The choice of participants in our test is not random. It does not at all cross the usual boundaries; all these cars have similar equipment and are representatives of the so-called “people's” cars. Even the difference in price between the extreme points is completely insignificant. The most effective way to raise the price to its ceiling for all presented crossovers, manufacturers considered it possible either to include diesel engines in the equipment of cars in combination with automatic transmission, or an increase in the number of different options. The most affordable is basic Nissan Juke for 690 thousand rubles, the opposite flank was occupied by Mitsubishi ASX, which in maximum configuration exceeded the 1 million mark. 300 thousand rubles.

Comparing the design and interior of the tested cars, it is difficult to give any particular preference to any of them. Lined up, they eagerly await their assessment. Severe, like the brow ridges of a Neanderthal, hung over the many-eyed face of Nissan Juke, Ssang Yong Actyon which, even after the latest restyling, radiates calm goodwill, the still predatory Mitsubishi ASX grins with its front end, slyly squinted with slightly slanted headlights, as strong as an Opel Mokka nut.

Nissan Juke

He is the most cheerful one in our company. The unusual design of this car is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. He is unique. Huge saucers of low beam headlights and boomerangs rear lights coupled with the second-row door handles hidden in the pillars immediately attract attention. Nissan Juke seems to be assembled from different cars: The upper half of the body with a sloping roof resembles a coupe, the bottom with huge wheel arches with black trim like an SUV.

The inside of the car is no less interesting. What immediately catches your eye is the tachometer and speedometer located close to each other, covered, like on a motorcycle, with an air visor. It’s no different that a biker fan worked on creating the interior. Resembling, again, a motorcycle gas tank, the center console is painted in body color, the front door armrests are shiny, like wet fins, and the large screen of the control center and information display is built into the middle of the front panel.

Unlike most Asian models, Nissan Juke pleases with completely European settings for the front seats. There is enough space even for a large driver. The only drawback is the lack of lumbar support adjustments. But the rear passengers, especially when traveling long distances, are not to be envied. You can't walk around here, there's not enough legroom. And the trunk (it’s hard to call it a trunk) – with a volume of only 251 liters, the smallest among the cars tested.

Mitsubishi ASX

Unlike the Nissan Juke, the Japanese ASX, Korean Action and German Mokka were built according to classical canons.

For ASX development Japanese automaker Mitsubishi inspired the success of the compact crossover Nissan Qashqai, whose triumphant march continues around the world today. Nissan has proposed a unique recipe for creating compact crossovers: take a large model, discard all that is unnecessary, fill the rest with modern filling...

Following this recipe, Mitsubishi designers and engineers used the platform of the larger Outlander XL, in which, leaving the wheelbase unchanged, they cut off the massive back. Then, slightly shortening the front end, they “pressed” the roof. The result was Mitsubishi crossover ASX, handsome and confident.

Confidence lies, first of all, in intellectual content. The artificial intelligence of this car controls literally everything: it uses electric amplifier steering wheel, depending on the load, changes the duration of the valve timing, converts braking energy into electrical energy (recovery system), does not allow the car to roll back when you need to start on an uphill slope... By the way, out of the four tested cars, another crossover is equipped with a recuperation system - Opel Mokka.

The ASX interior is much less expressive than the outside, although the equipment is very decent: climate control, CD player with connectivity external sources, navigation system, electric windows, etc. I would especially like to note the front panel, which is somewhat similar to a similar BMW part, skillfully decorated with soft plastic overlays. Perfectly readable instruments, good ergonomics.

But there are a number of comments regarding the placement in the driver’s seat. Although the seating position is high, the seats are apparently designed only for people of average height. Tall drivers want to go a little lower, but the range of adjustments does not allow this. The seat profile is not bad, but the support bolsters are spaced widely, as a result the body is not fixed. The chairs themselves are preferable with fabric upholstery and here's why. The skin of the upholstery is so slippery that it seems that it is impregnated with an anti-friction compound - you slip out when cornering. In addition, the steering wheel was not impressive. The rim is too thin. But overall it’s hard to find fault with the salon.

Perfect assembly, good finishing materials, excellent ergonomics. Only because of the weak lighting, the interior seems somewhat gloomy, especially in the dark. The Outlander XL ASX inherited quite spacious interior, which is the largest among the vehicles tested. Both in front and behind, its footage ensures a completely comfortable position.

Ssang Yong Actyon

The times when Korea was at the forefront of auto design are a thing of the past. Current Korean cars are absolutely not inferior to either European or American models. Ssang Yong Actyon This is a clear confirmation of this. This brutal crossover, which is based on a monocoque body, perfectly combines the dynamics of a city sedan and the technical capabilities of an SUV. Cute appearance, spacious salon biggest ground clearance, among the participants in our test, this Korean model stands out favorably.

