I would like to say right away: the guys from Renault are great. While some are busy turning a car into a cross between a mobile iPhone and a dry closet, others, turning their noses up at their own complexes, are constantly shouting the word “premium” and “luxury”, the modest French are quietly doing their job - inexpensive, but very high-quality cars for the bulk of the poor population.

Yes, their price tags have risen recently too. But for now Renault remains the brand where most models has some reasonable numbers in the price lists. Where, for example, will you now find a modern European car with thoroughbred settings and a normal standard size, the price of which will start with the number three - only in Renault.

A striking example is the new Logan line. The car, which has radically transformed in all respects and rubbed the noses of those who contemptuously spat at its peasant appearance and ascetic interior, has finally been replenished with the updated Sandero hatchback. Starting price - 391,000 rubles. But this is a completely empty car. In order for a car to meet at least some minimum equipment requirements by modern standards, you will have to pay at least 440,000 rubles.

Forget about the ax-chopped appearance of its predecessor. New Renault Sandero rounded up and dressed up. Design elements appeared in the exterior, and swiftness appeared in the gaze. The result of this transformation is the lack of perception of the “budget” nature of the car. The main advantages of the body - height and volume - have also been preserved. When entering the car, the car does not require acrobatic sketches, which will be especially appreciated by older people. And the cubic shape still contributes to the efficient use of space.

NewRenault Sandero became 60 mm longer, became lower by 11 mm and narrowed in width by 20 mm. Ground clearance remains the same - a decent 155 mm.

The interior itself, completely repeating the decoration of the new Renault Logan, has changed much more significantly than his appearance. Only the inexpensive and hard finishing plastic and the overall gloomy color palette remind of its former simplicity.

But in other respects it is a decisive step forward. The front panel curves modernly in smooth lines. The new steering wheel, molded to fit the correct grip, fits comfortably in your hands. Finally, the buttons for power windows, mirror adjustments and sound signal. The microclimate unit, which moved a little higher, became convenient to use. And Meganov’s instrument panel with chrome-plated scale edging is not only easy to read, but adds gloss to the interior.

However, not all of the shortcomings have been corrected. The steering wheel is still not adjustable for reach. The rustic seat is still suboptimal in shape and range of adjustments.

A separate topic is equipment. In the new generation, Sandero received, in general, all the achievements of cars more than high class. True, their availability varies depending on the selected configuration. Already in the second Confort version, the car is standardly equipped not only with ABS, front airbags and minimal power accessories, but even with cruise control.


The center console is topped with an optional multimedia complex with a touch screen, navigation system and the ability to pair with a phone. The graphics on it, of course, are simple, but the very fact of its presence and low cost make its purchase worthwhile.

The rear row of seats is still roomy: Sandero is one of the few cars in its class that can truly be called a five-seater. True, there were no additional benefits for passengers here, and there are none. And the sofa itself is more of a soft version of a bench. But unlike sedan Logan, absolutely all Renault Sanderos have separately folding backrests.


In the nominal position, the trunk volume, as before, is a good 320 liters. True, the loading height is high, and when folding the seats, a significant slope is formed. Under the floor there is a full-size spare wheel.

The main source of questions is on the opposite side of the body. The main advantage of a small engine with a volume of not even 1.2, but rather 1149 “cubes”, is its “four-cylinder”. This means that power unit devoid of any vibrations, rattling and adjustment to idle speed, which are usually inherent in three-cylinder units. In addition, the engine has not lost any power compared to its predecessor - still the same 75 horsepower.

True, the technical characteristics dryly state that the dynamics have suffered. Renault Sandero 1.2, which has added 70 kg in weight, accelerates to 100 km/h in 14.5 seconds (+1.5 sec), reaching the limit at 156 km/h (- 6 km/h).

In reality, these modest numbers are perceived a little differently. You can, of course, immediately forget about a dynamic start or a sharp jump into the next row - this engine has no “lower” in principle. But as soon as the tachometer needle reaches at least 2500-3000 rpm, the small hatchback begins to confidently catch up with the entire traffic flow.

Moreover, active operation of the gearshift lever with the tachometer needle regularly approaching the peak torque value at 4250-4500 rpm allows even a little mischief. Sandero 1.2 quite confidently reaches values ​​of 100-110 km/h, although at this speed its real limit ends - the hatchback accelerates beyond that.

At the same time, Renault Sandero remains a quite comfortable car for civilian use. The engine, when spinning, does not put pressure on the ears. The practically canonized suspension still forgives absolutely all potholes, although it provides the car with excessive roll and some sway. And directional stability allows you to drive the car over long distances without unnecessary stress, although the adaptive operation of the hydraulic booster raises complaints - the steering wheel, which is tight at low speeds, “relaxes” as the speed increases. It should be the other way around.

Save on fuel by purchasing Sandero 1.2 will not work. Firstly, to drive confidently in traffic, the engine will have to be kept in good shape all the time, spurring it regularly - even the declared consumption is under 8 liters per “hundred”. Secondly, the engine loves to “eat tasty food”: the recommended type of gasoline is 95-98.

What is the result?

Renault Sandero with a 1.2 engine is not bad in itself. But its existence is negated by the penny difference in price compared to the 1.6 modification with an 82-horsepower engine, which may not be much more powerful, but is much more capable in all traction parameters. There is even a suspicion that the introduction of the Sandero 1.2 modification is special marketing ploy, which is designed to relieve Renault warehouses of the old eight-valve 1.6 engine.

