterior mirrors that significantly reduce wind noise at high speeds. This also helps reduce mirror contamination. A similar solution will soon appear on Ladas.

Why Japanese manufacturers We chose platforms. The fact is that they are cheap and simple, all components for them are produced in Russia. Consequently, the cost of spare parts is low. And so it turned out that the new Datsuns also have a low price due to the low cost of the platform.

Differences between Dutsun and Lada

Structurally, Datsun and Granta cars have differences. The main one is the design of the exterior and interior. But as for technical parameters, then the models are identical. Moreover, Lada cars have several engine configurations - with 16 and 8 valves. Also, these cars can be equipped with an automatic or manual transmission. The Datsun car has only an 8-valve engine with a capacity of 87 horsepower and is also equipped with a manual or automatic transmission. There were also statements that a budget version of the Datsun would appear with an engine with a connecting rod and piston group, but there would be few such cars. You can see photos of Datsun and Lada Granta cars in this section.

Improvements in Datsun

It was also important for Datsun to create advantages over Lada cars. Therefore, the developers have improved the sound insulation of the cabin. As a result, felt fender liners appeared on the rear arches, causing rear wheels There was much less noise. The cars also received shock absorbers with improved parameters, different springs and brakes. You can appreciate all the advantages of new Japanese cars thanks to the Datsun on-DO test drive.

A unique feature of these Japanese-Russian cars is a huge trunk of 530 liters - this is 10 liters more than in Granta cars. Perhaps, in this class, it is the Datsun on-DO car that has the largest trunk.

Price

Considering where the Datsun on-DO is assembled, what kind of platform it is and the components used, one should not be surprised at the low price. On the official website there is a promotional price for this car - 342,000 rubles with the buyer’s participation in the Datsun recycling program and when purchasing the car on credit.

Without discounts, a standard one with an 87 horsepower engine will cost 442,000 rubles. The most expensive Dream II package of this car with 4-speed automatic transmission will cost 617,000 rubles. You can test drive the Datsun on-DO at the company's branded car dealerships, which are located in many cities in Russia.

Note that even the basic version of this model has a driver’s airbag, heated seats and mirrors. IN top-end configuration there is multimedia with a USB interface, navigation system with Cityguide software, 4 airbags, ESP system, heated windshield.

Problems of Japanese-Russian co-production

Considering that Japanese cars are manufactured in Russian factories, where Ladas are produced with some problems, aren’t Japanese manufacturers afraid that AvtoVAZ will spoil the attitude of buyers towards the Japanese brand? After all, the problem Russian cars It's not about the design at all. The quality of assembly work and weak components are the main disadvantages of domestic cars.

Consequently, when preparing a project for joint work with AvtoVAZ, Datsun paid attention to the modernization of production. In 2013, Nissan specialists inspected the assembly line and made about 40 recommendations for improving the production line. Comments were made in areas ranging from quality control to recommendations for the manufacture of new parts containers. Today, the AvtoVAZ plant employs many foreigners who supervise and provide training.

Car shortcomings and the falling out engines scandal

In recent months, there has been a lot of information on the Internet about engines falling out in Datsun cars. That is, the motor mount breaks, and the engine literally sags under the hood, and sometimes even clings to the ground. This applies not only to On-Do models, but also to other cars in the line. However, this case is not isolated. Many owners of these machines complain about a similar design flaw.

Similar problems also arose with Lada Granta cars, but in the latter case the owner managed to sue the company for about 900 thousand rubles. Therefore, there was a similar precedent. However, Datsun car owners are unsuccessfully trying to win the case. The fact is that an expert examination appointed by the court ruled that the engine falls out as a result of damage to the suspension and destruction of the engine support brackets. This, as Datsun claims, is due to non-compliance with operating rules, namely due to inertial shock loads on the engine brackets. Similar loads arise as a result of driving a car over road irregularities.

Forensic examination

It is worth noting that the examination does not reveal any manufacturing defects that would affect the strength characteristics of the motor brackets. This means that such supports are provided for by the suspension design, and are not an isolated case resulting from a defect or manufacturing defect. At the same time, Datsun does not pay compensation to its customers and does not carry out repairs in accordance with the warranty, since the warranty book states that the service does not cover defects and breakdowns that arose as a result of non-compliance with the rules for using the car.

This suggests that cars of this brand are completely unsuitable for use on Russian roads. And in general, there is a technically incorrect calculation of the loads that are absorbed by the brackets as a result of vehicle operation. And no matter how Datsun tries to attribute such shortcomings to improper operation of the vehicles, the problem exists.

Also on various Internet portals and forums, users complain that in the official Datsun group of the VKontakte social network, group leaders simply block users who complain and ask awkward questions about falling out engines.

Conclusion

And everything started well with these cars. The excellent Japanese concern Nissan, which is trusted in Japan and all over the world, has entered the Russian market to sell reliable cars. Japanese quality. Expectations were very good, and the cars, despite their good characteristics, turned out to be decent, until the famous scandal with the engines happened. Most likely, the Datsun company itself has nothing to do with this, since cars of this brand use the Lada platform, and, as is known, there were similar precedents with the Granta.