Thanks to the efforts of the Italian studio Giorgetto Giugiaro, which developed the design of this car, the car looks harmonious in city traffic. The appearance clearly shows Opel Antara, with the steep-hipped sides so beloved of Italian maestro Kenneth Greenlee. At the same time, the Action's design is not without original features, which make it stand out from the crowd. Slightly slanted headlights, unusual edging of the foglights, unique brake lights.

Although, comparing it with other cars, one can note a number of shortcomings that clearly do not benefit cars of this class. First of all, this is an engine without lower protection, as well as a low-hanging fuel tank, which can significantly complicate its operation in severe off-road conditions.

In the cabin, I would like to note the build quality, although it is difficult to call it modern. Leather chairs are practically no different from simple fabric ones, the back is still the same hard, and the lower back is practically devoid of support. Even the presence of electrical adjustments does not save the situation. Despite the presence of adjustments for the angle of inclination at the backs of the rear seats, the comfort is average - you sit on a low sofa like a grasshopper.

But the trunk is wonderful without any reservations. Capacious (451 l) and spacious, it is also good because it does not have a step between its bottom and the bumper.

How will the most answer? new crossover from our line - Opel Mokka, sales of which started in Russia in December 2012?

Opel Mokka

After an unsuccessful attempt to create an SUV based on Opel Astra, the company from Russelsheim decided to stake its claim in the B-crossover class. The Mokka is Opel's first car in this class. Of course, this car did not appear out of nowhere. Its platform is the same Gamma II, a prototype Opel Corsa new generation, which will premiere in 2014.

The same “trolley” was used when working on the creation of a body for Chevrolet Aveo latest generation. Like the Aveo, the new product from Opel has a strong body, which is welded using high-strength steel.

The Opel Mokka, despite its diminutive size, looks solid. Bright appearance and harmonious proportions do not prevent this car from being practical - the bottom of the crossover is surrounded by unpainted plastic. Brand features - large lighting equipment, a rounded silhouette, a front panel that seems to flow around the front riders - are complemented by a number of details that were previously characteristic only of fashion crossovers. With its large 18-inch wheels and steeply sloping sill line, the Mokka looks confident. While the Nissan Juke focuses on aggressiveness, the Mokka demonstrates the superiority of German technology. In other words, thanks to the use of advanced technologies, Mokka claims to be a leader in our test. It has all the conditions for this: the proprietary FlexFix system, designed for transporting bicycles (up to three bicycles can be hung on the “tail” of this crossover), a huge number of different electronic systems making the driver's work easier, including Hill Start (hill start assist system), ABS (anti-lock braking system), TCS (traction control system), ESP (stabilization system), cruise control...

Speaking about the advantages of this car over other participants in our test, it is worth noting that the Opel Mokka is equipped with unique anatomical seats certified by the AGR association (German: Association fur Gesundheit des Ruckens - Association for Back Health). This crossover is the first in its class where the driver's seat has as many as eight adjustments in different directions. The front passenger can also move his seat forward or backward, and in the richer Cosmo package it is also height adjustable.

There are practically no flaws in the stylish and rich interior. Everything is done in German thoroughly and with high quality. Despite its apparent miniature size, the crossover can easily accommodate five adults. The impressive trunk of the Opel Mokka, which when folded rear seats reaches 1342 l - another plus in favor of this model.

Technical characteristics of compact crossovers of the 2013 model year

Acceleration to hundreds for the Nissan Juke is 8 seconds, Mitsubishi ASX – 11.4 seconds, Ssang Yong Action – 10.8, Opel Mokka – 9.9 seconds.

The most economical car tested is the Opel Mokka. According to the passport data, the fuel consumption of the German crossover ranges from 5.1 l/100km to 6.5 l/100km. Average consumption the rest of the cars in our test are in the range of 6.7 - 7.5 l/100km.

The Korean Ssang Yong Action proved to be the off-road leader among the tested vehicles. Thanks to small overhangs, it is able to overcome angles of up to 22°, and the ground clearance of 180 mm and electronic differential lock, even on a car equipped only with front-wheel drive, allows you to feel quite confident off the asphalt.

On the highway, the German Opel Mokka performs better. It turns smoothly, gliding safely with its nose when overspeeding. Regardless of the engine and drive type, this crossover has excellent ride comfort.

Which compact crossover is better?

As follows from our review, despite the existing pros and cons, all presented crossovers meet most modern requirements. They are economical, environmentally friendly, recognizable and equipped with the most advanced technologies. In the dispute between Ssang Yong Action, Mitsubishi ASX and Opel Mokka, the championship belongs to the German crossover, which is more convenient, more comfortable and more technologically advanced. And the Nissan Juke is captivating appearance and the positive mood emanating from him, which completely displaces thoughts about shortcomings.