One way or another, if your gaze falls on the new Sandero with a 1.2 engine, keep in mind that its range of application is exclusively urban - here the owner will feel quite confident. But any dacha loading a car under the roof with a wife, mother-in-law and grandmother as passengers will automatically turn the car into a slow-moving vehicle. In addition, on the highway the only image before your eyes will be a truck, which the Sandero 1.2 will be able to overtake with great difficulty.

But the list of breakdowns, miscalculations and age-related diagnoses for Logan and Sandero is almost identical. Perhaps the only difference will be the corrosion resistance of the metal.

If sedans from the first years of production rusted until their bodies began to be galvanized in 2007, then the hatchback is basically free of such problems. The Russian debut of Sandero happened almost simultaneously with the restyled sedan - at the end of 2009. By the way, this is precisely why the hatchback was never updated, passing the baton to the next Sandero at the end of 2014.

Along with Logan, the five-door Sandero has rightfully gained fame as a trouble-free device that does not bother the owner with serious and expensive worries. And although there were noticeably more Logans in driving schools, taxis and delivery services than Sanderos, there is no doubt about the built-in durability of the hatchback. However, whims happen. But the list of minor flaws noticed on Sandero looks worse on paper or on a tablet than in real life. With age, the lighting of partings and buttons in the interior gradually disappears. The left steering column lever, loaded with a horn and turn signals, is rented out. The lamps burn out. The most unpleasant thing on this list is liters of water in the doors. Over time, the “gate” loses its tightness and fills with liquid. If the previous owner did not control the problem, there is a potential threat of electrical breakdowns and rust attack, although the car itself is not susceptible to it.

It wouldn't hurt to check the condition of the radiator. Periodically, stones fall into it through the decorative grille. And in some specimens the part completely collapsed on its own, spontaneously. Such an unpleasant surprise was usually solved by a guarantee. By the way, she is very loyal to Renault. There are precedents when even a standard jack was replaced under warranty.


All Renault Sandero engines came from Logan (as part of Russian market), which, in turn, received them from the long-rotten ancestors of the 80s. All Sandero engines produced in Moscow are gasoline and naturally aspirated, with four cylinders and an in-line layout. Volume – 1.4-1.6. Power: from 75 to 105 forces. Torque ranges from 112-147 Nm. And if the smaller power unit in terms of volume is free of variations (always 75 hp and 112 Nm), then the 1.6 can be different: eight-valve (Renault K7M) or sixteen-valve (Renault K4M). The first produces 84 hp. and 128 Nm, the second – 102 or 105 horses depending on the configuration and 147 Nm of torque. In general, each of the engines does not bother with breakdowns. Sometimes you may only need to replace the crankshaft seal and water pump. There are cases of oil leakage from under the valve cover. Nothing more serious is written into the Sandero engine. Only one hundred sixteen-valve specimens are frightening, in which the unit “exploded” even before the first maintenance. But with such a large circulation this is rather an exception. In addition, the issue of these hundred cars, most likely, has already been decided by the previous owner. True, probably on our own, since neither the factory, nor the dealers, nor the representative office recognized the defect.

Claims about the transmission depend on its type. Most Sanderos come with a manual transmission with five gears, but there are also examples with a four-speed automatic transmission. And if the “mechanics”, at most, are annoying with noise, then the “automatic”... This outdated unit is perhaps the worst “automatic” of our time. The gearbox rarely survives up to 70-80 thousand km without repair. Gear changes are accompanied by jerks, and active driving and cold starts sharply reduce service life.

The chassis is the strongest point of the B0 platform in general and Sandero, as its carrier, in particular. The car handles broken asphalt incredibly easily thanks to its long-travel and energy-intensive suspension. In addition, geometric cross-country ability allows even an ordinary hatchback to easily navigate the terrain, not to mention the elevated version of Stepway. At the same time, attention to the suspension is not required before 80,000 km. Previously, the brakes, which do not like dusty directions, may be bothered.


The salon is aging slowly. Visually, materials begin to wear out closer to 100,000 km, although nuances such as seat creaking may appear much earlier. For some reason the muffler is rusting. Sometimes the heated rear window partially breaks (no more than a couple of threads). At the same time, the glass itself is “armored”. Sandero easily catches cobblestones from the track.

When starting to consider the changes that led to the appearance of a new car - Renault Sandero, I would like to emphasize that when comparing, you need to remember the price. Before that I traveled in this car as a passenger. It should be noted that a girl drove me and I felt quite normal in the role of a passenger. But then workdays began and I began to get acquainted with Sandero. The first feeling when driving around the city is that you are steering, and the gears are being changed for you by a blonde hidden somewhere below. But you need to understand the machine, when you find it, your understanding becomes better. But the declared 103 hp. it cannot always be realized. I compare it with my personal Skoda Octavia Tour 1.9 TD. Diesel is of course just a tank compared to this.

In general, of course, the budget is felt in the car. After Skoda, my wife is wary of getting into the Sandero - she says the doors are very light and in general the car does not feel massive and solid. But the seating position in the car is high and the ground clearance is 165 mm. allows you to ignore potholes and curbs (who would have thought that these qualities would be useful in the city ;))). It is not clear why when the turn signal is turned on, one light on the dashboard, in principle, there is only one (apparently two separate lights for left and right turns greatly increased the cost of the car), with automatic transmission, heated seats, 4 lift windows, music, foglights... But there is only one mirror in the visors (on the passenger side).
